GTKY: What do you do for a living?

I have a degree in teacher education and a degree in communication studies. I wanted to teach secondary English then I realized teaching wasn't for me. I started work-study at my college during my freshman year when I was 17 and fell in love with higher ed. I'm currently assistant to the Vice President at that very same college. I also help to manage the college's honors program and the college's orientation class. I enjoy my work. I really love higher education and the students I get to meet really make my job special. It's crazy that I'm so pro-education because I hated middle and high school and didn't really do well in school until I got to college. I think college was my turning point. I eventually want to become either a full fledged program coordinator or director, either way I'm staying in higher ed.

I will never forget when my daughter was about 4 or 5 and she said "Mommy... How come you don't have a real job?" I told her I did and that I was, at the time, Evening and Weekend Administrator for the college. I reminded her she'd been to my job several times. She said "No mommy, that's not a real job... You're not a police officer, doctor or a firefighter!" She was so serious too! I almost felt bad for not being a doctor! This thread shows how diverse career choices can be! In school they only tell you about the "traditional" occupations.

@bribbon - what was your area of research? I was synthesizing and testing nucleoside analogues as viral reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Sadly, it was a massive failure. Oh well.

SAHM.... Degree in criminal justice, working with domestic violence victims /survivors and people w AODA issues. .... Was a GM for Starbucks for 3 years (while pg w my 2nd) and it was a blast.

I am a pediatric occupational therapist. Prior to that, I was a management liability insurance underwriter. My bachelors degree is in English.

Print. My experience is largely in young adult and historic nonfiction. (And yes, it is a long story how those became my areas.)

I'd love to get into novels at some point, but the experience I've had has been pretty awesome.

I am addicted to YA! My husband is a writer and has written 2 so far. I'm his in house editor.

Alot of teachers! I am an ophthalmic technician, which means I assist the eye doctors in exams, and procedures. I absolutely love my job!

I work in pathology for 4 hospitals in Columbia. We focus on genetic testing.

Can I ask how you got into this field? Do you need to be certified? I've always wanted to do something like this and I'm starting to look up options for when the kids get bigger and I can go to school. I'm a sahm currently.

I have a degree or three in engineering but currently stay at home with my girls. I will probably go back in a few years. But I'm still not exactly sure what I want to do when I grow up.

I'm a project director for a biopharmaceutical research organization specializing in early phase clinical trials. I actually started out working in the lab for this company analyzing clinical samples (animal/human plasma, serum, urine, whole blood) and have since moved my way up to project management. It can be extremely stressful but I enjoy it nonetheless
