Constantly wants to eat

My son, who will be 2 at the end of June, is constantly asking for "cookies" (though that's his general term for a snack). I provide him with plenty of fruit and other healthy snacks (and sometimes cookies) and he has constant access to water if he's thirsty(and milk. No soda or sugary drinks). He gets 3 solid meals a day (sometimes 4 small ones if it's a super active day) but always seems to be asking for more. I didn't have this issue with my daughter. Are boys just that much different?

Re: Constantly wants to eat

  • Growth spurt? Are you giving him food when he asks?

  • Not always because sometimes it's like 20 min after he just ate. But if it's a reasonable time frame then yes.
So far today he has eaten a large banana, 2 pancakes with no syrup, 1 cup goldfish crackers, 1 cup mandarin oranges, 1 yogurt, and 5 strawberries and is still asking for more. This is from when he got up at 7am until now (10:48 am). He has also had a sippy cup full of milk and a is working on his 2nd cup of water.

Don't think it is a gender thing.  My 15 month old daughter is the same.  It's a metabolism thing.  Not sure if my daughter has a fast metabolism or just a poor metabolism but she eats more than a teenage boy most days.  If it is healthy food you are serving then serve it.  It is hard for a child this young to over eat.  If he ate 20min ago then try distraction...if he is truly hungry he will keep letting you know.  If he forgets and plays then he may have been bored.

I wouldn't hold back food...as long as it is healthy (like the foods you listed).

  • He is also in no danger of being overweight. He is TINY. Only 20lbs still at almost 2.
It must just be his metabolism. If #3 is this way I will go broke feeding them lol

  • I'd feed him again regardless of the time frame.
  • My son is the same way. He constantly eats. He's a big growing boy though. So I'm not worried.

  • DD is the same way and is only 10th percentile for weight. I don't think it is gender either. I also eat constantly and am not even 100 lbs at 5'4" I have a really difficult time gaining weight, and I think DD is just going to be the same. We just have fast metabolisms. I make sure to not give her anything for an hour or so before her main meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) so that she will eat decently, but otherwise I offer her 2 healthy snacks in between meals and more when she asks (which is often).
My DS is TINY too. He is in the 20th percentile for height and 10th for weight.  Must have lucked out and gotten his metabolism from his daddy.

  • I'm glad someone posted this. I was going to ask the same question. My son is in the 90th percentile for both height and weight and eats like he'll never see food again.

DS is the same way some days. I almost always give him food if it is a healthy snack.  The only time I don't is when he's thrown the banana I gave him and he asks for another banana (or something like that).  If you're kid is active and eating healthy, then I don't think it's something to be concerned about.

My DS Is about 50th percentile for weight/20th for height.
