  • It was DH's decision to circumcise our son because he himself has been circumcised. However, DS did have some problems healing (his skin grew over the plastibell and needed to have it removed with a scalpel. It was horrendous for us both, but if you ask DH, it was "not as big a deal" as I keep making it out to be. Either way, if this LO turns out to be a boy, he will be circumcised, however, he will not be circumcised using the plastibell method. There is no way I am going through that again.

Why did she leave again? Is she studying for her doctorate or something?

Nope, still commenting in other threads. See placenta thread.

  • @rosebean - Do they give you an option at the hospital or do you specifically have to ask them not to use the plastibell? We're team green leaning towards circ but I think I'd prefer to not use that method.

At my hospital they told us that if your pediatrician will come in and do it then you can specify which procedure however if they won't come to the hospital then it's doctors choice. The older nurses like the plastibell procedure though.

I don'tknow which was used on DS but he ddidn'thave anything left on him when they brought him back...

  • I'm late to the partay, but we did not circumcise DS. I guess I'll never know if we made the "right" decision or not, but it seemed right at the time (and after researching the topic). OP probably isn't reading this anymore, but if you are...the reason we chose not to was that I decided if I couldn't find overwhelming evidence that it was better to circ then I wouldn't. I didn't want to do it just because it's most commonly done or seen as a standard practice. Right now he's 3.5y and so far so good.

  • We had never really thought about it much before since we have girls, and it seemed like getting a boy circumcised is just what you do. Now that we are expecting a boy, my husband and I discussed it and did research, but ultimately, I let him have the final word because he would understand boy stuff better than I would.
We decided not to do it because 1) we aren't religious. 2) removing part of the penis decreases sensation. 3) While there are reports that they are at greater risk of infection or UTIs, it didn't seem too significant as long as you keep them clean and teach them how to clean themselves properly (which should be taught to them even if they aren't circumcised).
We also asked some of our friends with sons what they found to be benefits or negatives as we know some who circumcised and some who didn't. I have found several men who wished they hadn't been circumcised. It was also brought up that there was no reason to subject him to a painful procedure that isn't medically necessary. We wouldn't do that to our daughters, so why do it to our son? Plus, when he becomes an adult and decides he wants to be circumcised, he could do that whereas he couldn't go the other way.
I am seeing more and more people are deciding not to circumcise, so i don't think your son would be considered weird if he was different. But it did take a lot of time and a lot of discussion and research into pros and cons of both. It really is a personal decision, but it never hurts to hear from someone else on what helped them come to their decision.
  • When my brother was born my parents decided not have him circumcised.  Well he ended up with multiple infections due to not being able to keep it clean (at a certain point you have to pull back the skin and clean it, I really don't know how often).  Anyway my parents had him circumcised at about 7 years old and I wouldn't wish that on any little boy he was miserable.  We decided to have my son circumcised just so we wouldn't have to risk this outcome.

  • Okay. I want to be very clear that I wasn't insinuating the two were the same thing. I meant that if the same discussion were happening with girls in that people weren't sure to do it or not because of the same reasons given for boys, we (my family) wouldn't do it. I am not talking about genital mutilation for the sake of genital mutilation. It was a hypothetical situation. I'm sorry I wasn't as clear on that as I meant to be.
  • @kcatboston we were given a number to call and we booked the surgery outside of the hospital for several weeks later. I talked to my mom who happens to have a client that specializes in circs and he assured her that he does not use plastibell method. So we are going to go with him the next time. @lookame3639 if your son came back without anything on, they did not use the plastibell method. The plastibell remains on until it falls off 10-14 days later. And that was our problem. Dang thing wouldn't fall off and was attached in some places.. ugh...

  • @rosebean yikes! I'm glad they didn't use the plastibell on DS that sounds like a terrible ordeal for everyone involved.

Okay, so now that I'm all caught up, and I'm over this "curcumcision" talk, I thought I'd come up with a new list of things we can talk about:

    1. Maternity bathing suits?  Bikini or no?
    2. My baby isn't kicking right this second...I'm scurred.
    3. I'm gaining weight...oh no!
    4. Should I change my girls' names to Madysen and MicKynzy?
    5. I still don't think the ultrasound tech was right

Any of the above sound new and refreshing, ladies?!
Re #5: I can see clearly from the side/profile photos in your siggy that the u/s was WRONG. Congrats on your boys!

Also: Curcumcision sounds like it should have something to do with cucumbers.

  • #4 - Absolutley. The more "y"s the better. MicKynzy pretty much guarantees a doctorate.
  • I've skipped from the beginning of page 4 (where I left off at lunch) to ask why the Master Degree toting OP still hasn't edited the tile of this post. It's driving my BSC!

  • As a geriatric RN, I see plenty of benefits to circumcision. Every single nasty penis complication I saw was either directly caused or exacerbated by foreskin. Not ONE circumcised man with derm issues down there. My poor geries! They are the reason we are choosing circumcision. Even if you decide not to, no big deal. Most of their lives it won't make a tangible difference anyway.
  • I left this up to my husband to decide with some input from me. We are not going to circumcise. We can't imagine putting our little boy through that pain and plus I know people who are not circumcised and they say its not an issue at all regarding hygiene or feeling different.
  • Considering there are approx 120 deaths in the US every year caused by this procedure (not to mention the thousands of complications), I think more research/ thought should go into it than "I don't want him to look different." If there is a medical problem (rare) requiring circ later in life, at least it's his persons choice, and he will get appropriate anesthesia/ pain meds. The "they don't feel it" myth is a joke.
