String test

I am not a superstitious person whatsoever, but years ago (before I was married or even thinking about having kids), my cousin did the test on me, and it came back girl, boy, girl. I had a girl, and now the joke among my friends is that the next boy and girl will be twins, since there are studies saying that the older you are, the chances are higher to have multiples. Whatever the case may be, every person that I have done this test on over the years has ended up being 100% accurate. My aunt, who has 6 children, did it, and it came out in the exact order of all of them. And my other cousin, that has no kids, the string didn't move at all. Like I said, I'm pretty skeptic about psychics and all that kind of stuff, but when I see this coming true before my very eyes, it's hard to doubt it. So...aside from the twins, I'll keep you guys updated on whether this one is a boy and the string is correct! :)

Re: String test

  • What in the world is a 'String' test? Do explain as I'm pregnancy dumb today.  (First pregnancy was 13 years ago.)

  • There are different variations on what you use, one way is to tie your wedding band to a string and hold it over your belly. But I just use a needle & thread (or you can tie it to a pencil). You hold the needle steady over your wrist, and the string will move side to side if it's a boy, and in a circle if it's a girl. It will go in the order of all your children, so if you already have a girl, for example, it will start with a circle, and proceed on with the genders of all your other children till it stops completely. If any of you try it, let me know what the outcome is!

  • My friend is pretty superstitious so as soon as I told her about our BFP, I had to ask, "Ok is it going to be a boy or a girl??" She likes to look at the Chinese predictions online. Girl it said. Just for funsies 8->

I don't really consider this the same as the OWT's, such as.."if you are carrying low, you'll have a boy", or "if you have morning sickness, it's a girl" or whatever....because with my pregnancy with DD, everyone INSISTED I was was having a boy based on OWT's. But I did the string test, and it said girl, and sure enough, it was! But the fact that it will go in the exact order of your kids, even before you are pregnant is what amazes me! It's all in fun, like you said, but because of the accuracy I've witnessed, I tend to believe it. We'll see if the streak continues....

^^That losses comment makes me sad.  :(

But then I also thought, so what if you have 2 in a row, like 2 girls or 2 boys.  How can you tell when one pregnancy ends and one begins?

Sorry :( I just thought of it because I was pregnant with twins and lost them at 10.5w and I've read that sex organs start developing at 10 weeks.

And yea, your point also brings up a good question.

We did this as a joke one girls' weekend.  And it was dead on with the 7 girls we did it on.  As far as the losses question - one girl had a loss and knew the sex and it counted for it.  The other girl didn't know the sex but there was an extra child in there.

According to my turn, I am to have three girls.  The karyotype from my m/c showed a girl.  So I should be having a girl this time according to the string test.

ETA:  I am not promoting the test in any way - I am simply reporting on the experiment that I am personally familiar with.

  • As for the losses, in my case, it has never accounted for them. But my aunt that I mentioned, actually had 7 kids, but the first one died as a baby, and it did count that one. My BFF has had 2 m/c's and has 2 children...and it shows 2 kids for her.

  • @Lanatir....if there are 2 girls in a row, for example, it pauses, then starts a new circle. It's really freaky, but I have fun with it! I'm known as the "string test girl" here at work....whenever someone is preggo, they come to me to see the gender! LOL
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • FFS, does no one learn? The string test is about as useful as one of those "pee on this at home and it'll tell you boy or girl" tests. WORTHLESS. Wait until your A/S and stop buying in to old wives tales...

Doesn't it take less energy to ignore the thread than to respond with how useless it is? Clearly some of us think the OWT are fun and like to discuss them and some of us think they are stupid. If you fall into the latter category why not just ignore threads related to them?

#1) Quoting or tagging is very useful so that people know who and/or what you are referring to.

#2) I'm glad that some of you are so caught up in OWT that you'd like to waste your time clucking about it all day, but personally I find it annoying. What I find more annoying is the 10+ threads that are already in existence on this board about OWT, yet everyone finds the need to post new ones. If you want to have one thread dedicated to OWT, then have at it, but when I have to see it day in and day out I feel obligated to say something about it.

#3) If I keep ignoring stupid threads then this will become Babycenter or some other annoying board like that. I didn't join those boards for a reason.

Would you like more information on my views on this topic? Please see my post in the FFFC today. :)

@Beckyboo71, maybe you haven't checked out the wonderful tool that I put together for those new to the board. Check out the post "New? Click here first!" and take a mosey on over to our January 2015 blog. There is a tab just for abbreviations that will help you better understand the lingo on The Bump.

ETA: Link to make it even easier for you to find the thread mentioned above.

  • @Beckyboo71, please see items #2 and #3 on my list for the answer to your last question. I'm not sure if you frequented any other boards on TB prior to joining this BMB, but this is how I was introduced to TB.

Science and facts are coveted much more than "fun OWT" on TB in general. If all we cared about were the fun OWT everyone would be totes preggers and all those BFNs would mean nothing.

That thread was started almost 3 weeks ago. I dunno, I guess I just don't get why its a big deal *shrug* to each their own I spose.

As for the the abbreviations page there is a fair few that are not on there. All of the big ones of course are, but I remember several times I went to check for one and it wasn't there. Of course I can't think of any at the moment.
  • I will say too that the repeats that we get almost everyday (ex: posts about bleeding) are getting old. Sure tell us you are worried and gonna call the doc and then update us if you must. But its a question that I think has been asked almost everyday since I've been posting here.

Okay. I just did this test with dental floss and my wedding ring (I'm at the cottage and can't find a needle and thread).

I started with the ring resting on my wrist and raised it gently so that it didn't swing or anything. Just lifted up. Within 5 seconds it began to swing Ina circle, picking up speed and size of circle. That would be my Zig. Then it slowed down and got almost still and then it swooped right back up into vigorous circles!! This is the first of the home "tests" I've done that showed a girl result for T-Rex.

I'm keeping a journal of as many as we can find. I love this sorta stuff. Amazing. Thanks for sharing how it's done!!

    You're welcome :)
