Name Dilemma

edited May 2014 in October 2014 Moms

I told myself I'd never do this, but DH and I are having a hard time agreeing on a name for baby girl. I searched for each of them over on the Baby Names board and HOLY CROW, I'd rather ask my BMB, because I know you guys won't be as horrible as some of them can be. We like both names, but DH likes one more and I like the other a little more. Could you do me a favor and vote, and maybe give your reasoning on why you like it more than the other? Without being too harsh or telling me "well I knew a prostitute with 37 STDs with that name once". I don't want to think of something like that every time I think of baby girl's name. I'm overly sensitive on this subject but I need your girls' help. :-<

ETA: Aerilyn is pronounced just like Marilyn, without the M. I'm open to alternate spelling suggestions as well, to make it easier to pronounce.

  • I like Henley Lauraine. I don't know, I think it just flows better.

Yep, I actually like Henley Elise too!

DH got very frustrated with me when discussing names because kept saying I once new a....

    Good luck!

  • I feel like both choices have made up names in them.....are you going for Lorraine for the middle name for Henley?

I'd vote Henley of the two first names because it's actually a name and your child won't be spelling it out her entire life and having people still being confused and not knowing how to pronounce it, ever.
My mom's middle name is Lauraine. Mine is Lorraine. So I wanted to do Lauraine as sort of an homage to my mom. I found both of them on a name site, so I consider them both actual names. I've just never heard either of them before and I think they're pretty and different. Like I said, if there's an alternate way to spell Aerilyn that wouldn't cause confusion I'm open to it. Maybe Aralynn. Or something along those lines.

  • I think Henley Lauraine flows better. If the other was Marilyn instead it would be my first choice but the 2 vowel starts is a bit harder to say. I would be worried about constant mispronouncing and misspelling. Its not too out there though. I also really like the combination of Aerilyn Lauraine.

  • I think they both sound pretty but I like Aerilyn better. Maybe because I've never heard it?

  • I was thinking what @PurpleHippo19‌ said. Of the options, I would choose Henley. However, I prefer the sound of Henley Elise to Henley Lauraine.

Aerilyn looks made up to me, and even if I tell myself over and over to say "Marilyn" without the M, it's still hard for me to say. To be perfectly honest, I feel like I would expect to see that name in a scifi/fantasy novel. ::hides face:: ...love you, @MrsSinner402‌! Please don't take that personally!

I searched for Aerilyn on behindthename.com and couldn't find it. Is it a family name? Where did you find it?

I think Aerliyn sounds like an Elven name from Lord of the Rings, and I'm completely ok with that! So no worries :) I found it on TB actually. In the names tab I believe. Just rifling through the A's.

  • I like Henley better. I pronounced Aerilyn correctly before your clarification so I don't think it's difficult.
  • @MrsSinner402‌ Have you considered Marilyn? Here are some other ideas:

    Adalynn or Adaline
    Aderyn (means "bird" in Welsh)
    Adrienne
    Aideen
    Ainsley
    Alyssa
    Amy or Aimee

  • I chose Henley because it would be easier to spell.  I like the way Aerilyn sounds (if I'm pronouncing it correctly), but if you had told me the name then asked me to spell it based on what it sounds like, we would have not ended up with the same name.

I LOVE Tolkein and Lewis. Also a fan of the author David Eddings. Not same calibre but I do enjoy his novels. :) He has a character named Ehlana. Growing up, I loved that name! Actually...my username comes from the name of a character in another book of his. :\">

oh oh oh!! Ehlana was top on our list for awhile.  My husband made me listen to three of Eddings' books on our recent road trip.  Then we decided on Kaylee, after the Firefly character.  Yay for fellow nerds!

