Cloth Diapering

Room for one more mum and baby bum?

Hi.  I am new to this board...  have lurked a bit.  I hope I don't say or ask anything stupid.  :P

With our first child we couldn't use CDs.  (We lived in a building right downtown with coin laundry).  But we did do EC starting at 10 days old.  Quite casually at first... then we got more intentional at 4 months and had amazing results.  So we used very few of those beige disposables, fortunately!  (I hope "EC" isn't a dirty acronym here....)

Anyway, we will definitely do EC again.  We didn't change any poopy pants after 6 months...   :)   Pee took a little longer.  (around 11 months during the day, and about 17 months at night.)   We weren't in a huge rush.

However...  I do want to use cloth this time for when the baby is in a diaper...  And I am trying to educate myself.  AIOs sounded attractive at first.  But now I am thinking prefolds, workhorses and covers.  DD wore diapers day and night till 6 months last time (with potty breaks when convenient and necessary)....  and then underwear at home during the day and diapers at night after that.

So I am thinking I won't need a huge stash.  I will probably get a decent amount of smaller sizes at first.  (How many covers does an infant need per day?)   From what I have heard I think I am interested in Blueberry coveralls....  and maybe some Kawaii covers (can't beat the price.)   Then I will get a good stack of prefolds and some workhorses.

Anyway, we are looking forward to using cloth this time.  It is just kind of hard to know how much to buy to start out with.  And the fancy laundry instructions intimidate me a bit...  but usually laundry is DH's job.

Any advice you can offer would be appreciated!

  • The size of your stash will probably be the same whether baby wears them for 6 months or three years. It is based on how often you do laundry. You will want at least 36 newborn size changes, and 24 one size changes for washing every other day.
For a nb, 6-8 covers is a safe bet, and 4-5 covers after that.

Kawaii covers are so-so in my opinion, and you can find better for the same or cheaper.

Laundry really is not that complicated. Rinse, wash, rinse. A Lot of newer machines can be set to do it automatically.

That's what I would recommend as well. About $5 and 10x better than my kawaiis.
