Baby Names

Which names do you absolutely hate with a passion????

For boys the only one I hate very much is Jack as a legal name.  I love Jack as a nickname for John!  It cooks my goose when people use it as a full name!!

For girls I hate, hate, HATE Madison, Addison, and Nevaeh!  Madison is way too common and I remember when it kind of snuck up on everyone in 1997!!  That significantly annoyed me.  Madison is the name of an avenue in New York City, not a girl!  Addison is just choppy, ugly, masculine…not to mention it's a surname!!  It also always get me thinking: if you're planning to name your daughter that, why not replace the two d's with two l's and make it the beautiful name Allison instead?  And don't even get me started on Nevaeh!  Heaven spelled backwards?!?!  That's the stupidest thing I ever heard!!  Made-up…..and not even "good" made-up!  It just screams ignorant and low-class.

What are the names that really get your goat?

  • For some reason, boy names that begin with "Br" and "Bl" bother me more than other names.

I would never name a son Brian, Bryce, Brandon, Blaine, or Blake.  I'm not sure why these names don't work for me, but they just don't!

I won't mention whole trends, but just specific names that I don't care for.  Harper for a girl.  Brooklyn, Jackson, Kennedy (or Kenedee, shudder), Bentley, Paisley.

  • Hate is a strong word. I don't like the made up names (I went to school with someone named Che.ss.am-- named after grandfathers Chester and Samuel) and misspellings of classic names (Like adding a Y to Elizabeth or a K to Jessica).

But normal names that I can't stand are Brianna/Bri and Kaylee.

  • I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired of Jackson. My BIL and SIL were going to name my niece Jaxson. I told them if they were going to misspell it, at least drop the s. They thought I was nuts. Thank goodness it was a girl. It would irk me to no end.

There are a lot of names I can't stand but I tend to like traditional, boring names.

And Riley and Brooklyn for girls.  I can't understand what is attractive about either name.

You need more feels, Helenah.  This is the Baby Names Board!!  :-)

    LOL!

I do have a lot of feels-- but most of the names I dislike are perfectly normal names that I just don't like for whatever reason.  Brooklyin is the only one that gives me instant dry heaves.

I wouldn't necessarily say I hate any names, but my least favorite name is Ainsley. I just really don't like how it sounds.

    None, really.

I think language is fluid and I enjoy observing the ways that people adapt it, even when they come up with outlandish spellings.

There are certainly names I don't prefer and wouldn't choose for my own kids, but I can't think of any name that sends me into spasms of excessive punctuation.
^^I feel the same. As long as you aren't naming your child Poop Napkyn or Hitler, I really have no strong opinions.

I am the vast minority that loves androgynous names on men and women, so I pop in every now and then to offer that perspective.

I dislike the name Lisa, but that has only to do with my own irrational history with the name ;) . Most top 20 names are just a little too common/boring for my taste, but I certainly do not hate them.

  • I have an irrational hatred of the name Steve. I can't really explain it, I just HATE the way it sounds.

And then I intensely dislike overly-cutesy "baby" names -- basically anything ending in an -ee, or the like.

I hate the name Lydia because it always sounds like chlamydia to me. But that is my only irrational dislike of a nice, normal name. Mostly I hate the boys names for girls, made-up names, etc. And names that are perpetually cutesy for girls (mckinli, paisley, etc).
  • Gianna.  I don't know why, but it just makes my stomach turn.

Apart from the obvious made up name spellings, I have an irrational dislike for these names:

Maeve (I know a lot of people like it here, I just can't get on board)
Nathaniel (I like Nathan, Nathaniel is just too much)
Penelope (every time I see it written out I see PEN-A-LOPE.  Silly I know...)

I dislike made up of misspelled names.

I also have a strange dislike for boys and girls names that sounds alike, even though they are actually different names.  For example, Erin/Aaron, Francis/Frances.  I know they are perfectly fine, "normal" names, but I'm bugged when I hear one of these names and I can't figure out the gender variant they are referring to.

But-- Frances and Francis are said the same.

Erin and Aaron are not, even though in some parts of the country the prononciation is close.  Erin and Aaron have completley different etymological roots and have nothing to do with each other.

    @joy2611 I found my feels.

Some of the ones I really hate aren't used very often thank goodness.

Isabeau-I think this name has got to be one of the ugliest I have ever heard.  It makes me think of a person's beau/boyfriend so essentially the name to me is saying a girl "is a man".

    Greenlee- Seriously?  Ew.

    Nevaeh- For obvious reasons.

