question re: pumping at work

If your work doesn't already have a pumping room established, who would you approach about getting a space for pumping? Your supervisor? Human Resources? I work at a smaller company with about 50 employees. I am the first employee in my department to ever have been pregnant (crazy, right?). The only other people to have been pregnant in the past few years were both "higher ups" and I don't know if they pumped , but I'm sure they used their private offices. I am out in the open.

Re: question re: pumping at work

  • I guess it depends on the relationship you have with your supervisor/HR. It may take a few people working together to find a solution for you anyway so they may both end up involved.

Depends on how you expect your supervisor to respond- if they likely would take up the issue and force a solution to be found I'd do that because IMO it's easier. If not, or if you would be in the least bit uncomfortable brining it up with them, go to HR.

  • I am in this situation. I discussed it with my supervisor and she is handling it. I would only go to HR if my supervisor doesn't provide an appropriate solution. That's how things are handled in my organization though- and going to HR without giving my supervisor an opportunity to handle it would be frowned upon.
  • I'm in a similar situation except a much smaller company (10 employees). Luckily the owner has a private office and is only in once a month or so. When I told my supervisors I was pregnant I also let them know I planned on pumping and would need to use the office daily. They have no issue with it.

I'd talk to your supervisor first and then HR. Good luck!
  • Have a plan ready, suggestions on how you are going to do it.

Definitely haves few suggestions ready. Could you reserve a conference room a few times a day? Are there any spare offices? It might take a little creativity. Not sure when you're going back to work...this is something I brought up before going on maternity leave. Don't leave it till too late.
