November 2014 Moms

And another random...

I forgot about the squeeze bottle and gigantic undies that they give you in L&D.
So my tips to you girls, use the mesh panties. Love your squeeze bottle, bring your own roll of toilet paper especially after delivery,
Your own comfy blanket, and socks!

Re: And another random...

  • I loved my squirt bottle. I am making a mommy/baby blanket once I know the sex. That is a must have. However, the toilet paper is a BRILLIANT idea.

  • YES!!!  The mesh panties are amazeballs.  For reals.  And the squirt bottle too.

  • Just be careful with the panties and the cost of them.  At the hospital I gave birth at, I was charge for each "care package" that was opened.  There were quite a few panties in it though!

Take everything you can home from the hospital. However, I will say that I used Depends after my DD's delivery and my loss and it was FANTASTIC!  Also- loved the squirt bottle, Tucks pads and Always Infinity Overnight pads are pretty freaking wonderful as well :)

I had girlfriends who totally teased me for using depends! They were soooo much comfier than bulky pads!

Oh and the ice packs!!! Steal as many as you can!! They saved me!

  • I always forgot to put warm enough water in that squirt bottle. It was like a freeze ray on my crouch. @-)
Aaaaand here I was getting super excited about a free water bottle, the kind I drink from with my mouth not my vag. I even told DH "honey, we need to bring our own good tp, but holy shit I get free panties and a water bottle."
    DOHHHH!
LOL!!! I just lost it! Thank you for a good laugh today.

I also brought my own pillow :D nothing like having your own pillow. Their pillows SUCK.

Also, I love living in Canada because I wasn't ever charged for anything I took home. If you requested a private room, you paid $43 a night here. And our insurance covered that :D oh, and get a private room!!

You Canadians make me jealous, not gonna lie. DEFINITELY going to a hospital with private rooms only! Pillow tip is good too, thanks!

  • Any other FTMs like me just have an "oh shit" moment? This is the stuff I a) don't know about and b) am terrified about! Ahh!

This post almost led me to a panic attack. I was so unaware. I kinda wanna ask for more advice but scared of the responses...
    :-S
  • My squeeze bottle musing above was my version of Oh Shit. Yes, I'm disturbed now.

    No panic attacks!!

I've had four live births, and I loved having the mirror for each of them!!

    Ask away!

  • I have to say that I was really anxious about giving birth and as my due date came it got worse. I kept hearing all these horror stories about inductions and pitocin, then I went 10 days over and had to be induced. When it was all said and done I was like, huh, that's it? So no worries ladies! :)

  • @TXSparky - Thanks! I'll have to bookmark that and ask my MW on Tuesday. I could text her, but she's had FOUR LADIES give birth today, and one baby that had problems with temperature regulation. I think I'll let her have a break.

Chapstick is an important thing to have if you labor at the hospital, because if you end up on oxygen, your lips will dry out super quick! Also, well, hospitals tend to have drier air anyway.

I plan on recording my entire Labor and Delivery with this baby, especially if my husband is going to be away. I want him to be able to see how it happened. You may want a camera and have someone take pictures and then decide whether or not you want to see, as well.

Mirror? ( like to watch?) I didn't know that was an option.

Also how long to wait before having sex again? Was it (excuse the analogy) like a hotdog in a hallway? Do kegals actually help?

What other goodies can you get from a hospital? What should I ask my hospital (or at my first ob) appointment?

Sorry I really have no one else to ask these things to. I am the first of my friends to have kids and my mom and I don't talk.

You're told to wait 6 weeks before having sex again. I definitely felt tight when we did the deed for the first time, and my SIL was just saying "next time I'm not asking for an extra stitch!!" Haha! But it really depends in your body. And yes, they do help.

You'll get diapers, and aspirator, mesh panties, a peri bottle... And basically you can take anything that is left in your room that try won't use on another patient because of sanitary reasons. If you have a nice nurse ask her what you can take.

For those of you with bowel issues--insist on stool softeners right away.  I waited too long and ended up with an impaction.  Let's just say clearing it was so much worse than labor.

And I eleventh the mesh panties!
    (Let's hope I quoted correctly!)
Pooping after my c-section was scarier than birth was despite an emergency c-section, stool softeners are a must!!

I do worry about having a c section because I know the hospital keeps you longer, you can't stand up with the baby (?), and you have to take really good care of the incision. I would actually really appreciate if c section mamas would give the details of their experiences, the pros and cons, either in this thread or another

Ask away! I had a planned c/s because my son was breech and an external version didn't work, and he had really bad cord placement. I only stayed 3 days in the hospital, a day longer than normal. I don't remember them telling me not to stand with the baby, but it didn't want to do a whole lot of standing. I was walking about three hours after me section, and the recovery wasn't so bad. I couldn't do stairs for two weeks, and couldn't lift anything weighing more than the baby for at least 6 weeks. I started doing light house stuff (dishes and laundry) a week later.

Warning : long post... I had an unplanned c-section. I was one week over my due date, so was induced. Pitocin was started at 8a and I was fully dilated by 8p. Labored for about half hour but my son's heart rate kept dropping so they did a c-section to avoid further complications. I was in the hospital 4 nights, which is standard for c-section (vs. 2 days for vaginal birth). I was pretty out of it after the surgery, prob due to a combination of being exhausted and the anesthesia. I still remember being afraid to carry my newborn thinking (while in bed!) I would drop him. I do regret not being able to hold my son tight that first night. He spent the night in the nursery as I couldn't stay awake. The next morning, the nurse encouraged me to get up and walk a few steps which wasn't too bad as I was on some heavy pain medication. I think they removed the staples around the incision around 48 hours post-op (could be been 72 hours but I don't remember exactly). I showered for the first time on day 3 I think which wasn't too bad. It was very hard moving around but manageable. They tell you not to touch the incision area but rather to just let soapy water run over it to keep it clean. I was shocked by the amount of bleeding and the fact that it lasted for several several days (I think 1 week+). Was heavier than my heaviest period day. Thank god for the hospital mesh panties and 6"x12" commercial grade pads. It took about 5-6 days post- op before I could tolerate the pain without pain meds. Couldn't hold anything heavier than the baby for about. 1.5-2 weeks. Happy to answer any questions. I will likely be having a scheduled c -section this time around.
  • Omg I loved the mesh undies so much! I still have my squirt bottle too. I wouldn't have survived going to the bathroom post c-section without it!

  • So no stairs after a csection? Is this just minimize stairs or really no stairs? (My bedroom is on the top floor) I will be attempting a medicated vaginal birth but freaking out at the size of DH's head now and as a child.
  • The underwear are like mesh boy shorts. They're actually really comfortable, they kept my pd in place well and they were disposable so if I got blood on them it didn't matter.
