June 2014 Moms

What's YOUR birth story?

Now that our babies are coming in fast and furious, I'm just curious to know what's YOUR birth story? Is it similar to any of your LOs' birth stories?

I'm a twin and was born at 7 months (not sure how many weeks exactly). I weighed a little over 3lbs and my brother was 4lbs. My LO is already almost 35  weeks and weighed 4.5lbs at 32 weeks, so he will have a completely different story from mine.

We were born in the Caribbean and this was 33 years ago, so we stayed two months in what was their equvialent of their NICU, which I can imagaine was not very advanced at the time. I've always known that I was in an incubator and had to have a blood transfusion (I actually know the nice police officer who donated the blood). My Mom says that we had all kinds of tubes coming out of us. She also says that we could fit into a shoe box. I'm sure it must have been very scary for my parents.

Because of this, I feel a special connection to all our little June preemies. And I know in my heart that they are going to be okay. My brother and I are both pretty healthy and had no complications growing up. I'm 5'9 and he towers over me, so no one could tell by looking at us what we went through coming into this world.

  • this LOs birth story and mine will be exactly the same. scheduled repeat csection at 39 weeks exactly :)
  • I was also a scheduled rcs at about 39 weeks. No one in my family has been able to push a baby out of their lady business and they all have had emergency c/s for the first one and rcs for the following kids. I will be avoiding that and having a c/s at 39 weeks 5 days.

I was 3 days early, and my parents were supposed to have their last birthing class at the birthing center that night. I was actually born within the time the class was going on. My mom said she had a very easy labor and delivery with me, roughly 12 hours start to finish. I was just over 6 pounds.

My parents never found out with either me or my sister what sex we were going to be, so when I was born, my dad had a bad view I guess and said "OMG IT'S A BOY!" and the midwife said "uh, no, that's the cord, look again". My mom said that he was still happy, but he got about the biggest tomboy daughter he could get anyway. And I've pretty much been a daddy's girl my whole life. He and I look practically identical, to the point that someone knew who I was after not seeing me for 16 years (the last time he had seen me I was about 18 months old and I was 18 at the time)

  • I was a RCS at about 39 weeks I think.  My oldest sibling wasn't head down so my mom had a CS with her and then RCS were her only option for future pregnancies.

DD and this baby have both been head down pretty early on thankfully, and I'm hoping to have a vaginal delivery again.

  • When my mom was pregnant with me, my mom started having PTL issues because of contractions at about 7 months, so she had to go on bedrest. 3 days before my due date, the contractions started getting very intense quickly in the middle of the night. After about an hour, she finally told my dad they needed to get to the hospital, which was about 30 minutes away. My dad dropped her off and he went to park. When she got in, they checked her and immediately told her to start pushing. She freaked out, yelling, "but my husband isn't even here yet!". My dad made it in a few minutes later, and then I was born within a couple minutes.

My mom likes to tell me know how quick (or long) her labor was with me -- only about 1.5 hours -- but was really 2 months plus 1.5 hours.

  • My due date was Dec. 18th, my Mom started labor with me on Jan. 4th. I was born around 8 am on Jan. 6th. I aspirated meconium, and my parents claim I had a rat tail due to being so overdue. I feel bad, my Mom must have been miserable.

I was 2 full weeks late, and my mom labored for about 36 hours before they finally did a C-section.   I was 9.5 pounds and healthy.

That's about all I got.  That and all she wanted to eat for the 24 hours before labor were Italian subs!

  • I was overdue and was scheduled to be induced. My mom went into labor the day before and I was born via emergency c-section the day I was scheduled be be induced. They worried about me having inhaled merconium and I ended up spending a little bit of time in an incubator in the nursery. She was put all the way under for the section. I went home with her a few days later.

  • My mom into labor the day before her due date. She had no clue she was in labor and thought she was experiencing food poisoning. The whole family had gone to some questionable seafood restaurant and was sick too.
My grandmother finally convinced my mom to call her doctor who immediately made her come in. My poor dad was at work and the phone's were busy so my grandmother who had never driven a car drove my mom to the hospital. Less than an hour later I arrived.
My due date and the date I was due are the same. So if LO arrives a day early we will share a birthday.

