question for dog lovers (NBR)

My H is planning to take all kids and fly to inlaws for a week. I will stay home and work - I am excited about having all this time for myself, although I will be missing my kids crazy.

We have a dog - lovely cocker spaniel. She will stay with me, of course. My question is how long can the dog stay inside during the day without going to the bathroom? I will need to leave at 8:30 am and the earliest I can come back home is 6 pm. Is it too long of a strech for a dog to hold on? On a regular day she stays home but there is always somebody home with her who lets her to the back yard, so I dont keep track of her bathroom habits. I walk with her in the morning and at night. She never had an accident at night and usually sleeps through whole night (12 hours). Should I hire somebody to come over and walk her during lunch?

  • I don't have a dog personally but I would think she should technically be able to hold it. However if she isn't used to being alone all day she may be pissed and just use the bathroom to act out. I would probably look into a dog walker for the week provided it's not too expensive.

  • Thanks for the answers. So it is doable. @britbratjf, yes I am afraid she will be pissed, but having the stranger to come in and walk her may only upset her even more. She used to stay by herself for half a day, but never full day.

  • Our dogs are inside from 6:15am-at least 4:30pm. I feel terrible about it but they've never had accidents.

  • Our dog can go about 10 hours. Although it might not be a bad idea for someone to walk her since she's not used to going that long.

I agree with mightybee, if your dog is used to going more often she may not be able to hold it, I would personally hire someone.

This. Our dogs are let out every few hours when we're home so I don't think they'd be able to go 10-12 hours straight. When we aren't home our sitter is usually here and she lets them out. There have been occasional long days where they might be home alone but we try not to make it longer than 8 hours.
  • My Boston can go that long, but if yours is not used to it, you might want to start cutting out or extending time between potty breaks now, before everyone leaves, so she will get used to having to hold it.

We are in a condo and have our dogs on a three walk a day schedule, before and after work and before bed.  Roughly 7:30am, 5:00pm, and 11:00pm.  They do fine on that schedule, but they are used to it.  If we ever have to change our hours temporarily, I usually get someone to let them out.
