playard or crib? both necessary?

are both a playard and a crib necessary for a newborn? can they sleep in a playard or no? of course, if both is necessary, i would get both but if i could save money for other things like the baby's medical care or other important things, i would rather do that.

  • Where do you plan on LO sleeping? My LO slept in our room for first 6 months so she slept in PNP in the bassinet portion. At 6 months she went to sleep in her own room in her crib. So for us both were absolutely a must.

probably in our room, to keep a close eye on the baby. thank you for the input, i'll definitely consider purchasing both. babies cost so much, but they're worth every penny haha

  • For the first 3 months, you could do a rock n play or bassinet. Have to think about what you're comfortable with. Is different when it is your child vs. some one elses.

We stopped having the pack n play up after about 10months because LO was pulling herself up to standing/ attempting to climb out. There are a ton of options out there & you might have friends who're willing to pass along (or sell at discount) gently used items. There are also less expensive versions of a pack n play, doesn'thave the changing table but is equally good for $60 price point. If you can, read reviews on the specific models you're considering because some are harder to fold than others.

LO is almost 1 1/2 and we've barely used her crib (ended up cosleeping - works for us for the most part, however is not for everyone). So if we had stuck with the original plan of just a pack n play, probably could have worked. Would skip mini cribs though.

We never used our pack-n-play with either child! A crib, on the other hand, feels like a necessity (unless you're planning to co-sleep). Just get a cheap one from Ikea and the wait on the pack-n-play to see if you really wish you had one.
  • We got both.  Baby sleeps in our room and won't transition to his own room in a crib for another month or so.  We also wanted a portible crib for travel purposes.  So both were a must for us.