  • @mrsgerman‌, Happy belated birthday!
  • I was a home birth baby, born right on my due date in a little cabin in the middle of an apple orchard. My mom had one midwife present and my dad was in and out (not much help I guess) with the nearest hospital quite a ways away, in retrospect she said that was crazy of them and extremely fortunate that there were no complications.

They were 22 and had no idea really what they were doing(first child). I guess we were all lucky that I was such a cooperative baby :). She labored for 24 hours with the urge to push starting around hour 20, not being fully dilated she had to restrain for 4 hours. My mom said that was the worst 4hrs of her life. It all sounds insane to me, lol, but I guess it was such a peaceful birth that all I did was squeak when the cord was cut and never cried, just looked around as my mom held me on her chest.

Growing up, I remember kids in my class thought it was so weird that I was born at home.

Because of DS #1 birth defect and this one almost being breech, I think I'll stick to the hospital!

I was 10 days late (this started a lifelong trend) and born in the middle of a huge party. The whole block used to put on a Memorial Weekend Pig Roast party with our house and the neighbor's as the epicenter and my mom went into labor with me in the middle of the night on Saturday - I was born about 6 hours later at 10-something am; 6lb, 7oz, 21.5". Rumor has it that my dad was in the waiting room watching cartoons (I'm kid #3 of 4, so apparently NBD by then, lol).

When I was brought home my grandma and aunts were furiously cleaning the house - footprints on the walls, etc, since the party had continued on. My neighborhood nickname growing up was "Miss Piggy" for interrupting the pig roast party. And for ruining the tradition - the next one wasn't until my 18th birthday.

  • I was nine days late, but I made up for it by being a super easy labor.  My mom started feeling light contractions around 11:30 pm.  She took a shower, got her bag ready, did some stuff around the house, took a light nap and headed into the hospital around 3:00 am.  By 3:30 am she was in active labor.  Didn't get the epi because that was the trend in her circle of friends at the time.  I was born at 7:03 after two pushes.  I definitely don't want this guy to be nine days late, but I am praying for an easy labor like she had!

For my brother and sister (twins), my mom had to beg her doctor to give her a c-section three weeks before her due date (she had been on bed rest already for months and since she is a tiny woman to begin with, she was pretty miserable with all that baby inside her!).  The doctor agreed only after my mom promised to never tell anyone that it was an elective c-section, that's how taboo they were back in the day.  Even at three weeks early, both twins were close to seven pounds each, can't imagine how big they would have been if she went to term!

  • I was 3 weeks late. I was due mid-October, so my Mom had a Halloween costume picked out for me, a pumpkin. We have a picture of her with my older brother (who was 1.5 at the time) and the pumpkin costume on her belly. She was eventually induced. I know she got a really bad fever while in labor and I came out with a lot of menocium, so they immediately whisked me away to get me checked out (I think the cord was wrapped around my neck as well and I was also running a fever). When they finally brought me back to her a few hours later, she took off the little outfit I wore so that she could hold me skin to skin and then counted all of my fingers and toes. I was fine, as was she. And even though I was so late, I was only 7 lbs 10 oz.

My mom was induced with me a month early due to toxemia.  I was born within about 8 hours of them arriving at the hospital (her third pregnancy and delivery) and was 8lbs11oz.  I had to go to the NICU because I was early and had jaundice.  My parents say whenever they came down to see me or feed me the nurses had me out playing with me because I was about 3lbs bigger than all the other babies so they liked having me there.  They also couldn't fit me in any incubators because I was so long.

When I came out I had super dark skin and a ton of black hair.  My parents joked that I looked like Juanita, a family friend, but the nurses didn't know they were kidding so they wrote Juanita LastName on my isolette card.

I was born on May 19th too! 5 days past my due date. 1986 here! Happy belated birthday, birthday twin!

