Glucose Test-bleh!

Just pounded my nasty glucose lime drink. Bleh! Made my throat burn. So, now I sit for an hour and wait for my blood to be drawn.

Does anyone have any glucose test stories to share? Those that had GD, were you surprised? Were you having other symptoms?

Re: Glucose Test-bleh!

  • I'm 12 weeks...but I'm taking it earlier than most because of family history with diabetes.

  • Do me a favor: tell me about this. Does everyone have to do it? Do you just have to do it if your blood draw shows a reason to be concerned? When do they do it?

Everyone has to do it. Most times it's later in your pregnancy I think 26wks?!

  • Most of the time they make you do a 1hr test where you drink a super sugary drink wait an hour and get your blood drawn. I failed it horribly with both boys and had to a 3hr test and passed it twice.

  • Awww, Glucose test in first trimester? I couldn't even imagine doing that right now! Good luck! No stories to share, but just here to offer sympathy ;)

Yup! I think you'll have time to wait unless you are overweight and/or have a family history of diabetes. To be honest. I'm happy to get it over with.

@gradschoolmom1234 -- they suggest that everyone does it; you can refuse it, though. Also, some midwives/more natural leaning OBs will let you use a glucose monitor for a couple days or eat a snickers/drink a coke instead of the vile syrupy crap they give you at the lab. Usually it's around 26-28 weeks unless you have a history of GD or family history that makes them check sooner. I flunked my 1 hr with DS but passed the 4hr; hated every moment of it and will probably refuse it this time or do the glucose monitor. Lots of false positives on the 1hr.

I'm 12.5 weeks, so my queasy-ness has mostly passed. I can't imagine getting this done a few weeks ago...I definitely would have barfed.
  • I am really not looking forward to that test. It's so gross. I remember dh laughing at me for having a hard time drinking it (I made him come and keep me company). I had a drop or so left and made him try it. I got an apology after he tasted it.

  • I had GD with DD so I had to do it at 8 weeks this time. Ick. I was surprised I passed. I doubt ill pass the 24 week test.

And no symptoms when I had it last time. Not even when my numbers wouldnt stay in check and I needed insuline.

  • I did my 3-hour fasting glucose 2 weeks ago, but I still haven't heard anything from the OB about it. I got dehydrated after my 2nd blood draw...if I ever have to do this again, I will be sure to drink more water before I have my test done since you're not allowed to drink during the test.

I had red for my 1 hour glucose, and orange for my 3-hour fasting glucose. I gag just thinking about it.

  • I have to do mine this week (at 9 weeks) I'm dreading it. I've heard so many horror stories. And so worried about failing :(
  • kayak11kayak11 member
I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour last time. I was taking the 3 hour at the same time as another girl and she threw up right before her last blood draw....the nurse told her she'd have to do the whole thing again on another day :(

  • I'm so glad it is over. Stopped on my way home at a farmers market and got pepperoni bread and fried dough...figured if I got diabetes, I may as well go out in style!

This for me too. My practice does it 26 weeks but with my history of hypoglycemia and failing the test in my last pregnancy, they are having me test at 15 weeks.

I was afraid I'd throw up. After the drink I felt so sick, but I kept reminding myself that if I threw up I'd have to come in and do it again.
I went to Denny's and had blueberry pancakes after. Like @PacoCat33, I figured I might as well go out swinging.

  • Thanks for the info on this board.  I think I may have to do it at my 12 week appointment because I am overweight.  Luckily, no history of diabetes in the immediate family.

Good to know I can refuse or put it off.  And also that if I fail the 1 hour, not to worry cuz it sounds like there are a lot of false positives.  I'll ask my doc at the next appointment, thanks again for the info all!

I have to do mine early too, I'm guessing because I'm overweight. I am not looking forward to it, and I really hope I pass.

    Good luck, everyone!

  • I was so sad when my lab stopped using the carbonated kind, the bubbles made it a little more bearable!

I had GD with my younger son, I failed the 1hr, but I didn't take the 3hr, my OB let me self monitor (with a home machine) and it worked out well for us :) And I don't have to test early.

Like PPs said, you don't HAVE to do the test, but it is good to check because GD doesn't have any real symptoms. And you used to be able to do it with jelly beans! Lol, my Aunt who has been a nurse for a long time remembers administering them that way.

I'm overweight, and my OB said they can basically do it any time, but usually wait until the 2nd trimester when you're not feeling so sick.  She said it's cruel to make someone w/ MS do the test.

  • I had to do it at 7 weeks due to family history and DD being over 9 lbs at birth. It definitely goes a lot easier if the stuff is refrigerated in my opinion.

Luckily, I passed the 7 week one, so I didn't have to do a 3 hour test this time around. I did not have GD with DD (and she is still off the charts for height and 90th percentile for weight), so fingers crossed I won't again!

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I didn't think the 1 hr test was that bad. I didn't have to do it in the first trimester (which would be awful), but it was long after my m/s passed, I think like 24-26 weeks.  It was just like drinking a really sweet, flat soda. Wait an hour, blood draw, be on your way.  The three hour one was much worse because you can't eat and my arms were sore from the blood draws.

I will say this: Make sure the lab tech LABELS YOUR SAMPLES.  Mine did not and I had to go back and redo the one hour test.

  • I had mine at nine weeks and I am in the "it's not that bad" camp. I had psyched myself up for it because my BFF talked about how awful it was. In the end, I got to the lab an hour and ten mins before it was due to close and the tech handed me the orange stuff and said "drink fast." I chugged that shit like it was water on a hot day. I think that is the key, because I barely tasted it. I just kept going until it was gone. And the best news is-- I passed with flying colors! :)

I always opt for the orange drink - so much better!

They do them 10-12 weeks here and again later on which I failed by 1 pt with my first pregnancy so I had the joy of the 3 hour and early lost my mind.

One hour test boredom wasn't too bad since I'm addicted to the 2048 cell phone game.
  • New here but chiming in. I just did my first one (1hr) this morning. The lime flavor gave me TERRIBLE heartburn BUT I found that keeping it in a coozie so it stays ice cold and drinking it with a straw made it bearable. (The heartburn not so much lol) My doctor wants to stay on top of my sugar because my husbands family makes HUGE babies and my height and weight tipped my BMI into the "better safe than sorry" zone.
