Re: UO Thursday

  • @BellaOso I wouldn't ever do that. It seems off to me. And also... after playing with poop shouldn't a warm bath be necessary to clean off LO's hands with warm soap and water? Does cold water clean that shit up? (Muahaha.)

On the topic of discipline, my toddler (2 years 3 months,) had started playing with her poop. Apparently this is extremely common, and when I looked for advice about what to do, many people suggested that you give the child a cold shower to clean them off rather than a warm bath. They theorized that the warm bath made the poop playing time even more desirable because it was followed by a fun bath. A cold shower takes away the fun.  I was horrified. Maybe it is because my toddler is/was/will be a sparkler, but I could never give her a cold shower. I tried the more passive methods - diaper on backwards, talking to her about it without having a big reaction, offering an alternative (play-doh,) keeping her in a onesie or something that made the poo harder to access, etc. It has died down pretty quickly, but oh my - that is a phase I am not looking forward to going through again.

So what does A13 think of this method of "correction". Am I just being a sensitive Sally or is that pretty awful?
I couldn't do it, ever. I don't think you're being a sensitive Sally at all.

I had someone suggest putting DS in a cold shower if he threw a tantrum.. I have never heard of doing that

@pwhoskins‌ did you just say you "swatted" your 9 month old?
Yes I did. And no it wasn't a spanking or anything that was painful just something that got LO's attention as she keeps trying to touch the glass of the fireplace and I don't want her to burn her hand. And when I say on the butt, I meant a fully diapered and clothed butt.

That being said, my wife corrected my actions and explained to me that our LO probably doesn't know why she was swatted or that it was even me. She also shared a couple of articles that gave good examples of discipline at this age such as saying No and Redirecting her attention.

She a good mom and definitely has no problem putting me in my place. It was only once that I did this, and have not done it since. As a first time dad and not really being around other babies, I didn't think about what could be wrong with doing that.
There are baby gates or gated play yards you can install to keep her away from that until she is old enough to understand.

@pwhoskins‌ UO= unpopular opinion My UO: DO not tell your children that I ( police officer) will arrest them when you see me. Don't teach your children to fear and hate me. Teach them to respect us. We don't punish children that's the parents job. Eta: this happened 4 separate times yesterday with children 6 and under.
I don't get WTF these parents are thinking.  Don't they also teach their kids to find a cop if they ever get lost and to call 911 in an emergency?  Why would you want to teach your child to be afraid of the very people you need them to go to for help?  "If something bad happens or you get separated from mommy, find a police officer to help you...they will arrest you and take you to prison and you will never see your family again"  Nice parenting.

I dont think this is acceptable. I think you did what was right. My 2 year old nephew was in tgis phase a few months ago while i was caring for him and what we did was to put a sleep sack on him backwards so he couldnt get to his poop or if he was wearing zippered pajamas at bedtime putting a tshirt on over the zipper. Thisr both worked really well and there was no need for cold showers

I was spanked once as a kid.  I was 5, and I darted across the street without looking.  There was no cars, and I definitely knew better. My dad was so mad, and I ended up getting spanked.  But I never did it again.

That being said, I think that spanking isn't something that should be done every time a child is doing something wrong.  Strong verbal correction can teach right from wrong.  But I also know that the one time that I was spanked, I knew I was in trouble, and the severity of the "crime", and I definitely learned my lesson.
I agree with this.  Spanking should be reserved for things like that, where the child is putting themselves in danger and you need the incident to really make and impression so it doesn't happen again.  I was spanked as a kid for just general misbehaving.  It didn't damage me but it also didn't do much for discipline since it was kind of unpredictable what would warrant a spanking and what wouldn't and just made me fear my mom as an unpredictable angry person.  Then I got older and she wouldn't actually spank me anymore but kept threatening to, so then I didn't respect her as someone who makes empty threats.

@revez We did have some Tim's around here for a year or so. The donuts were ok, but no competition to DD.

I do miss the Tim Horton's. They used to have Coldstone's attached!
Yeah, we had a Tim's too in CT...but it lasted about a year here too - I never saw the excitement for it.  Wasn't it the croissants or something?
I think you're right about the croissants. The draw in for me was the Coldstone. Now that there are no Tim's, there are much less Coldstones. Stupid froyo putting them out of business.
Sorry to tell ya, we still have our Coldstones!!!  ;-)  But right a few steps away...Pinkberry.  Damn froyo.

My UO - I loathe getting my hair done. I mean, I love my stylist and I love talking to her, I love the way I feel afterwards, but I hate sitting still that long. It makes me insane.
My UO is that I don't like chatting with hair stylists, manicurists, and other service providers that I have to spend an hour of time with one on one.  I'm not the type to gossip about my personal life with essentially strangers (especially if they are gossiping about their other clients to me) and I don't have enough small talk skills to keep up a conversation about nothing for an hour.  I would prefer to just read a magazine while they work and talk to their colleagues.
@vulpini I feel the same exact way. I probably look like such a hermit.

    I always liked Joey Fatone.

Not so much anymore. Especially after his Bosley hair commercials.
