Pump longer VS more frequent

It's really hard to get my pumps in with a fussy baby who always wants to be rocked and a toddler who gets into mischief.

When I do get to pump I pump longer (45 mins, sometimes an hour) to try and make up for the pumps I missed.

Would that work or are more pumps more effective than this? I don't want my supply to drop

Re: Pump longer VS more frequent

  • I did that with my first baby, I would hold her while pumping. But this baby needs to be walked around and rocked or swayed or she'll scream.

  • Will she tolerate a swing? I sometimes do that and it keeps him happy for a bit. Or I put him in the boppy on the bed and sit next to him and feed him or play with him.

  • She won't tolerate the swing :(
The other issue is she a big girl, was almost 11lbs at birth. So it's really hard to hold her while pumping since she can't just lay across my chest.

We decided that DH will be on baby duty at night so I can pump while he's home and older DD is asleep. I'll get most of my pumps in early morning, evening and night so I'm pumping more frequently.

When is if safe to drop pumps? My supply is established, I make about 4oz more than LO eats. At what point can I drop pumps and be able to keep making the same amount?

My LO is also super hard to pump with so I do one long pumping session in the morning while LO sleeps and pump for 15, rest for 10, pump 15, rest 10, pump 15. I find this gives more than a single long session does.
