3rd Trimester

Restless legs

This feeling is driving me crazy! It doesn't start until I'm just about to fall asleep. I can even be laying in bed for a while without problem. I've never really had RLS, but this has been ongoing for about the last couple of weeks. I'm 32w4d. In high school, I had a lot of trouble with insomnia and would experience this occasionally. I know it sounds silly, but if I would hold my leg straight up for several minutes, it would go away. Anyone else experience this? Any other recommendations?

Re: Restless legs

  • Seriously try drinking pickle juice

  • It is a common pregnancy symptom. Here is some info from WebMD:

"RLS in pregnancy might be triggered by a lack of enough folic acid or iron. There's also some evidence that rising estrogen levels during pregnancy may contribute to RLS. Before you take any medicine for restless legs syndrome, your doctor should check your iron levels. If you're low, you can take an iron supplement. In many cases where the supply of iron in the body is low a supplement will be enough to correct RLS.

Whenever you wake up with RLS, try these tips to make the gnawing feeling go away so you can get back to sleep:

    • Massage your legs.
    • Apply a warm or cold compress to your leg muscles.
    • Get up and walk or stretch your legs.
    • Read or watch TV to distract yourself.

Restless legs syndrome can resolve after giving birth. Within a few days after your baby is born it in many cases will disappear."

    I hope that helps!

  • Thanks, everyone. Justabean3, if I could drink pickle juice, I would definitely try it. I've tried liking pickles several times and just can't accomplish it. I'll try some of these suggestions.

With my 1st baby I thought I couldn't do it either and took a sip. I thought it was soooo good.

BUT maybe something else salty. I'm not sure what is in it other than salt that would help.
  • Interesting it is also caused by low iron. I had a transfusion for that at delivery, maybe that is partially why I had it then.
  • @Justabean3‌ really, pickle juice? I love that anyways so def worth a try!!

I swear someone else told me. I drank like 2-3 swallows the first night since I wasn't a fan and slept like a baby. Then I started drinking like 2-4 oz at a time.
  • My OB told me to take magnesium supplements, so I have been all along and now it's not working as well, I think because I'm at the very end. So now they are telling me to drink Gatorade.
  • I have been dealing with RLS since I was about 24 weeks and it gets worse after a long day of work.  I drink a ton of gatorade, but have been slacking on my prenatals since about 30 weeks - should probably get better with that.  Anyways, thanks for the tips!

  • Molasses. I've had rls for years and its way worse when I an pregnant. A tablespoon of molasses each night helps. Its got loads of iron and potassium and it definitely helps. A little hard to swallow initially, but you get used to it. A little juice after both helps with the taste and the vitamin c helps with the iron absorption.
