BM storage while traveling question

I'm going away for a weekend without DD and want to save the milk that I pump. I was thinking it would be easiest to pour all of one days milk into one container since I do not have enough pump bottles and don't want to mess around with measuring for storage bags. Is there anything special about pump bottles? Can I just get a could Nalgene BPA free water bottles and store in those? Or does anyone else have a better idea?

  • What @casey78 said.

Because I am crazy cakes OCD, I would also probably play around with the bottle a few days before traveling. Like tighten it and make doubly sure if I store liquid in it sideways that it doesn't leak. I know Nalgene is reputable and I've used their bottles for years but I am just extra crazy when it comes to my breastmilk.

  • I travelled for 2 days with cold milk, just kept it in cooler bags and in the hotel mini fridge. They didn't open it up at security (thank goodness) but they did open up the cooler bags and look at the bottles.

  • Thank you. I will use it either use the Nalgene bottles or the storage bags. How do you wash stuff in the hotel? I am usually really obsessive about that and use a clean bowl and super hot water with soap. I just always feel like hotels are dirty.

I just stored it in the milk storage bags.  I double bagged them in case of any leaks and then surrounded them with bags of ice for the flight home.  I told security which bag they were in and they didn't look at them at all.

My hotel had a microwave, so I took one of the medela sterilizer bags along and sterilized the pump parts and bottles.
  • Thanks everyone! This is very helpful.

  • Ditto re: traveling through security. I've noticed if you say (maybe just a touch loudly), "I have a cooler full of breast milk," the TSA dudes don't even want to deal with it ;-)

Also, I don't bother freezing my milk when I travel, I just keep it cold, and either use or freeze when I get back. If the hotel fridge is inadequate, you can also put it on ice in the fridge. Just use the ice bucket.
