Induction-duction, what's your function?

Re: Induction-duction, what's your function?

  • I have mild hypertension. If I don't go natural I will be induced at 39 weeks.  If the test I had yesterday comes back positive for pre-e I will be induced next Monday (37 weeks).

With DD#1, I was in labor but didn't realize until my weekly NST.  At that point, my OB sent me on to L&D and they started pitocin.  I was 38w3d.  I also was taken off blood thinners due to an allergy.  This time, I have the option of being induced at 39w, if I make it that far.  I probably will take them up on it since last time the pitocin wasn't that bad for me and still went without an epidural.

Those who were induced at 37 weeks, did the induction take a long time? Did you have a c section?

I had to be induced because my water broke and contractions didn't start.  It really wasn't that difficult, I was just bummed I didn't get my natural birth I'd been hoping for.

  • I went in for our appointment today and my Doctor offered to sweep my membranes. She said 30% of women go into labor within 48 hours of it being done and 50% by 5 days.

I ended up having a lot of brown blood after she did it (it covered the table). She seemed a little shocked by the amount but said it was most likely just built up around the Cervix. It's subsided since then so now we wait. Hopefully we are in the 30% that go into labor right away!

  • So I'm a little freaked out the doctors office just called and they moved my induction from Monday morning to Sunday evening
I get that its only like 15 hours difference but I'm really nervous/anxious.
  • I'm being induced next Wednesday for gestational diabetes. I *think* I would have been able to go to my due date, but I started insulin a few weeks back and am now with a high risk doc. Ah, well. I'm more nervous about actual labor than the induction process, truth be told!

Did they give you any reason? I know a lot of ladies on this board ended up going in in the evening for a cervix softner to be left in overnight and Pitocin started in the AM.  Maybe they are planning something similar? I would call and ask what the plan is, but try not to worry in the meantime.

  • @Lilygrace48‌ Thank you for adding that! I've been really nervous about induction and hearing someone who went through it give that feedback really helps calm my nerves. I really appreciate it!

  • As far as I know, I'll only be induced if I get to 41 weeks. Though I've been having weekly NSTs, I actually haven't been told why, but I looked on the paper, and it said due to obesity and also, since last Monday, I've been on BP meds for high BP, though apparently they seem to be working, so unless something changes/comes up, I'll only need to be induced if he doesn't come out on his own. Gah, did not mean to have that be such a run-on sentence....

  • I want her to stay in as long as possible as long as she is safe in there and so does the doctor. I would trust your doctors judgement if I were you and not try to push it any sooner than it has to be even though it's scary :( I told my doctor that I don't care what they have to do to me or what I have to go through, just get her here safely!
  • I was induced with my first 10 days prior to my due date due to high BP

  • I was induced at 41 weeks with my first and 40. 5 with my second because my fluids were low.

I have an appointment tomorrow so I plan on asking all the details, at my last appointment I was already dialated to 2cm very soft and squishy and she said I was thinning out. I don't no anythimg about the cervical medication but isint that what its job is?

  • I go tomorrow for a NST to check on baby since he was diagnosed having IUGR. If it doesn't look good then my Dr will induce right away (37.1) if everything looks good, I will wait a week for a follow up u/s. If that looks good, she'll induce me at 39 weeks regardless (due to my medical history & history of fast delivery)

I'm very nervous to see how he does tomorrow.

Definitely something to ask the good doctor. The only other thing I can think of based on stories I've heard is some people get a foley bulb inserted as well, not sure how many centimeters that puppy is supposed to stretch out to though.

Guess we'll find out tomorrow thanks for the support, when I was induced with DS all i had was the pitocin so all of this is new for me.

I was induced with my first at 41 weeks for being past my due date.  There are studies showing that inducing at 41 weeks leads to better outcomes and fewer cesareans than waiting until 42 weeks. (I did end up with a c/s, though, because my baby was OP).

  • If I am not induced for pre-e sooner than I'll be induced at 39 weeks to avoid a section. My baby is huge...
  • I was induced with #1..well, sort of. I was admitted to be induced at 41 weeks. I measured behind in fundal height and had an u/s to check on my amniotic fluid. The fluid level was low (below 5) and my dr didn't feel comfortable letting me go another week. That being said..the plan was to insert a foley ballon since I wasn't dilated. THey couldn't do it because of the position of the baby and my cervix. We were waiting for a room on the l&d floor. My dr stripped my membranes and while waiting for a room to start pitocin I went into active labor and DD was born 3 hrs later. so it was the induction that sort of wasn't
  • I was induced with DD at 39 weeks because DH was starting a new job and we needed to move. Pitocin was started at 8 PM and she was born 7 1/2 hours later.

The contractions were much worse after my water was broken.

I have to admit I am terrified of being induced. My sister was induced with both of hers and they were long painful births. I went on my own last time and it was fairly easy and short, but this time my doctor won't let me go past 41 weeks because the risk to the baby and I'm terrified by the thought of having to be induced.
  • When thinking about induction, which matters more- being dilated or being effaced? I know both have to happen for baby to come, but if you are mostly effaced but not dilated much will they induce? Or vice versa?
