What do you sing to your baby?

I've noticed a lot of people have said they sing to their baby, and I love doing it as well. But... I can never think of anything to sing! I actually sang a Barney song the other day (I love you, you love me, we're a happy family).. Ew! I also started singing "octopuses garden" which he seems to like, but I have to look up the lyrics on my phone haha. What do you guys sing?? I need ideas :)

    Lots of songs from musicals.

Baby Beluga, Hobo's lullabye, a lot of sea chanteys and whaling songs.  Enough that we had to get LO some whale outfits.  I'm an elementary music teacher, I've got a lot!

I've been working on the railroad, London Bridges, She'll be coming 'round the mountain, I'm a little teapot, Sing a song of sixpence, Mary had a little lamb.

I will, In my Life, Goodnight, Long Long Long - Beatles
Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel (I've been meaning to look up lyrics of the Zoo song)
Forever and a day (always)- on Jewel lullaby CD, which is awesome for car rides.

I have practice with DD1.  Sadly, it has not improved my voice at all, but the girls don't seem to mind.

You are my sunshine, itsy bitsy spider, and Ba Ba Black Sheep mostly. I also sing made up songs and any regular song on the radio that is not a kid's song. I figure she doesn't know the difference yet.

  • Twinkle twinkle, this little piggy, row the boat, along with any song on the radio, she loves the back street boys ( played this in car a lot during later stages of pregnancy) London's burning,. I love to sing shame I sound like a dying cat!!!

Why didn't I think to sing Wiggles songs?!? I've been running low on songs also. I sing Doe a Deer, Tuppence (Mary Poppins), songs by Jewel, and I'll admit I've dabbled in some darker Tori Amos (Me and a Gun), as well as some creepy song my dad used to sing to me (Poor Babes in the Woods). I've also belted out some Marley, but switched it to No Baby No Cry. *shrugs*

Same as above...plus Eric Church songs (Mason likes his music) as well as made up songs to popular melodies.
  • We are really big on the Frozen sound track here. Only slightly ashamed to admit I know the whole thing by heart.
  • I'm singing lots of jazz standards, and contemporary stuff, like "My Funny Valentine," "Nature Boy, "Summertime," anything by the Beatles, U2, Sarah McLachlan, Postal Service, Ingrid Michaelson, Regina Spektor, etc.

LO sadly seems to like my speaking voice more so than singing, which makes me kinda sad as a musician! :-(
  • A la Claire Fontaine, au Claire de la lune, Fais do do, une souris verte, le petit navire. DH was born in France and im proficient so we want to teach LO to speak French from a young age.

Anyone remember nick nack paddy wack give the dog a bone? I couldn't remember all the lines so made half of it up. DH had never heard it but was very confused by some of my made up verses.

I also belt out whatever is on the radio.

I came across this the other day. Maybe it'll be useful!  I keep singing Rock-a-bye baby and Hush Little Baby over and over. I also make up my own lyrics as I'm trying to comfort my baby.
  • Don't google nick nack pattiwack...
  • You Are My Sunshine, children's Bible songs and school songs (There Was a Little Turtle, 5 Little Monkeys, color songs, etc.), and hymns.

Mostly I sing songs that I make up on the spot that will never be heard by anyone else! Also sing random ones that come into my head - Waltzing Matilda, Here comes the Sun, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the Rains of Castamere. Lullabies at bedtime (Brahms, Down in the Valley, the tuppence song, Lullaby by Dixie Chicks).
  • Mostly old church songs I grew up with.

You are my sunshine, and a song from I brother where art thou, the siren song.
I sing this to her every night! "Go to sleep you little babe, go to sleep you little babe, your mommas gone away but your daddy's gonna stay, didn't leave nobody but he baby".
The lyrics aren't the most appropriate but the tune is so soothing! I love it!

@Vinny424‌ Seven is also in our rotation! @MadBloom‌ We do A Life That's Good as well! That one took several times through before I could do it without crying a bit (especially "I already have more than I should"). I also sing "For the longest time" by Billy Joel, "the Boxer" simon & garfunkle, and "Sweet baby James" by James Taylor.

I made a bunch of different playlists on spotify that play on our docking station throughout the day, one is silly songs, another Bible songs and one of nursery rhymes and stories. I also have a special "Mommy and Ryker" playlist that I play during our bedtime routine, it has a handful of different lullabies that I sing to him like Beautiful Boy, All the Pretty Little Horses and Godspeed (by Dixie Chicks)
Thank you for reminding me of Godspeed. I'm listening to it now and tearing up!!

    Anything and everything.

    My go to's are
    Hymns
    Mumford & Sons
    Jack Johnson
    Monsters & Men
old Disney (Little Black Rain Cloud, Oodalally, La La Lu to name a few)
Musicals (Problem Like Maria, I Feel Pretty, etc)
    Puff the Magic Dragon

And anything new or popular on the radio.  I have also caught myself singing this during frantic late night cry sessions.

Here Comes the Sun is a popular one around here. So much so that we've taken to calling DD little darling. She loves her some Beatles.

I sing "Day is Done (Taps)" and "Brahms Lullabye" with the words my mom made up for me to DS1 every night. I've sung them a few times when DS2 is fussy and it really calms him, I wonder if he recognizes them from when he did bedtime with me every night while I was pregnant! I also like using Pandora. There's a children's lullabys station and a toddler station. I just thumbs up/down a lot and it's reminded me of a lot of songs I heard as a child. I sing along a lot.

I love that my mom freely changed lyrics she didn't like so I do the same and keep a lot of hers which makes me feel closer to her. e.g. For "You are my sunshine" instead of "please don't take my sunshine away" she always sang, "you are my precious little girl" because the lyrics made her cry for the year before my adoption was finalized. With DS1 in the NICU I found myself choking on the original lyrics as well and switched to my mom's. She also made up a separate verse that is much cheerier...

    The other night, **name**
    When I was sleeping
I dreamt of how we play each day
The songs we sing, the books we read
You are my precious little girl

    much better!
