  • I know the power sliding doors will be amazing!  There really are so many things about them that will make my life so much easier.  I just...feel like 20 year old me hates over-35 me a little bit whenever I let myself start to accept that I will probably have one.  HA!

nonoemily:  A drug dealer's car!  I am dying!  Keep your ride, honey!  I would love to keep mine too, but with three kids after my twins are born, my current car just will not do.  Sad face.

My (maybe) UO: Can the people who participate in HDBD participate the rest of the week too?
I was worried my pic would be seen as tacky. I hope it's not. I'm trying very hard to normalize myself in real life and hope it's seen as me being me here.

My UO; People constantly telling me or others how they would do something. Like if I want to have Another baby and because it would be my 5 th child people saying how they would never have five kids. And make me feel like ass. It's all the time. I hear dumbass shit like this. People in my world telling me how ridiculous my choices are. I'm almost 40!!! Leave me alone. Also: kids with no shoes on in public places. Like kids over 3. Or who parents who don't enforce hand washing after using the bathroom. Or before meals.

Never! I love your photos :)

ETA: I am really glad you are still participating in the board. I would have been really sad if you would have left!!

  • People probably feel our birthday parties are over the top, but we both come from big families.  We both have 5 siblings and as of today (new niece) we have 25 nieces and nephews (including greats) between the two of us.  Between that and our 3 sets of parents, a few aunts and uncles, and we have to rent a place or have two parties, one at my sister's house and one at his mother's house.

I never understand why people get bitter over this.  My sister was a Christmas Eve baby and my father-in-law has a birthday on 12/26.  We always tried to do a get together for their birthdays, but if not, they were okay with it.  They ALWAYS get a birthday present and a Christmas present, no one in our families has ever tried to short them.  People that get shorted, your family sucks.

Someone I knew growing up had a sister with a Christmas birthday. They figured up one time and realized Christmas birthday sister got MORE for her birthday from aunts/uncles, grandparents, etc., because everyone was afraid she would get shorted.

  • I hate showers. They are so awkward and dumb. I had a bridal shower which sucked so I declined a baby shower. I wanted just a nice dinner or something out with a couple friends sil's. but they couldn't get their shit together and put aside their differences.

I would MUCH rather go visit the baby and bring a gift then.

  • I never got the big birthday party for the babies......but I might change my mind once I actually have a child.   My SIL had a big party for her kids first birthday.   Rented a firehall and everything......the birthday girl slept the whole time.

As for the baby shower books and diaper raffle,  I plan on doing BOTH!      Mu ha ha ha ha !!   I plan on making a couple sweet ass prize baskets for the diaper raffle though.   No cheap crappy prizes.    They will be worthy of their entry fee!    :)

  • I'm with everyone else on having parties. I will readily admit I went overboard on DD first bday party. It was a Parisian Sophie the giraffe theme. There were probably around 40 people there. However, that being said the only non-family invites were three of my best friends. I am the youngest of 9 kids so all of our family parties are quite large if everyone shows up.
Her second bday will be much more laid back but just as many people will be invited.

  • Also, to stir things up...

I don't understand why single women give their children the father's last name in cases where they aren't going to get married/ stay together, and especially if they know he's not going to stick around.

I know so many people who had children and gave them his last name and now he isn't around anymore and they regret it.

I have to disagree because my children have their father"s last name and we were never married but together for 15 years . Nothing is guaranteed to last forever even with a ring or marriage certificate. Although he's still very involved we are not together any longer. They are his children so they should bear his last name. Same thing with this baby, I'm recently engaged but not married and we have been together for almost 6 years. She will also bear his last name. Only thing in this life that's guaranteed is death and taxes.
  • Guess I'm just an independent thinker, but I want my children to bear MY last name. To each their own, I know I'm in the minority but it's just how I think. I pushed them out of me, made them, sacrificed for them, and I want the same name as them.
I didn't change my name when I got married, so our LO will be First Middle MyLast HisLast. No hyphen, because my last name is 8 letters, his is 10, and that would just be cruel.

I think birthday parties for babies are pointless. Last year for DD's birthday we gave her a smash cake and a few presents for her to open at home and that was all. This year we are planning on taking DD to the aquarium in Nola instead of throwing her a party.
I agree. I think the themed, overly planned parties for infants and toddlers are more self gratuitous (for the parents) than about the kid. Give them cake and a playground (indoor or outdoor) where my kids and friend's kiddos can burn off energy and we're happy. Easy to plan, easy to clean up. And no one wrecking my house. Win.
Agreed. BIL and SIL are throwing a huge birthday party for their twins again this year. They will be turning two and the majority of the people there are adults- like 85% of the people. This party is clearly NOT for the girls, but for the parents. And of course the 40-50 people going are expected to bring gifts. It just seems a bit gift grabby to me more than anything. I'm not sure what the magic age is where kids can appreciate a birthday (maybe someone can enlighten me?), but I don't think 1 or 2 year olds need a huge party. My LO will have a small family party at first and once they start school they'll have a their own planned party- still not likely to be 40-50 people!

