Could it be twins??

Ok... let me start off by saying, I know it's still super early. So far this pregnancy has been completely different than my first. I know it sounds crazy, but I knew that I was pregnant almost instantly this time. I just felt pregnant after the next day or two. I know they say that's not possible, but apparently it is. My boobs are so sore and feel like they weigh a hundred pounds every time I take my bra off. Plus I was getting severe headaches and some mild cramping before I was even due for regular PMS symptoms. Plus, I am hungry all the time!!! None of this happened with my first pregnancy. I got my first positive 5 days before my period was due and have gotten two other positives (on different days) since then. My doctor won't see me until 8-10 weeks. :( Anyways, I just have this feeling like it could be twins. My mom's cousin had fraternal twins but that's the only family history I am aware of. What do you guys think? Could it be twins or just really extreme super early pregnancy symptoms? P.S. I am also having trouble fastening my pants already, but that could just be because I am hungry all the time! HAHA!

  • I have all the exact same symptoms with a very early positive and I only have 1 bun in the oven. Symptoms do not indicate the number of babies you are having. Also just an fyi, twins run on the father's side, not the mother's, so your distant cousin having twins doesn't affect you.

I agree with PP. You can't tell if you are having twins from what you have stated. You might have twins, you might not have twins.

My mother and grandmother had twins.(as well as many of my relatives) They did not have really bad symptoms with their twin pregnancy when compared to their other pregnancies. I am sure it will be different for everyone.

Edit Bloating is common in early pregnancy and that can make it difficult to fasten your pants. It can also be pretty uncomfortable. You can leave them undone, you can also buy an extender or use an elastic band to extend them. I found the bloating did go down and my pants fit better again for a while.

I also had symptoms really early before the test showed positive and was wondering this too. I Googled it and there are some articles that suggest that strong symptoms early or extreme nausea can be a sign of twins. It also said a lot of people "just knew" they were having twins. I do strongly believe in mothers intuition so anything is possible. However, of course the only way to know for sure is with an US but its fun to speculate what you may be having early in the pregnancy! I hope you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby or babies! :)

See the problem with this reasoning is that there is no proof of causation, only faulty anecdotal correlation. I have yet to see a study that has proven symptoms can indicate a twin pregnancy. Just because it happens in some twin pregnancies doesn't mean it happens in all (or even most) of them. Some women have few symptoms and some have lots...it happens all the time with singletons and multiples. There is no link.

As for intuition, the people who say it is reliable are the ones who were "right"...you don't hear a lot of crowing about intuition's validity from all the ones who were wrong. Multiples are automatically classified high risk for a number of reasons so I fail to see how it is fun to speculate...terrifying, maybe. But not fun.

  • I got my BFP 4 days before my missed period, and was exhausted and had slight nausea almost immediately. The cause for my "early pregnancy symptoms" (and for yours) was likely increased progesterone. Progesterone levels go up after ovulation, regardless of whether or not you get pregnant, and that can cause you to feel a little lousy even when you're not pregnant. That's part of the reason that some PMS symptoms can mimic pregnancy symptoms (bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, etc.) So in hindsight, a mom who is pregnant might think that her "early symptoms" were due to pregnancy, when in reality, there's a good chance that she would've had the same symptoms even if she weren't pregnant. When I was charting while we were trying to conceive our first, there were several months where I noted on my chart that I had nausea and fatigue a few days before my period was due, and I wasn't pregnant those months. It's easy to look back and say "see? I knew I was pregnant! I had nausea and other early pregnancy symptoms" after you find out you are pregnant and then just ignore all the months where you felt crappy right before your period came and the symptoms obviously weren't due to pregnancy.

Seems like a lot of you are really quick to snap at this woman and make her feel stupid for asking a question. I thought the forums were supposed to allow women to express thoughts/fears throughout the pregnancy journey??
@kjkarats03 I did say the study suggests there is a link not that it proves the woman is having twins. Also, I have known many women who have had multiples and consider it a blessing not terrifying!!

I'm probably going to regret it, but I've gotta ask, @acorlew7‌ ‌-- the next day or two after what?
Obviously she's more in touch with her body than even science can explain and felt pregnant merely a day or two after the sperm and the egg merged.

Do you have links to these "studies"?

@kjkarats03 you are correct I did interchange the word article and study. I read articles. My point in posting the reply was to show her that other people have asked that question/had those thoughts and there were articles written about it. Pregnancy can make you go crazy wondering if what you are experiencing is normal, if it could be multiples, if something is wrong?! There are a million of questions/worries that go through a pregnant woman's mind and sometimes it helps to know that you're not the only one who has felt that way or wondered. Its not worth going back and forth about. Hopefully everyone on here is having a healthy pregnancy and has a great day! :)

  • Twins run on both my side and my husbands side. I hope we never have any lol. I'm more hungry and have stronger & different pregnancy symptoms this time than what I did last time. I wouldn't assume it's because I'm having twins though. I think it's just true that every pregnancy is different. & also heads up, I wouldn't come on here to talk about any weird thoughts or feelings you have. Because as you can see they went on & started a debate about who can and can't have twins, I guess it's a "genetic debate" they got going on lmao! And then the overly sarcastic until the point it's kind of rude comments is also a buzz kill. It's more fun to talk about strange things like this with a close friend or family members that can just laugh with you and not at you, and be curious with you too :) You know? But make sure you update when you find out what your having :D I'm curious to know.

why anyone would want twins is beyond me- the idea of it scares the living shit out of me.

Everyone loves a two for one deal...

Honestly though, 2 babies doesn't scare me, but a twin pregnancy does...so many have complications.
  • twins at this point would put at us 3 kids.   Making us outnumbered and have to pay for 3 in daycare or me quit my job.  No thanks.

Sorry, totally forgot most of you are American.....guess it's just a twofer in Canada....until they're a year old, then double daycare.
  • I can't believe how mean and downright rude some of you women are.  I know we all have google at our fingertips but honestly, what if she just wanted some support from other pregnant women? This forum should be a place to share stories and learn from each other, and from the short time I've been on the site, I've seen so many snarky comments from women who are OBVIOUSLY experts at pregnancy and everyone else should bow down at their feet.  It really is just sickening.
  • you guys are just making my point. I really hope your children don't inherit your attitudes towards others.

  • Idk why but this annoys me. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. No one can tell you until you get an u/s. Increased m/s and "feeling pregnant" doesn't mean that there's more than one baby.

I'm actually pregnant with twins and was convinced that it was just one in there until my u/s said otherwise. Didn't have bad m/s until this weekend and am tired, but nothing exactly to indicate twins, other than the fact that there are two heartbeats fluttering away.

  • I had this exact feeling before I saw my doctor. My blood work even came back at 34,500 when it was supposed to be between 18- 7,000. But there's only one little baby in there! I doubt you're having twins, but it's always possible.
