Passing along knowledge

I had a dentist appt this morning so had a sitter stay with my son. She's 20 and in college and fabulous! So she was asking me questions when I got home about finding out about this baby and telling H. I told her I tested very early after ovulation since I had dental work to e done that day and was pregnant. This lead to her asking about how pregnancy tests really work and how long it takes for hormones to build up in your body.

I was able to share the things I learned through these boards, mostly lurking on TTGP, about when ovulation actually occurs, how it's different cycle to cycle, basil body temp and such. I suggested she read Taking Charge of Your Fertility for extra information for the future. She's in no way interested in having a baby right now, but she said it was interesting how much they don't teach you in school.

  • It's true they really don't teach much in school...even college.  Basically all I knew is that if you missed a period, you were pregnant.  I didn't realize that you had to have sex during ovulation for best results or that temperature had anything to do with it all.  I guess you really don't pay much attention to trying to conceive and the process of it all until you are in fact actively trying for a baby.  I also didn't realize how easily some women get pregnant versus others having such a hard time until I was older and could understand that some women just have issues with TTGP... That's not something that they teach during sex education either.
  • I had no idea about any of this stuff either until trying for baby 2 and I stumbled across the TTGP board.

  • I guess I learned from Mean Girls...."Don't have sex, you will get pregnant, and die."  All the birth control I needed ;) ( I was also 11 when the movie came out.)
  • I was also amazed and a little embarrassed to learn that there are only 3-5 max fertile days per cycle. I totally thought that each time you had sex from one period to the next was a separate and equal chance to get pregnant. And TTGP meant having as much sex as you could, all cycle long. Eventually your period would be late and BINGO! But I did know about eggs & ovaries and Fallopian tubes, etc. I just assumed the egg hung out and waited all month.

Anyone else feel really old now? :'(

@funnibunni80:  Yes, I think I was in my 20's when that movie came out.  I'm 34 now...so anyone who knows the year it came out can do the math.  Too lazy to look it up.

When we decided to TTC#1 back in 2009 I started by looking up all the info I could about TTC.  I read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and found out about charting and ovulation tests.  That is my personality, research the heck out of everything!

I never really knew about how you can only get pregnant a few days each cycle.  I also didn't realize that EWCM was important.  I just found it really annoying and when I was younger I thought something was wrong with me.  Why am I getting all this annoying discharge?  Then when I learned the reason for it, I wondered why they don't teach girls this stuff.

ETA: Mean Girls came out in 2004, so I don't feel that old anymore, I just think BabyM is young!

It's amazing how much people don't know about pregnancy and birth. It's like they bought into the story that a stork delivered them.
WHAT?! You mean a stork didn't bring me?! image
    Thinking the same thing!
Explains the extra pounds I've put on, though!

I don't remember where I learned about ovulation, but I have friends that are having trouble TTC.  I learned a lot from them.  When we decided to try, I looked up all sorts of stats about how long it might take and the % chance that it would happen each month.
Due to the fact that I was almost 30 I freaked out a little bit and was convinced it would take a minimum of 6 months if we were lucky.

DH was shocked when it happened sooner.  I had him so convinced that it would be almost impossible to get KU in less than 6 months to a year.
