Transitioning to a convertible car seat

Is anyone else transitioning to a convertible car seat soon? My DS is 14 weeks old, and is getting heavy to carry around in the bucket infant car seat. We bought another Chicco Nextfit convertible car seat for him; same car seat that our 20 month old DD. She is still rear facing in hers. I plan on rear facing both kiddos until they're two years old since it's safer. Anyone else switching car seats?

I feel like DS is growing up so fast! I didn't transition DD into a convertible car seat until she was 10 months old. But she was a tiny preemie baby, so carrying the bucket with her was fine. I can't imagine how BIG and HEAVY DS will be if I had to carry him in a bucket at 10 months.

Not switching anytime soon... You realize you could treat the infant seat like a regular one, right? You don't have to take the seat out every time you take him out of the car. I rarely do.

    This.

IIRC your daughter was a 32-weeker? My son is a 32-weeker too. By 10 months they should be very close to being on track with their actual age.
I mean, DS is 4 months old and *almost* on the growth charts for his actual age, and he was iugr at birth. (Well, he was almost there before surgery. Obvs I have no idea how much he weighs now but I'm sure he lost while he was on iv nutrition and not feeds) Our ped says that by 1 year he will be on track. Not 95th percentile, but on track.

Just saying... Your argument has no traction.

We won't switch car seats until we actually need to. Because why would we?

Don't put the cart before the horse? Or something like that

  • Pretty much what everyone else already said. I don't carry DD in the car seat, didn't with DS either, except on rare occasions. But I still use it and will for quite awhile I'm sure.

  • Not worrying about this until he reaches the limit for his infant seat. If it gets too heavy to carry, I'll leave it snapped in the car and just put him in or out. Easy peasy.

Maybe it should be don't put the cart ahead of the horse.

No? Oh well. At least it entertained me while dd refused to nap anywhere other than on me.

I'll switch DS2 out of the bucket soon - I'm not a big fan of buckets. I switched DS1 at five months because 1) the bucket we have is heavy; 2) it's difficult to get baby in and out of bucket if we leave it in the car; and 3) our RF convertibles actually take up less space than our bucket. (Britax Chaperone)

I think it's a valid question. Not everyone uses the buckets until a year - it's all a matter of personal taste. If DS weren't a winter baby, I prob would've gone straight to the convertible.

@golfergirl08‌ - We have the Britax Boulevard and the Chicco NextFit, and the Chaperone takes up more room between the back and front seats than both. (translates to amount of leg room for front passenger seat for us)

  • My infant seat only goes to 22 lbs and my LO is getting pretty close to that (at two months she already weighed 16 lbs). So we'll be transitioning because we have to.

I agree with pp I would try and use the infant seat as long as I could.

You'll probably find that weight gain will slow considerably soon, so you'll likely get more use out of it than it might seem now. :)

I hope your right because as of today we only have two more pounds till we hit the limit. Eeek!
