FTM Pumping - Using Wet Parts

Tomorrow, LO is 3 weeks old and I'd like to start with one-a-day pumping to intro bottle at 4 weeks. I've washed all the Medela PISA parts and will sterilize them. Do I have to wait for all the parts to completely air dry before first use? I know Medela stresses air drying before storing the parts, but can't find anything about using slightly wet parts (like the tubing) for pumping. I would imagine it's okay, because how else would moms be able to pump multiple times a day? Feedback appreciated. :)

Re: FTM Pumping - Using Wet Parts

  • I usually shake the bottles out and use a paper towel to dry the flanges etc. if they are still wet. I had bad luck the other day using a slightly wet valve part... The suction was terrible and it got water into the tubing. You don't need to clean the tubing... Just leave your pump running for a few min after each pump with nothing attached to the tubing and that will suck up the condensation. Check to make sure the tubing is dry before turning it off. My parts are always dry if I wash them right away after pumping. Get a spare set of parts and you shouldn't have to worry about them ever being wet. :)

  • I've pumped with wet parts, but I feel like you should at least let the tubes dry to prevent molding. You can store the flanges and parts in the fridge between pump sessions to minimize the number of times you're at the sink washing pump parts.

Don't wash the tubes.  If you feel the tubes need to be washed, run some isopropyl alcohol down them.  Let the pump run for a few minutes after each session with the open ends of tubing slanted down.  Gravity will get any condensated moisture out of them.

Everything else can be used damp.