My mom waited too long to go to the hospital and by the time she got there, it was too late for an epidural. She wasn't too thrilled about that and still complains about how she had to birth me med-free to this day lol I was 7lbs 10oz. Born at 2:58pm, which was just in time for her to watch General Hospital while I was whisked away to be put under some special light for my jaundice (I have olive skin and still think I'm a bit yellow!).

I was my mom's 3rd pregnancy/delivery and the fastest, but even then, not by much.  Her first was 6 hours, second was 4 hours, and then just under 2 hours with me.  I was also her latest baby, being born exactly on my due date.

Neither of my sisters have had a child born on or past their due date yet either, and the longest labor thus far has only been about 11 hours.  So hopefully this bodes well for me that I won't have a super long labor or go past my due date.
  • On the topic of family birth stories, I asked my mom the other day if her mom ever mentioned anything about her deliveries to her.... (My mom and sister both had pretty good deliveries, but they look exactly alike, and so far my pregnancy has been pretty different from theirs, but I look exactly like my grandma, same build, same health issues, etc. so I figured I'd ask about her).  And all my mother said was "She didn't tell me much....except that the doctor did something to her akin to an "episiotomy gone terribly wrong", even your grandfather could tell you about that."

    What.  The.  Fuck.

SO GLAD I am not delivering in the 40's/50's.  My poor poor grandma :(

I was a scheduled repeat c-section around 39 weeks.  My sister (7 years earlier) was an emergency c-section, cord around her neck, very dramatic (which is fitting).

@Taymiller I come from a family where no blood related ladies have every had a vaginal birth - not even my grandmothers - but I did.  Actually, I only pushed for 20 minutes with DD.  It can happen.  It was discussed a lot with my doctor and in my birth plan that I didn't want to be made to push for 2 hours, only to go into a c/s.  If it was looking like a c/s was imminent, just go for it with my family history, but luckily, that didn't happen.  I was pretty in shock when I was told that not only was pushing working, but she was out in maybe 6-10 pushes

*stuck in box: There are other reasons I am having a c/s, but that is good to know, I will tell my sister that because she is freaked out for when she has kids :)

  • It seems like the majority of these stories involve late babies. I'm surprised, I thought babies are usually a couple days early rather than late!
  • I was the first VBAC done at the hospital where I was born. My mom had a lot of ultrasounds with me because they were only going to attempt it if I was under a certain weight (my sister was almost 9lbs9oz and was a c-section after 36 hours of labor). I was told the doctors had to submit a special request (I'm not sure to whom) to attempt the VBAC.

I was born the day before my due date. The story I've heard is that my mom went into labor on a Sunday morning and my dad stopped to get something to eat at the gas station on the way to the hospital while my mom was contracting in the car! Ha! I was born after only 4 hours of labor but I'm not sure how long my mom pushed. I weighed 8lbs7oz! I'd say my mom deserved an easy labor after what she went through with my sister!

My mom was induced at 36 weeks with me because I have a polycystic kidney, so they wanted me out to run some tests. As far as I know (based on hospital records) it was a smooth delivery.
  • My mom had 10 kids...she says it's all a blur.

What I do know is that my edd was May 23ish and I was born June 1. My mom had us all vaginal without any meds. I weighed 8#8oz. I was her first girl, 4th child.

We are similar in the fact that our first 3 children have been boys. (I'm not having anymore to find out if my 4th would be a girl).

My mom was with me in the delivery room for my second child and she said she thinks it was easier for her to deliver than me.

Oh and she said she only had horrible cramps with me... And I've had horrible cramps with all my kids.

I was born at 41.5 weeks. My mom went in to be induced. They hooked her up to a minimum amount of pitocin and I was born 6-7 hours later without an epi. Actually, both my brother and I were induced and my mom had no epi. She was like "it's NBD". She mostly didn't feel the contractions until later in the birth. I didn't have an epi with my first, so I guess we have genetically high pain tolerance?

Both her labors were short (under 8 hours) and mine was short as well. Yay for genes (sometimes)!

