I hate clothes shopping.  I'm heavier now, so that's a challenge in and of itself because the fashion industry apparently thinks fat people don't care about their clothes and designs the most hideous plus-sized clothing.  But even when I was relatively thin, I hated it too--big hips and big chest=hard to find clothes that fit in those areas that don't drown you everywhere else.

Obviously I agree @BC&LM‌, I would rather have a name that was too popular, then a made up name that no one knows how to spell or pronounce. I know O's name is super popular, but we both really liked it and we don't know any others. I'm super opinionated about names. Made up and/or misspelled names make me super ragey.
meee tooo...I have a girlfriend with a beautiful girl Cobie...her middle name has an accent on one of the letters, I'm like how is a first grader going to be able to spell or pronounce these names?!

Do you think she's going to have a problem with Cobie or just the MN? Because Cobie seems fine to me!

Well, their last name lends Cobie to be a steak-related nickname, which isn't the best for a girl, but yeah, the combo of first middle last will be a tongue twister, let alone trying to spell it out.

I will qualify all my name-related issues with the fact that my name is Breanna and is pronounced Breeeee-ann-na and (sorry to anyone I'm offending) I don't think any of the other (mis)spellings of my name can be reasonably pronounced the same (Briana, Brianna, etc)

I agree with all of this! In fact, if I remember your daughter's name correctly, it was one of the ones we really liked if we had a girl.
  • Long time lurker here.  While we are on the topic, what do you all think about the name Norella?  I always like Ella but my DH wanted something a little unique.  Her middle name is Jo.  I just want some honest opinions.  Thanks!

I will start a controversy over this... I agree with cyber school but I don't believe in homeschooling when a parent is doing it past elementary or middle school (unless the parent is a certified teacher). The difference to me is that a certified teacher is instructing through cyber school and tracking progress. Maybe I'm ignorant to the resources available to homeschooled children as I have no experience with it. How could a parent possibly instruct on chemistry, geometry, etc?
In general, I'm not a huge fan of homeschooling, but I think it makes sense in some situations.  Also, I feel that there are some people who don't have a certification who could handle home schooling on their own with the proper resources.  I actually would feel more comfortable teaching the high school subjects to my son than the stuff they do in the lower grades.  If they get behind in reading and math early on, it's much harder to get them back on grade level than later in life.

I guess I'm unpopular with others in this thread but we didn't want a popular name and def considered popularity when looking at names. We vetoed any in the top 25. But that doesn't mean we wanted a you-neek name. There are a lot of names that aren't really popular that are beautiful, legit, correctly spelled names.
I don't think there is necessarily anything wrong with that if you truly love a name that is less popular.  But I don't understand when people say the only name I love is X, but I can't use it because it's number 20.  Plus, a "popular" name today isn't the same as a popular name twenty to thirty years ago; the top 5 names now make up a much smaller percent of the overall names than back when we were kids.

I am Amie- suppose to be pronounced  'Ah-May"  Well that didn't happen, my mom got tired of correcting people.  So I am Amie spelled a weird way.  Oh Well.  I stayed away from the popular  names because I didn't want my DD to have the same name as everyone else.  Amy was one of the most popular names for 7 years when I was born.  So we went traditional and no weird spelling.  And named her after my mom.  Her Daycare has been open for 7 years and she is the first Nancy to attend.

I missed last weeks UO so I hope I am not repeating  but I hate Smash Cakes and Smash Cake pictures.  Cute maybe but to buy a cake just to be smashed seems like a waste of a perfectly good cake.

  • We name our kids after saints. Ds1 has an unusual name but ds2's name is fairly common. My parents say that ds1 will drop his first name and go by his middle name but I doubt it. Everybody says how they love it.

I know 2 homeschooling families. My ob has 12 kids and his wife, a physician turned sahm, home schools them. Their oldest children are in medical school and I'm sure the younger ones will follow suit. The other family has extremely intelligent children as well. I think that homeschooling works for some people.

I also think cake smashing photos are silly.

My UO: I don't think wearing your seat belt should be a law, over the age of 18. I also don't think it should be a law to wear a helmet on a motorcycle. Stupid not to? of course, on both accounts. But no seat belts fit me correctly no matter how I adjust them and the result is uncomfortable rubbing on my hip or neck.

(I don't feel terribly strongly about this UO, and could be persuaded differently.)

I assume the thinking is that non-seatbelt wearers could become projectiles and seriously injure others in a bad crash.  From a public health perspective, it makes sense.

    This is my thinking.

I don't think kids need a birthday party every year.
So how do you decide which year to give them one? I'm not really into birthday parties under the age of 3, but I don't get this. Do you throw them one every other year?

  • @stargazer763 - I definitely agree.  Both sets of parents send us a card, and the ILs maybe put in a small check, but even that seems above and beyond.  My older brother did explicitly tell me when I got married that he'd be more excited the longer we stayed married, but that doesn't mean he's sending us stuff now ;-)

@LimaBeanMOM - LO goes by his middle name too.  It's tradition in DH's family, so we just put the name we wanted to call him in the middle and the more family/traditional name up front.  I like that it gives LO some options.  DH has decided to keep being called by his middle name into adulthood, but his brother decided that he had outgrown that and now goes by his first name (though that was a doozy of hard transition for close family!).

In terms of popularity of names - it doesn't really bother me to name a kid a name that's on the tops of the SSA list.  My name was super popular, and I think one year at summer camp there were 7 of us.  Didn't bother me at all, and it was kind of fun!  As long as it's a name that you like and think is right for your LO - go for it.  That being said, one of DH's favorite girl names is #3 on the SSA list for 2013, so I might encourage us to look at the other names on our list (with the giant assumption that we might have a girl at some point).

  • About seatbelts - Yeah yeah.. they are uncomfortable, but I hear being dead is way more uncomfortable.  It drives me crazy that people don't wear seat belts. If it is cutting in to your neck, you can get a seat belt adjusting clips to make it cross your body at a more comfortable place (They sell two packs of them on Amazon for $8).  I don't use them now, but I did as a kid - work wonders.

And about birthday parties- we didn't have a birthday party every year when I was growing up.  We celebrated our birthday every year, but we didn't have a full out party every year.  I am not sure how it was really decided, but I felt like I had a big friends birthday party maybe like every other year and none of us really had parties until we were 5.  B is having a party this year, but after this year, we will probably just have our parents over for the next couple years and then have something on the bigger side with his friends when he turns 5.
