2nd Trimester

Just hired and already having problems!

Hello, my name is Kim and I am 18 weeks pregnant. I just got hired at stop N shop and I was suppose to start work Tuesday. My boss does not know i'm preggo, and I do not plan on telling her. There was a clue that maybe she thinks I am because she said I can change my W2 if I have  another baby this year.

So my first day yesterday, I was suppose to be in at 9 AM and had trouble getting up so I got in at 9:15 AM and I know that is late and apologized right away. She sent me home.

Then today, I left earlier and got there at 5 past 9 AM and got the same reaction if not worse. She then told me to go home again and said they don't really need me that bad and I have not started working for the Union yet, I am not an employee. I filled out all my paperwork, can she really fire me before I even start? She told me to come back tomorrow again at 2:30 to talk to her supervisor to decide what to do. I have had a lot of jobs and I have never been treated this way by a boss, especially the first week. I am really trying and really need this job, but do not like the disrespect that is already starting. It is just plain humiliating! Please help!

  • I really don't know how we can help you. It was on you to show up late, just think when the baby gets here. In the post you said "another" baby. Are you already a mom? Really you just need to organize your time a little better. Everyone understands things happen, but on the first two days? Doesn't give you a good reputation in the work place. I would have made sure to definitely leave way ahead of time for the first day.

  • Another vote for get to work on time and you wouldn't be posting this... DUH.

  • If you keep your job, then realize they are being very kind and generous.  However, I have a feeling you will be let go very soon.

Need to start looking for another job.
  • You have to be on time for work period. I don't think 9am is "optional".

If you reside in a no-fault state they certainly are well within ther rights to fire you. Good luck with the job hunt.

Um, then get to work on time. i don't know what you're looking for here. There is disrespect for sure, but it's on your part for showing up late the first two days. This is a no-brainer.

I'd have fired you already, pregnant or not.
  • As a manager this would not fly, I employ mostly teenagers and they know how to come into work on time.

You need to do some soul searching

  • I was a manager at my last job and I would have fired you the moment you walked in late on day two unless you had a very good reason. Why were you late?

Apparently she "had trouble getting up".  :|

  • Ditto what PPs said. Andplusalso, 9 AM is not early. You should have had no problem getting to work on time. If you can't wake up in time, you should go to bed earlier.

  • You're mentality on this blows my mind OP. Being late for your first two shifts is definitely a reason to be fired. Pregnant or not. Although I'm a SAHM now, I worked throughout my entire first pregnancy and wasn't late a single day. Nor did I leave early, no matter how shitty I was feeling. Yes, pregnancy can be hard to deal with, but you're an adult and you have responsibilities. In just a few months you're about to have even more responsibilities. If you can't be responsible enough to show up to work on time, how are you going to be able to raise a child?

So you were late your first day and left early your second day? And they're disrespecting you

Also, I'm 22 weeks pregnant (although it really doesn't matter) and I manage to get to work on time every day--sometimes, *gasp*, even early! Get it together.

She didn't leave early.  She was late to work both days so they sent her home both days instead of letting her complete her shift.  When she said she left earlier she meant she left her house earlier.

OP, they absolutely can fire you.  I'm guessing she made a bigger deal of it on day two because it was becoming a pattern.  She wasn't happy about it on day one but maybe gave you the benefit of the doubt thinking you didn't realize how long it would take to get there or something.  Day two, not so much.
  • I can't believe she's surprised she got fired for showing up late on the first two days of work.

  • I'd fire you. I wouldn't think twice about it.

  • Yeah.. your work ethic is...nonexistent. i manage to get to work early before my 9 am and I am pregnant. That's not an excuse to be late...that's on you.

As an employee i expect people the be on time so I can leave and pick up my son from school...the later you are the longer I have to stay and cover and a lot of times your 15 minutes means no lunch for me and late pickup for my son so I'd certainly be pissed if you did it 2 days in a row. You've already shown this job isn't required for you.

  • You are being disrespectful to your boss by showing up your first two days late. Honestly, you should be fired. Pregnancy has nothing to do with your situation. I understand you are tired, but a job is a job. You have to abide by the company's policies or risk what is happening right now to you.

  • Well I got another chance to show myself! And Yes  I agree I should tell them Im pregnant. I did tell her I would like afternoon shifts better and agreed to do late morning shifts. I understand I was wrong and someone said I didn't apologize but i did. It's been 3 years work since i worked cuz my hubby usually took care of me. but i am going to take this job seriously and give it my best effort this time!

I raised a child and went to school full time. so i wouldn't judge people before you know them. I have a 2  year old son so this isn't my first rodeo. I'm a great mom. And I made a mistake but I have a chance to redeem myself. Next time I ask for help on here, I all second guess because there is a point to helping or going advice to being just plain rude!!
  • Yeah some people don't change and men can't accept responsibility.
  • My husband is the bread n' bacon winner in our house hold. I worked before I had kids though. How old are these people?!

I would probably laugh in your face for requesting shifts that work best for YOU, especially after you showed up late and basically blew the first 2 days at your new job.

And I'm sorry, but you can't use the excuse "I haven't worked for 3 years because my SO has been taking care of me". Everyone should have some sort of work ethic or sense of responsibility but apparently you don't...?

Once again, @nicb13, you have read my mind and typed it up for me!  :D
