Food Allergy

possible peanut allergy- frustrated with dr

Last night I fed my 13 mo DD apples with pb (she has had apples countless times and peanut butter 3-4 times).  She wasn't wearing a shirt and dribbled a good bit of the juice on her belly, which broke out in hives, along with the area around her mouth and her eye where she rubbed it with her hand.  She didn't have any breathing difficulty, thank God.  We gave her Benadryl and all was well.

My question/vent is that when I called the doctor today, the nurse I spoke with acted like it was nbd...basically said mention it to the doctor at her next well baby visit (in 2 mo) and avoid nuts until then.  I feel like they should be taking a more proactive approach (and I will push for that), but then I wondered if I was just overreacting?

For those moms with allergy experience, would you wait or would you push to test sooner?

Re: possible peanut allergy- frustrated with dr

  • Hi! My son is 2.9yrs and has peanut allergies and I myself am severely anaphylactic to tree nuts. Honestly, what the nurse said kind of makes sense. Allergy testing may give you a positive result but ultimately, you saw your child's reaction and the protocol would be the same. With a peanut allergy, they'll test for other nuts but allergists always say that if you're allergic to one nut, avoid them all. So, avoiding peanuts and any tree nut product is your safest bet. Often the first reaction is the least severe and repeated exposure can build into anaphylaxis. The only think I would push for immediately is an Epipen Jr. God forbid you're at a restaurant and something is cross contaminated! I'm sorry you're dealing with this :( Allergies are scary stuff! Good luck!
  • You're not overreacting...if nothing else, the pedi can give you a prescription for an epi and you should definitely get that. The allergy testing can probably wait 2 months (although you'll want to go to an allergist so why wait?) but you should be prepared with epi and avoidance plan.

  • I just wanted to add that in my experience that pediatricians don't seem to be very educated at all when it comes to food allergies. For that reason alone, I would find an allergist asap just so you have someone to confirm your daughter's allergy, get you an Epi-pen and so you have someone to call with questions/concerns.

  • I would also suggest going straight to a allergist if you don't need a referal. We went to ped and they sent us for blood test. It confirmed peanut allergy then they sent to specialist. They did a scratch test which again confirmed. FYI if happens again and there is no difficulty breathing or swelling of mouth or lips (call 911 if so) give LO a bath. That helped us clear most away. Good luck! I know how scary it is!!!!
  • Oh and if you need Epi pen go on the epi pen website and you can get coupons that will pay copays