That is so funny! Emerald is a character from his book The Redemption of Althalus. She is a goddess who spends most of her time as a cat, and who looks after Althalus as his character develops. It's a long book but a great read. :-B

I love Aerilyn but not sure about the spelling. I'm a teacher with a unique name of my own so I know how hard it can be when people never get your name right and how hard it is to guess how names are pronounced. Maybe Aralynn?? Not sure...
  • I like Henley a lot but my literature loving side is loving the Aerilyn - sounds like a fantasy heroine for sure!

I never have a problem with the whole won't be able to spell it/pronounce it crap. Who cares? I spell my last name all the time - just used to it and doesn't bother me in the least. I am also a teacher and I just ask students to help me pronounce their name. I think it actually helps me remember who they are when they aren't one of seven Sarahs (as I am).

Anyway I voted for Henley! And your names are lovely.

Oooo I do like the suggestion of Aerie Lynn Elise Lastname! Cool idea, @MrsOzz!

I was also just thinking, maybe it would be easier to pronounce/spell just spelled Arilyn, without the 'e'?

    Baby names are SO fun!

Its ok. I dont like that it sounds like "airy-lyn" instead of "air-uh-lyn". The E sound in there isn't what we're going for.

I am usually a fan of more traditional names, but I really like the sound of Aerilyn.  I think it's really pretty.  I just can't come up with a way to spell that I think looks nice and would be easy to pronounce.

    Aralyn or Aralynn maybe?  Arilyn?

I'm trying too. I worry without the Aeri then people may pronounce the beginning as "are" rather than "air".

  • Henley is adorable for a little girl!
    Baby #1: Palmer Olivia - October 2014

  • I voted Aerilyn Elise. Love Aerilyn just the way it is and I'm biased on Elise. I dont mind Henley, it just makes me think of the shirt.

Coming from someone with a fairly common name with its common/traditional spelling, Morgan, I get asked how I spell it ALL THE TIME. Like more often than you'd think. I also get people saying "Megan?" makes me wonder if I'm saying it weird or something. Same with my daughter, people ask how to pronounce her name too. It's JAH-na btw, not gee-AH-na and we also get people mishearing us "Jenna?" is a big one but we've also gotten 'Shawna' which I guess sounds kinda similar but come on people those aren't even the same letters.

So I figure uncommon or not, you're going to get people asking you how you spell/pronounce/whatever so pick the name you love.

I like Arylin Henley - and I would prefer it spelled without the E in Aerilyn.  I think with the E it makes it hard to pronounce for people and they will mess up her name. :D

I'm a fan of Aerilyn. Henley reminds me of Don Henley and I'm not a fan of girl names that make me think of guys. I like Aerilyn because it sounds like a fairy name and the LOTR feel to it.

  • I don't think you should pick something just because people will know how to pronounce or spell it. I went from a really long German last name that people could never spell or say right to a 5 letter last name that people STILL cant pronounce or spell right! It's always going to be there!

I like Aerilyn - for me it just looks prettier and more feminine than Henley.

Regarding the spelling, I think you will have issues with both names. To me both names are not very common (Henley is 831 on the SSA list and Aerilyn doesn't show up at all) and people will likely ask for spelling for Aerilyn (it sounds more complicated to spell) but then mis-spell Henley without asking for the spelling. Just my opinion.

I have a super complicated last name with lots of n's and m's and you just get used to spelling things over the phone when you have to. And I use a pseudonym at places like Starbucks etc. because it is just a lot easier.

  • I voted for Aerilyn because it seems beautiful and unique - Henley is also very pretty, but I've heard it on a few boys before and it sounds more like a typical trendy name.
  • I voted for Henley for a few different reasons.

    1.  It's only one letter away from my maiden name ;)  If I could get away with that for my own child, I totally would.

    2.  I'm not a fan of overly girly names.

    3.  I think Henley sounds more funky and relaxed than Aerilyn.  But that's my style.  When I've been thinking about names for my baby, I always try to picture them as an adult and what they would be like with the name I'm choosing.  I feel like people take on the personalities of their names more often than not and funky and relaxed sounds better than girlie and fairy like.  But again, that's just my style.. don't hate me!!
