STM: does your LO "get it"?

I was starting to think that DS was in denial that he is getting a baby brother but last night I pointed to my stomach and he said "baby!" I then asked him what our baby's name is and he told me. So maybe he understands that there is a baby in there but he doesn't understand that a baby is coming to live with us, ha. So do you think your LO gets it?

My 5 yo DD definitely gets it. She named DD #2 Baby Ella (not the name we are going to use, i hope) not too long after we told our kids. 3 yo DS...he gets it mostly but I dont think he has a clue that someone else will be living with us.

DS understands that I have a baby in my belly and he's having a brother but I'm sure he has no clue this means that a baby is coming who will never leave.

  • He definitely gets that the baby is in there, and when someone asks about his family, he includes her. I'm sure he has no idea the practical idea of how his life is gonna change with a second kid in the house, but I don't expect that to sign in until after

Yep, she knows her baby brother is in Mommy's tummy. We tell her that soon he will be coming out to live with us. A few days ago she told me while we were reading bedtime stories that she wanted him to come out and sit on my lap with her. She likes to poke my belly button and say hi to him.
  • DD knows I am having a baby, that is is in my belly and that it is a boy. She calls him Bubba.

He knows he is going to be a big brother and that baby sister is in Mommy's tummy. After that, I don't think he understands. A lot of his friends have baby siblings, so I think that helps. But I don't really know how much he understands.

  • Dd knows bubbas bed and reminds me the crib is the baby bed. Other than that I don't think she comprehends

It's cute that she named her! That made me remember a story about a family we knew who was expecting their third and the soon-to-be middle child was less than thrilled so she named the baby "Trashcan". She was really young but the Trashcan thing really stuck in her mind and she used it throughout the whole pregnancy. The parents tried everything but they couldn't get the her to come around until after the new baby was born.

So even if you don't actually use Ella, it's way better than Trashcan!

  • Same as others with kids of a similar age. My LO knows there's a baby in Mama's tummy and that he is going to have a little brother, and I think on some level he does understand that things are about to change a lot.

  • Yep. Well mine are a bit older. #1 started you tubing animal births and then my 4 to came in and said she saw a giraffe have a baby out of its butt.

You tube has since been deleted from her iPad. Whoops bad parenting.

  • My 7 year old is excited, but insists that we name the baby Sophia — so she cram be Princess Sophia the first. *eye roll* We've decided on Amelia.

My 15 month old, I still don't think he understands. I try to talk about babies and pat my tummy, even try to get him to feel her kicking, but he doesn't care.

DD has no clue. We try to tell her that there's a baby in my tummy, but she just stares blankly and goes on playing. She still tries to climb and stand on my stomach.

  • Mine is almost five. And totally gets it. He knoes the babys name and calls her by it, also asks when shes going to come put and play. He knows shes coming to stayx especially seeing her room and stuff
  • DS is 7 so he gets it. He's excited to have someone to play with and to help him understand how babies are in the beginning he's taking a sibling class and he'll get to tour the hospital and will get to see a newborn in the nursery.

On a funny note, one day after school i mentioned i didn't feel well. DS got really excited and told me "that means the E is coming really soon!" He got disappointed when I told him she has 3 or 4 more months.

Earlier today DS kept climbing all over me while saying that he wanted to squish baby brother.  Then he put a cone (a small orange traffic cone) up to my belly to listen and said "Baby brother is going to yell at me for squishing him."  So apparently the older one tries to wrestle the younger one when he's not even out yet.

  • Nope.  DS is almost 2 and he likes to point to my belly, sometimes rubs it, sometimes points to it and says "Yuck."  Good times.

  • My dd is 3 and understands that she is going to have another brother. We talk it about more since and whenever the she's sitting on my lap and he kicks she tells him to stop kicking her.
I don't think my 15 month old gets it. He has seen me go through clothes and but I haven't talked to him about it. I should since he has major attachment issues and in the next few weeks he is getting a new room to share with his brother.

No but my DS is 14 months so I don't think he will even get it once the baby is here.  :)
  • No, he's 19 months and has no idea. If I point to my belly and say give baby brother a kiss he will kiss my stomach. I talk to him about the baby, and he has felt baby kick a few times, but he doesn't seem to care.

  • My little one will point at my belly and say "there's a baby in there", but I don't think he really understands what that means. Sometime he will even yell at my belly, "Baby, get out. Get out, baby".. so no.

    Anniversary

  • I haven't even attempted to explain it to my 15 month old. I plan on putting the swing and baby seat out a month in advance so that he gets used to them being there without trying to climb in them when the baby is in them. I don't think he would even begin to understand. He just enjoys flopping on my tummy right now. He'll never remember a life of being a single child.

  • DS is 3, and he gets it.  He "helped" paint the nursery, and knows he has to be careful of mommy's belly.  He will point to my belly and call the baby by its name.

  • My DS is 3.5y and he gets it. He understands that we will have a new baby in our family and he knows where she will sleep, and has helped pick out a security blanket and other items for her. A lot of his friends at school have been through this so he knows that an actual baby is coming. The only thing I don't think he truly comprehends is how it will affect him and how much a baby will change all our lives for a bit.

She also likes to rub cocoa butter on her belly and mine.  She knows what a baby is, but I don't think she gets that there will be a baby at our house in the near future.

  • No. I thought he did for awhile because he would point to my belly and say "baby." But then I realized he didn't when he pointed at his own belly and said "baby."
My DS does this too. He has no clue.

Nope! She points to belly and says baby but does it to her own belly and everyone else's too. I wish she realized though bc she is constantly all over my bump and squishing her brother! Poor kid....he never had a chance! lol

I think DS gets it, we have brought him to two ultrasounds now and at the last one (3d) as soon as he saw the baby on the TV, he said "Awww, that's my friend!" He has been talking about his little brother quite a bit more now and we discuss all the things he will help us with when he is a big brother. I know it will be a major life change for him but he seems like he will transition well.

Stella totally gets it. She had been asking for a baby sister for months before we started trying. She's is definitely excited about being a sister and loves baby already. We haven't told her the sex yet though.

  • no, but he's only 15 months, so i wouldn't expect him to. we do have a book getting a baby brother that he likes to read occasionally, and we change all the names in it to their names, so . . . maybe when it actually happens he'll have a clue? but i doubt it.

he does enjoy drumming on my belly though. :)
