August 2013 Moms

I don't want to jinx it, but... (sleep related)

The day after Easter DD2's sleep went to total shit. Like, wouldn't sleep longer than 45 minutes- maybe an hour- unless someone was holding her. I initially thought it was from the overwhelming weekend but it continued. Every night. Nothing helped- the sleep suit, sleeping on her tummy, the swing, in bed with me, OTC meds for teething. Nothing. She'd only sleep if held.

DH and I started splitting the nights. We really didn't know what else to do. I went to bed when DD1 did and he stayed up with DD2 until 2am. Then I'd take over. I usually went back to bed to catch another hour or two after he got up to get ready for work.

Despite our game plan I was starting to reach my breaking point. I was tired of being up all night, tired of listening to whining pretty much 24 hours a day, and was starting to think about not going on vacation with her. Even DD1 was getting sick of it. DD1 has been AH-MAZING since the day DD2 was born- but between DD2 being miserable all day and the misery and lack of sleep wearing on me DD2 was starting to act out as well.

Then over the weekend it finally started to improve. She'd go a few hours on her own. Then Monday night she slept from 6:30-2am, was up for an hour and then slept until 7am. I actually got up at midnight to make sure she was breathing. Last night she slept from 7:30-5:30. That's like- all night long!

She's now butt scooting- in an even more bizarre manner than her sister's version- and can pull herself up on the ottoman.

Hopefully we can call that the 9 month wakeful and we won't be reliving all that this month.

    Yay!! Must feel great!!!

I'm hoping that day comes soon for us. Night can be awful and there are still many nights of 3-4 hours of sleep. But the really tough thing is she likes early mornings...like no sleeping later than 5:30.

But the last 2 nights have "improved". Monday night...she slept from 6:45 to 1...nursed and was back down til 5:30. Last night started similarly...but after the 1:00ish feeding, she was up within 45 of me putting her down. We did this dance til 5:45 when she wouldn't go back to sleep for anything.

I have hope we'll get your luck soon enough!!

  • DD1 never slept much more than 3 hours at a time until she was over a year, but whenever things got worse the swing or sleeping with me helped.

DD2, at one point in her life, slept 12 hours straight through the night. That only lasted a month or so, but even then she only got up once or twice and was easy to put back down. She's always been easier/more relaxed and it made the past 4 weeks so much more difficult. Based on my experiences, anyway.

I hope things get better. M is such a struggle some days. We want a 2nd close in she to him, but holding him at 3am while he refuses to settle/whining/all that makes a 2nd look very unappealing.

I hope everything is on the upswing for you!
  • Yay! That's great! I hope it continues for you. We had that happen after the 4-month-wakeful too. It was like a month of hell and then literally one day, he went all night. It lasted 3 weeks and now he's all over the map, though still only wakes 1-2x per night max. Now if only the other one would sleep past 530am... :-)
  • That's awesome!!
