Please recommend your carrier/wrap

DD is one month. I have the Baby Bjorn from DS but we both hate it. So I need to get something else for wearing her around the house, going to the store, etc. she is a tall baby, if that makes a difference (22" at birth and I would guess she is close to 24" now). I looked online but there are a ton of choices so I am looking for recommendations.

  • We have the Beco Gemini for hiking & love it. We also have the boba wrap for the house & whatever else & love it too! Watch the utube videos for how to wrap it if you get one. My SIL gave us the ergo & we really disliked it.
  • I've used a baby ktan, maya wrap
Ring sling, and ergo. They were all good for different reasons. I've been using my woven wrap more with this baby and it's by far my favorite. I don't know if it's because he's bigger than my daughter was or what, but it's soooo much more comfortable than the other three and really no more trouble to put on.

  • And for ssc I think the boba is supposed to be good for tall babies.

  • I had the ergo but found it too bulky for the newborn stage. I'm 5ft0 though so that may be why. I think the ergo will work better for DH when she's bigger.
Personally, I love the ktan. I bought it when she was 5 weeks and wish I had bought it sooner! So easy to use and comfortable

  • Thank you! I will check out the ktan. I am about 5'7" so pretty average height. DH is 6' but this will definitely be more for me. I will hold into the Bjorn for when she is a bit older but for now it is just not comfortable for either of us.

  • I bought a K'Tan and love it. I tried Moby and Boba, I hated the wrap portion. Too hot and a pain to wrap. Ergo for when she's bigger.
  • I love my ring sling, made it myself for under 15$
  • Beco Gemini for SSC hands down. DH and I are the same heights as you and we have a long DS. He fits perfectly. The only downside is no pocket to hold keys, etc. but it doesn't require a separate infant support as you can adjust the bottom and tops to accomodate a newborn.

I second the ring sling, boba or k'tan for around the house. I find with DS's long legs though he's not as comfortable in the sling hold now and prefers more of a kangaroo so the k'tan works perfectly for us.

  • The bjorn is really not a great carrier for the baby, either. It doesn't really out the baby in a position that's comfortable for them and can out a lot if stress on their crotch, hips, and lower back.

I know. I am now remembering how awkward it was for DS when he was a baby and that it is not a great carrier for those reasons, but that was 8 yrs ago so I had kind of forgotten. I was just happy to have one piece of baby gear I could reuse since everything else was so out of date but looks like I won't really be using that either.

  • Love my K'tan!!

  • I gt a crazy steal on my didy wrap from a friend, so I'm kind of no help. I know some people do make their own, but a big piece of quality fabric isn't cheap, either! The baby wearer website has a fsot section and I think diaper swappers has one for baby wearing, as well. The problem is people get sentimentally attached to them and then act like weirdos about destashing.

  • Are there any pro-wearing/natural parenting stores near you that offer a rental or at least fit you into a carrier with LO so you can try one out?

Hmmm...I can look but I don't think so. I live in more of a chain store - BRU, Target, etc. - area. Nothing but chain restaurants either. :-(

  • We have a local babywearing international chapter here that loans out carriers ($30/year) which is a great way to try new stuff. Look into that in your area?

  • You can totally make your own woven. You need to go to the upolhestey fabric though. Thats where you can find the light butbareingn fabric
  • I love my wrap conversion righ sling, we use the tummy to tummy/chest to chest hold rather than the cradle hold. I've also been using my BabyHawk mai tei recently with legs in. I haven't even pulled out my moby this time around and my ergo I used for when they are older/bigger.

  • Moby for around the house and Ergo for out and about. I will say DS is 10 weeks old now and the Ergo is just now getting easier to use. I think it will be better as he gets bigger.

Right now we're using Ktan and ring slings that I made.  I've got an ergo for when he gets bigger.

  • Boba! (Carrier, not the wrap) I love it. I am tall and large chested and it fits great! My baby is tall and she fits perfectly. If you go this route, it's cheaper to order it on Amazon, especially if you have Amazon Prime.

I got a mei tai from target based on good reviews and really like it. It's super easy to use.!
  • I have a weego for my twins and I love it. They make a single too. It's very well made right from Germany :)
  • I love my sakura bloom ringslings, but they are quite a splurge! I also got a babyhawk mei tai this time and have been using it a lot for longer walks, he also calms faster in it.

DH loves his Beco- SSC without needing a hot infant insert= win!

  • I saw a chicco at babies r us that looks great! I have a k'tan and want to love it but it feels so tight! I don't get how everyone likes it?! Maybe I'm missing something?? LO is not even big 21 inches and 8lbs?
  • It's supposed to be right but maybe you need a larger size. The chicco from what I've heard is no better than the bjorn.

  • I love our beco Gemini. I bought the boba and was really uncomfortable. I'd recommend trying them on before buying!! Everyone has a different preference.

We use a K'tan and an Ergo right now. I like the K'tan for around the house and the Ergo for when we go fishing and other outdoor activities. I plan to get another woven wrap once he's bigger and no longer fits in the K'tan.

  • If anyone is on fb, there is a site called Babywearing on a Budget. I just bought a ring sling on there a few days ago. Hasn't arrived yet. But there are lots of styles and lots of people to get ideas on what is best for you.

  • I love my k'tan! It's so comfy!
  • DH and I both have our own K'Tan and we love them.

  • I got a Balboa sling which LO absolutely loves! I found it practically new at a consignment store. I also ordered a Ergo which is too cute & has a pocket for my keys & phone when we go on walks. However, the Ergo is a bit hot (but I live in warm South Florida).
  • I just bought the Boba, but can not get LO in it! She stands straight up, blocks my view with her head (screaming, of course), and scratches my neck. It's actually kind of hilarious. If I could figure it out, I'm sure we would love it :)

Has anyone heard of the Peanut Shell brand of slings? My aunt bought me one when she heard I wanted to babywear, but I'm not sure it's safe. The fabric just rests on your shoulder, no wrapping around you for support. I'm scared to try it, but also don't want to hurt her feelings by not using it. :-?

  • That style is called a hot sling and yes they're safe (when used correctly of course.)

  • So I just purchased a K'tan Breeze in white for summer/dog walking/etc after looking into it, as so many of you recommended it. It's the same concept as my Moby but a more manageable design with the double loop and separate sash. I can definitely get this on in a parking lot for shopping, the Moby not so much because that shit drags on the ground when getting it wrapped.
