Re: Article:College is worth it

  • I started college at just turned 17, but it was a community college. I also worked ft and did that for 2 years before moving to an on campus apt at a university. I found the immaturity of my campus assigned roommates beyond annoying and thought they were quite entitled with no jobs and parents who paid tuition, spending money, groceries and cars for them.
Did I learn from it? Yeah. But I do think my experience was different than the typical experience starting the way I did. I was determined to get my degree and get out because I understood it was expensive so while I am sorry I didn't get the "whole" experience, I am glad I didn't have $100k in debt like a few of my friends. Honestly kc, if I got the impression my kid was doing what you describe doing ( and in know many other students do) I would have a serious sit down with them about priorities and goals and probably withdrawal my support (money) and encourage them to take done time to figure things out.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

I expect my kid(s) to go to college.  But I expect them to do it in an intelligent manner that doesn't land them with six figures of debt for a degree that locks them into a job that pays peanuts.

  • Maybe my FFC should be I expect my kids to use college to grow up. I am perfectly fine paying for that as long as they keep their grades up I am good.
  • Though, I would be in favor of a model where everyone took a year off after HS and traveled or worked or whatever and then began college at 19 or if it was more common to have a gap year at another time. But the gap year hasn't really taken off in the US.
I took a year off between HS and college and it was the best decision I ever made. I was not ready to go off to college on my own at 18. I worked as a dental assistant, saved money, realized how difficult life would be without a strong education behind me, chose to go to college on my own and went at 19. Everyone swore I wouldn't go back to school if I took time off, but not only did I go back, but since it was self-motivated I had incredible grades whereas in HS I got just enough to not be grounded (i.e. nothing under a B when I was capable of much higher).
