What is the first visit like?

My first appt with my fertility doctor is June 12th, to discuss IVF. I'm pretty nervous. I still cry when I talk about what all has happened and I have no idea what to expect. What do they typically do for the 'consultation' visit?

Sorry, dumb question(s)...just getting anxious. :(

I've only been to the RE once to discuss options. Long story as to why we have been slow-going with getting treatments.

Here's how it went: I went in and the RE called me back to his office. He went over all of my records from my OB with me, then asked me lots of questions. He went over DHs SA. Then he discussed options and asked what I felt about treatments and how aggressive I wanted to be.

After the interview, he did an ultrasound to check out ovaries and uterus and then sent me back for bloodwork. The office hooked me up with an inexpensive genetic screener for me which was huge because it's one of the factors we have to consider if we decide to do treatments.

I don't know if all are like that, but that's how mine went! One thing I didn't like is that he seemed absolutely sure that DS was a complete fluke and miracle. Morphology seems to be our only issue, so I don't know. No one else (doctors) seemed all that concerned. So either he really knows more than everyone else, or he's just very RE about babies and believes that no one can get KU without him.

Depending I what your OB testing indictated (male, female, or combo) they will go over those test results. For our situation we have severe mfi and I had all testing done through OB. We went over our options which happened to only be IVF w ICSI and I had a lot of questions bc I was hopin IUI was an option. They will answer your questions and let you know anything you need to know. We set up w financing and depending how fast you guys move and are ready they might set up a calendar with you. If you are able to ask to at least talk to a nurse about looking at a typical calendar so you can have it in your head what timeline you will look at wether or not you are ready to do financing or not. I think just understanding how long it takes despite being possibly ready to go helped me a lot. Also, most places will have you take an injectables class to go over all meds and that would be before you start taking them (but not necessarily scheduled on first visit admittidly). Anyway, mine was back in 2009(?) so things could be different now, but that is all I remember. Good luck!

This is your first visit with this RE in general, not just for IVF right? They will likely go over your history, ask you a million questions, and talk to you about the specifics. I'm so sorry you're here. Any RE worth their salt will understand that it's emotional and not judge you for being upset. I haven't had specific IVF conversations (stupid uterus is the problem) but I know it's got to be incredibly hard. Thinking of you!

My very first visit ever was just a lot of talking and then ordering blood work.  I didn't cry, but I think that may have been the first conversation I'd ever had about IF without crying.  There's something about the clinical atmosphere that helped me keep it together.

I have my first visit with a new RE this week and I'm nervous, too.  I'm not sure what it will entail since it's been a while since the last labs were done and it's a new Dr.  I don't know what will cary over and what will need to be redone.

When's your visit?  Let us know how it goes!

southernbelle82 I was nervous too, but ended up being relieved by the time we left. Just as everyone has said, they ask a lot of questions, talk about options, make a plan, and take blood. They had me schedule a sono and a few basic tests (which they said would hurt...and did not at all) for the following week. I had a hard time with my OB because I always felt as though I was being annoying and too sensitive. It is amazing working with specialist because they understand your sense of urgency and frustration. Rather than feeling annoying, I now feel like I am being cheered on. Don't be nervous, be excited. Good luck!

Thanks girls!!! There really isn't anything to diagnose so my OB never did any testing. The only reason I'm even considering IVF is because I have no tubes left...so our situation seems a little weird. I just found out today that insurance doesn't help at all with IVF. Deep down I knew this but I was trying to hold out some hope that they would cover even a tiny fraction. Without insurance help, our IVF journey will probably be very short and won't happen.

I always knew fertility 'stuff' was expensive...but never realized just how bad it was. Between IVF being at least $10,000 and adoption being at least $20,000...I'm afraid there will be no more children to add to our family and I'm so very heartbroken.

Agreed and ((hugs)). I did a FET in Nov that failed and pretty much was spiraling down into depression. Then right after Christmas and woke up and was like- I have to do something. Within a week I emptied out my 401k (not an answer for everyone and stupid, but we still have dh's which was like 10x mine bc mine was only a couple years worth) and that covered almost all but meds. Now here we are cycling. I pray something comes up for you and you will get a chance still!!!
