intro (grad. from preg. after 35)

Hello! I keep reading in PG after 35 and PGAL just to see how people are doing but since my little beduk (froggy) has been my sweet snuggly (and of course exhausting) outside baby for just over 3 weeks now it's really past time for me to start hanging out here if I may.

So, may I join you all? I'm 39 and she is our first child.

I'm a teacher so am fortunate that with the timing of her birth I'll have a little over 3 months home with her before I go back to work. It's going to be quite an adjustment though as I haven't been home for a summer since I was a kid! Not just working - the past 18 summers I taught at a residential "nerd camp" so was really away most of the summer! It will be nice to be here in Maine for a change but I'm definitely going to have to figure out the BFing in public thing soon and start getting out of the house with DD so I don't go nuts! I am not much of a home-maker at all! Also have to travel in a bit less than 2 weeks so will have to BIP then anyway. Tips?

Please pardon the outdated siggy/ticker if you can see it - have only been able to mobile-bump (while DD nurses/dozes/nurses) since she was born and haven't hunted down how to change siggy from the mobile version of the website. Finally got on a real computer and fixed siggy.

Welcome! I have the same problem with my siggy, haven't found a way to change it from mobile.

As far as bfing in public goes, I say just own it and forget about what anyone may or may not think. Find a comfy spot and feed your baby. I hate that anyone gets nervous about this, it should be a non issue. Just focus on your baby and do your thing.

Regarding traveling, I have now had two experiences traveling alone with my baby. I wasn't lucky enough to be able to nurse so I had to pump. Pumping in the car at a gas station is NO FUN. Count your lucky stars you are able to nurse!!

Whooo hoooo another teacher

Well I now am a Learning Consultant, I test kids for learning disabilities but I taught for 13 years. I am still part of a school district on the Child Study team. I can't wait for my summer break. We are in the final countdown!!!!

I have a 6 month old that is pretty much still exclusively breast fed. I am lucky in that I work in the same town in which I live so I come home for lunch and to feed my little man every day. That being said, I am not a whip your boob out kinda lady. I envy those people that are, I am not. What I can suggest from my modest opinion is to find a place where there is less foot traffic and invest in a good nursing cover. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE nursing shirts. My local Babies R us carries a brand that are really cute and not expensive at all. You can nurse more easily without having to expose more of yourself than you wanted to. There is a shelf like insert that looks like a camisole that you just move away, open up your nursing bra and have at it. No need to lift up your shirt and wrangle your breast free LOL. If you can't find or don't want to buy a nursing shirt I would opt for shirts that can easily be pulled down or pulled up that still provide some coverage. I sometimes wear my bella band from when I was pregnant under a shirt so if I have to lift it up my shirt to nurse mid section is still covered. Hope that helps and congrats on the new little one

I also have one child. He is 16 months. Breastfeeding was a wonderful bond for us. I used a Bebe Au Lait cover in public, that that worked out well until he was old enough to push it off his head on the airplane. ;-)

Hi and congrats on the birth of you DD!

I can't speak on the BF in public, I never did it since my DD was born in November, we didn't take her out very often since this was the winter that would never end! I don't BF anymore, so I don't have anything to offer, except that I think the more you do it, the more comfortable you get with it.

As for travelling with LO. We did take DD on a 5 hr road trip when she was 2 months old. Well, I guess it's normally a 5 hr road trip when it was just me and DH. We left as soon as she had her morning feeding and she slept until her next feeding. We just pulled off the highway at a rest stop or gas station and I sat in the back of the car and fed her. Changed her diaper in the back seat when needed. She got a little fussy the last hour of the drive. If I was in a car seat, I would be angry too after that long! All in all, it went much better than I originally expected and I don't worry about our next road trip we will be taking in 3 weeks.

Thank you all! I will have to look for those nursing shirts. Though theres no BRU here - maybe next week when we're in a more populous place Otherwise s far a nursing tank with a loose shirt over it is seeming good - I just need to get a few more and better fitting nursing bras and tanks. I like that the tank covers belly but soon it will be too hot to wear two layers like that.

@shelley1002‌ - I live up(down?) near Acadia NP. Though really I'm from "away".

The weather we so nice this weekend we took LO for a little outing in the nearby national park so I got a little start BFing in public - though very un-crowded public - nothing like an airport will be! But anyway it was ok.
@Guennie‌ you are right - I am very grateful I can just nurse her - pumping in a car at a gas station does not sound like fun at all and airplane /airport would be worse!

@Geeps2 happy end of the school year! Are you buried in evals to get done? Our sp.ed. people tend to be since referrals get put off and put off then finally go through in the spring so then there's an overload of evals and iep meetings for them to get done. I need to get a job out of the regular classroom I think to make my job more managable but not in sp .ed. because of the killer paperwork and beauracracy. Dream is to convince superintent that we need an elementary science coach/coordinator but there's abut a 0.2% chance of that happening. Oh well!

Sorry if I didn't tag you - I still appreciate the welcomes. Just running out of patience with one finger typing. Plus DD just fell asleep so now I can too!

I am like a one legged man in an ass kicking contest these days. I work with preschoolers so we are always getting in new referrals once a child is about to turn 3 or if a parent has concerns about speech or other issues so I always have something to do. This week has been INSANE!!!! We are up to 11 IDs in a 2 week period and just found out another one came in this afternoon. I could cry I'm so busy. I have IEPs coming out my ears with our graduates. I love what I do but some days it is hectic, like today. Good luck trying to sell your dream position. If only they would listen
