Unpasteurized soft cheese?

Has anyone ever even seen this in the US? I LOVE cheese and every time I go to the fancy cheese section of the grocery store for Brie, goat cheese or Gorgonzola, I always check the label. They all say made from pasteurized milk. Even the stuff from France.

I just think it's ridiculous that every single pregnancy resource scares you away from soft cheeses when apparently most of them are ok to consume.

Maybe it's different in Europe or other countries??

Re: Unpasteurized soft cheese?

  • I don't think they can even import it into the U.S. without it being pasteurized anymore.

  • I miss feta. I haven't looked at any labels though.

You would have to specifically seek it out at a specialty store or make it yourself.
I agree, the fear-mongering about soft cheese is pretty ridiculous.

I think places like farmer's markets might sell unpasteurized cheeses.

  • I had wondered about this, too. I love soft cheeses, but also found that everything in the grocery store was made from pasteurized milk.

It is usually small-batch, artisanal cheese. We have a local goat farm that makes goat cheeses and yogurts and sells it at our farmer's market. I'm pretty sure their products are unpasteurized, and of course I want nothing more than to eat some of their chevre! :(( But I can wait until November for it, and in the meantime enjoy store-bought chevre and brie!

Yea it's more than fine! Eat up. The only cheese I avoid is housemade cheese at restaurants, since I suppose there's a small chance it could be made with raw milk, though I doubt it.

Ditto, only I've been using goat cheese on mine! I checked all of the goat cheese labels and all of the packaged stuff at our store is pasteurized.

All imported soft cheeses are pasteurized but domestic, small batch, artisan soft cheeses (which I love) are almost always unpasteurized.

  • I actually bought some unpasteurized cheese from a large grocery store chain. I didn't bother to look because I assumed that there would be no way it could not be pasteurized. If this is something that concerns you then you should definitely check the package.  It was delicious by the way ;)

@lizgrace03‌ It was a couple of months ago so I don't remember the exact name. It was either hard or semi-soft though - not Brie or goat cheese.

I looooooooooooooove Goat Cheese and Gouda... at first I was nervous but like the other ladies said the labels said pasteurized. Therefore I ate a whole block... and than some.
  • I found an unpasteurized brie at Sprouts the other day.  So they do exist!  I always check just to be sure :)

  • For Christmas, my hubby got me Cheese of the Month Club because I love fancy cheeses so much. We got pregnant 2 months later :-P BUT most of the cheese (*most*) are made from pasteurized milk - it's really only small batch, special import, or farm-made cheese that is unsafe unless it's heated, so we usually just use that for sauces or nachos if we get it in the pack. You do have to check, though: I went to a restaurant the other day and I was so glad I asked about their cheese because the only cheese that they had that WAS pasteurized was their Brie, which usually is the one that might not be pasteurized! They get all their ingredients from local farms, though, so that restaurant is an exception - most places use pasteurized milk products.

  • Trader Joes and Whole Foods sell pasteurized feta, I live on the stuff. They also sell a lot of raw, unpasteurized cheeses so you have to be sure to check the labels but it's out there!

The cheese monger at our grocery store figured out I was pregnant because H kept specifically asking her for pasteurized cheeses.  She asked me the next day if I was pregnant!  Our store does sell unpasteurized (or raw milk) cheeses, but it's a tiny selection.  I know Point Reyes blue cheese is made from raw milk, and there are some others.  For the record, H is the one who's super paranoid about raw milk cheese--I eat them all the time when he's not around :D

  • I asked my doctor about this one on Tuesday because I was getting sick of not eating goat cheese.  She said that so long as it's made with pasteurized milk, it's OK.

I still got a big old no on soft-center eggs.  Boo.  All I want is a poached egg on an English Muffin.  I know the chances of salmonella are really small, but I've gotten it before, it's not fun.

I read (*wishing I could provide a citation*) that salmonella is on the shell, so you can just wash the egg first...
Salmonella certainly does suck, but I still lick the batter bowl!