ETA: I had DD at 39 weeks exactly, less than 6 hours after my water broke during sex.

I'm the first born and I was 3 days early, my friend was also the first born and she was 6 days early, another friend I have was born 4 weeks early and he was over 6 pounds at birth. My sister was a week late. So who knows.

  • My mom was laying down after my dad got off work. She felt like she had just peed the bed a little. Ran up stairs and through the kitchen and to the bathroom. Sat to pee and stood up with a monster gush. She yelled for my dad who ran up stairs and skipped in the kitchen slamming into the stove leaving a hudge dent. My mom asked him... You ready to be a dad?
After 36 hours of labor and only 2 cm they took me c section. It was her due date when water broke the day after when I was born.

I was enduced at 36 weeks due to severe pre e. labored for 24 hours and only got to a 2 as well. We were both in distress and had an emergency c section that ended up with general anesthesia.

    All at the same hospital.
  • My mom had severe pre-eclampsia at 26 weeks and was in the hospital on bed rest. At 28 weeks she kept telling the nurse she didn't feel right and asked to be checked. The nurse kept ignoring her and when she was finally checked my foot was sticking out. She was wheeled in for an emergency c section and the drs asked my grandmother if they had to choose one of us to save, who should it be. I was not breathing when delivered and they spent several minutes resuscitating me. Weighed 3lbs and 13 in long. A week later I was down to 2 lbs. It was a horrible recovery for my mom and we both nearly died. I was in the nicu for months. Born with hip dysplasia and a cleft palate. Went through years of therapy as a kid and drs were convinced I had down syndrome (looking at my baby pictures I can see why) and/or developmental delays so I was put into early child development classes when I was 3. Can now say I don't have any *major* health issues, my growth wasn't stunted, and I'm a healthy functional adult. My mom went on to have 2 more kids, though she could never carry a pregnancy to term. I have made it to 37 weeks already so I am so thankful I have not had to go through what she did to have children! :)

    *Possible trigger warning*

My mom had nightmare like birth experiences so I will try not to be to detailed. I was a rainbow baby that took five years to conceive. My mom was being heavily monitored, at 37 or 38 weeks at an appointment they did a few test contractions ( I don't really understand this part) and the contractions were causing my heart to stop so I was delivered by c-section the next day, which happened to be my dad's birthday. She was supposed to be the first c-section but kept getting delayed due to other emergency c-sections coming in. During the c-section the pain meds wore off and my mom went into shock but fortunately some quick thinking nurses and doctors were able to intervene. I went to the nursery with my grandma until my mom was better. My younger sister was also a rainbow baby and came four weeks early, RCS after labor started.

My experiences have very fortunately not been similar. Knock on wood really hard. My mom has more strength than anyone I know because of the things she survived.

  • My mom had me when she was 36 weeks. She had me naturally and was only in labour for about 3 hours or so. I was born at 11:30am and was 6lbs (not sure how many ounces). After being checked by doctors and nurses they deemed that I was perfectly healthy. We stayed for the night and then left the next morning.

Same here, though not in the Carribbean! My brother and I were born early. He was in the nicu for much longer. I just needed to gain weight, and it took me a month to do so. My brother, on the other hand (always the trouble maker :) had pnemonia, jaundice, issues breathing. My mom told me that my uncle got privelages at the hospital so he could keep tabs on us, but it must have been stressful. I wasn't such a newborn when I came home, so this LO is even more exciting for my family.

My sister's kids were all born earlier, so I think I've already gone the longest.

Being with my LO rocks! DD born 6/13/14.

  • I'm the oldest in my family and I was three weeks early. All of my siblings were that early as well.

My Mom said she just felt "really uncomfortable" the day before I was born. Eventually it got worse that night so she went to the hospital. The nurses told her to go home because she couldn't possibly be in labor. She came back an hour or so later and I was born after a few pushes. Apparently my Mom wanted an epidural but was told, "Oh honey, it's too late for that. It's time to push."

My daughter was born a few days early following a very favorable induction. We were moving and we couldn't wait.
