Charlie Girl's unexpected arrival (jshrop's birth story)

I'm mobile y'all, so sorry if there's going to be tons of typos and formatting sucky-ness! Also forgive me but I have a little lump of adorable-ness sleeping on my chest as I type this. :)

So, Wednesday started off no problem. Hubs had gotten home at 5 am from working a 24 hour shift. I had woken up at 3 am with a dull throbbing headache, and my 5 it still wasn't gone. I tried Tylenol to no avail. I had a regular checkup with my midwives at 1 pm. Hubs went to the gym and I planned to meet him immediately after to go to a movie.

When I got to the appointment my bp was elevated... And wouldn't go down. Long story short, the elevated bp accompanied with the headache that still wouldn't go away told the midwives that it was time. They gave me no options really. Just that if I wait, it could become dangerous as I had pre-e symptoms and she needed to come now. They sent me to the hospital for immediate induction.

I arrived at the hospital at about 4:45 pm. They immediately put me on Magnesium IV for the bp. I met with my doctor, who I'm pretty sure was the same age as Doogie Houser. He placed the foley bulb and first round of Cytotec at 6:30 pm. He explained that he thought it would be a day or more before I delivered bc of the magnesium. They offered me the epidural right away. I declined (I still wanted to do it med-free if I could!). After an hour of contracting on the bulb I asked for some pain medication. Morphine rocks FYI. ;)

The doctor outlined every step of the induction to me from then out. I would receive 1-2 rounds of Cytotec, then a round of Pitocin, they would break my water manually (if it hadn't already), and finally on to delivery. They asked me again if I wanted the epidural (this was 2 am). At this point I was exhausted, hurting, and was willing to trust whatever they told me. I looked at my nurse and asked her what she thought I should do. Her reply "honey, if you don't have to feel the pain, why do it? Get it now." I have to say, the epidural rocked! I never felt one contraction. The only reason I felt pain was because the cartridge ran out in the last 5 minutes.

At 9 am the doc manually broke my water. At 10:30 am I was 6 cm and 90% effaced. The doc felt we would be delivering late that evening, but said if I felt a lot of pressure to call. At noon I had this feeling like I had to take the biggest crap of my life RIGHT THAT SECOND OR I WAS GOING TO DIE! They came back and found that I was complete but at zero station. They recommended I labor down for a bit. At 1 pm we started pushing. Apparently I wasn't doing it right because it wasn't working. Around 1:30 the nurse went into my bathroom and came back with a towel. She said we were going to play tug of war. She told me to try and pull her off her feet. That worked like a charm! She progressed extremely quickly at that point!

At 2:21 pm little Charlie made her entrance into the world. I had asked to have delayed cord clamping, kangaroo care, and have my husband cut the cord. I was confused as to why the room got quiet hurried and the doc immediately cut the cord and handed her off to the baby nurses. My husband started to object and the doc looked at him and told him to go focus on his daughter.

FYI: at this point I will talk about the after which I experienced something I had never heard of before. It was violent and is graphic. Be forewarned!

Apparently I had started to hemorrhage and was passing huge clots. The doc delivered the placenta and then shoved her whole hand inside my uterus to clean away all the clots that had formed on the walls of my uterus. They needed to make sure they were all out. They did this for about 5 minutes. I was screaming and begging them to stop. Birth did not hurt.... This was excruciating. Then the nurse began the fundal massage and trying to make sure it was all out. Even more excruciating. Again, my epidural had run out at this point and I was feeling everything. I even told them I would sign a waiver excluding them from any liability, just for the live of god stop! When they were finally done they were able to explain everything that had happened. Even with all that they did, I ended up with a tiny tear that required a single stitch.

So in the end, I had to stay hospitalized from Wednesday until Saturday.

TL; DR Charlotte Memphis was born at 2:21 pm on May 22. She was 7 lbs 4 oz and 18.5 inches long. And here's what you REALLY clicked on this for: PHOTOS!!! (She makes the best faces :) )imageimageimageimageimageimage