Just this past weekend we went to a 1st birthday party for my best friends little boy -- 140 people, circus theme with a balloon maker, face painter, caricaturist, carousel jump house, catered, a 3 tier cake bigger than my wedding cake and every circus treat imaginable -- the mom spent about $4,000 & it was beautiful! I lived vicariously thru her cuz it's not something I'd ever do even if I had nothing better to do with that kinda money. NMS but to each their own!

  • I don't understand why people have baby showers before the baby arrives. If I have a shower I want people to get to meet the actual baby.

I also don't understand people who let their dogs off leash in parks that are not off-leash parks. One of my dogs doesn't like other dogs. (He loves my other 2 dogs, but strange dogs he doesn't like.) We don't go to off-leash parks with him. But I should be able to walk him in another park without having to worry about other peoples dogs coming up to us on our walk.

My baby shower was co ed and we played jenga and beer pong (I didn't) as two of the games. It was awesome. I don't post on HDBD because I don't post here enough yet plus I'm a fatty and hate how I look right now.
@mgg242 that sounds awesome! I am asking for a co-ed shower. It is as much my baby as it is Ryan's, so I want him there, and I want my brother and dad and BFF's boyfriend, etc. I think we're still going to have some baby-themed games, but I want them to be entertaining for the men, too, and games/activities won't be forced on anyone. I also want to help plan my shower and help pay for it, but I don't know if my BFF and whomever else hosts (probably my aunt) will let me.

  • I stopped posting HDBD pics because I feel like I don't post enough anymore to justify it. And honestly, I haven't even opened a HDBD thread in a while.

My birthday is December 28, so it's during the winter AND during Christmas break from school, AND I share my birthday with my brother (we're not twins). Despite all that, my parents did (and still do) an excellent job of separating our birthday from the rest of the holiday season. It only sucked as a kid when it came to trying to plan a birthday party. More often than not we'd end up doing it sometime in the middle of January.

My UO: I don't think that students should be given a free ride to college based on a sports scholarship. Academic scholarship? Yes. But not sports.

Kids who are chosen for sport scholarships also have to maintain their grades as well. It's not like they are failing and solely are chosen based on their sportsmanship.

  • Mine is lame.

I hate cereal. I think it is the most disgusting, vile thing. The smell of it makes me want to barf. And when Ryan tries to kiss me after he eats cereal, I just want to tell him to back the fuck up. (I don't; I just hold my breath.)

I will eat super crunchy granola with yogurt, but that is it. Or Chex mix, but that is different.
I don't mind cereal, but will only eat it dry.  I just have a big glass of milk with it.

Ok, I don't know where you went to college, but most schools that I'm familiar with don't have grade requirements for athletic scholarships, other than maintaining eligibility. None of the schools that offered me scholarships had any grade requirements beyond that...

Considering the schools, especially division 1 schools, are making millions and millions of dollars off the kids playing sports, I think it is a fair exchange. If the scholarship system didn't exist, there would be such a mass exodus of athletic talent from collegiate sports, which would probably lead to a decrease in all types of scholarships.

Yeah, it's pretty much a necessity for colleges to offer these scholarships in order to keep their athletic programs strong since SO MUCH revenue comes from those.  Our student athletes are SUPPOSED to get certain grades and they have study halls and stuff they're supposed to go to, but for some of the sports it doesn't seem to do much good.  For other sports, like women's soccer comes to mind, I've had great experiences with the students.

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with a big 1st birthday party! We had like 75 people at Madi's. I made lots of yummy food and it was fun. I kept a tiny human alive for a whole year, that deserves to be celebrated!

I'm already super excited for her 2nd birthday party this year, but am trying hard not to really plan it yet because I will be 6 months pregnant and want it to be more low key. I know she will have so much fun running around the backyard with her cousins though, I can't wait.

I also have no problem with the elf on the shelf . I think she'll think it's fun so I want to do it. Not as a disipline technique ("be good or the elf will tell on you" seems like a bit of a cop out) but because it seems like a fun Christmas tradition.

  • My UO is that I dislike mini-vans.  However, I will probably end up with one so I will have to learn to love one, I guess.

^^This.  I should've never said "never!!"  We bought a Honda Odyssey last weekend.  I'll have three under two in November so it had to be done.  I feel like I should be more excited to have a new vehicle but I just can't.  It's got some great features (umm, a cool box for your drinks?!) and the sliding doors are nice.  I guess I just need to get used to the fact that I'm now a mini-van mom. :)

Don't flame me but I hate grammer nazis. I will be the first to admit that I'm horrible at spelling but I'm way better then I used to be. In school I was always the math person, I never understood all the rules to grammer or spelling. Spell check is my friend but even then sometimes there is just no help and no matter how many times I reread everything I type I always fine something wrong.

I will admit I am a comma whore!! I pass that thing all around sentences! Ha...

Oh and I think I may have a slight addiction to exclamation points!! :)

Your friends are in school so its easy to invite everyone and few people will have other plans. There are so many options! I also hate summer because it is just too darn hot! Anything over 75 makes me retreat to the AC.