Destiny- I'm guessing it was destiny that you got pregnant with your daughter and you thought that would make a lovely name.  Yet now you've increased your daughter's chance of being a stripper 10x.

Sugar- I actually prefer Destiny.  There's a baby girl in my husband's family named Sugar and I just can't bring myself to call her anything other than "the baby".  One time I was watching the baby and said "oh she's so sweet".  Then my husband and I looked at each other and I whispered "like sugar".  It's just ridiculous.

For boys- Christian and Rocco.  I can't get past naming a child Christian is like naming a child Jewish or Muslim.  I see it as a religion only and not a name, no matter how many centuries it's been used for.  Rocco just doesn't sound nice to me, like you're trying too hard to be uber masculine.

In general, boys' names on girls drives me nuts too for the most part.  I actually went to high school with a girl Ryan so I'm kind of used to it but I hate when people name their girls Ryan but spell it Ryann.  I read that as Ry-Ann every single time.

The only thing I would say I legitimately 'hate' are the massively butchered spellings.  I may not be a big fan of some of the current name trends (-aiden names, boys names on girls, surnames, etc), but there's nothing "wrong" with them.  Purposely misspelled names really grate my nerves though, and I side-eye those parents hard.
  • 1. The surname trend.
    2. Kaylee or any alternative spelling.
    3. Made up name smooshes.
    4. The middle names Rose and Grace
    5. The perception that Y gives any name a vagina.
    6. The use of the word "unisex" to mean boy name on girl.

    Let's see.
For girls: Madison, Addison, Brinley, Brielle, Savannah, Mc- and any obviously male name in a girl.

For Boys: -den except for Aiden spelled correctly, Easton, Hunter, Jaxon or Jaxyn, Nixon, Grant, I'm sure there are more but can't think of them now.

And I can't stand River for either sex.

Ya know, if everyone went off of these name natzi standards - no "unisex" names, no surnames, nothing made up in any way, etc. There would be 5x as many Sophias, Olivias, and Lilys! So I actually think its a good thing that we aren't as cookie cutter as we once were.
  • More specific names I just thought of- Brielle, Brynlie, Camden, Annalise, Jordan, Rylie, Ryan (on a girl), Elliot (on a girl), Mac-anything.

Boys- Ryker, Bhodi, Jackson, Jayden, Jayce

nat2424, It's not that we are against unisex names. What people tend to think is unisex, is really just a boy's name on a girl.

  • G- Mabel. It's harsh and ugly. And it reminds me of cows.

B- Tristan. It sounds really effeminate to me. I also knew two in HS, and both were assholes.

Other than those two, I'll just echo the ridiculous spelling complaint.

I dislike trends more than specific names. I dislike boy names on girls most of all but scrambled spellings look atrocious as well. Brantley is the one name I can not stand. It doesn't appear to be a rational dislike. It just is.

  • For Boys: Camden, Cohen, Jaxon, Braden, Jayden, Braxton

For Girls: Addison, Emerson, Avery, Quinn, Brynlee (in any form), Nevaeh, Alexis, McKenna, Madison, Emery, Blakely, Kinsley, Brooklyn

I irrationally dislike the names Amber, Natalie,  & Jocelyn too.  I don't know why.  I'm okay with Natalia, though.

But this is all just my opinion.

I feel the same way about Jocelyn.  I don't understand why because it seems like a perfectly lovely name.  But I seriously like wrinkle my nose at it like it's the worst for no real reason.
  • I've said before Piper is a name I love to hate. It's cutesy and trendy, a double dose of ugh for me. And the sound, "pipe-her." Give me a third dose of ugh.

I'm starting to feel hateful toward Avery (on a girl). And I've never understood the appeal of Penelope (lo-pee, how is this a pretty sound?) but hate feels strong.

I'm with bromios that I find nothing attractive about the name August. I've found that I feel that way in general about the Au- sound. Add "Gus" to that, and yes, let's just leave that alone as a month name.

Charlie on a girl. That makes me stabby.

And no boy names on girls, misspellings that just make you look uneducated, and really any use of x or y, even on correctly spelled names, is starting to really irk me, due to the association with the spelling atrocities

I don't like girl Charlies (since I have a boy Charlie). Also don't like girl Rileys (since I originally wanted to name him Riley but was told that it is a girls name now). Really dislike Ainsley which also reminds one of anuses (anusi?). Dislike Bryn, Brynlee, and Brie.

I like August (nickname Gus?) but recently read on another site that it is THE popular celebrity boy name now. Darn.

  • Bentley has to be my top most hated name ever. Braden being a close second (along with most all -aden names). Jackson because it's so stinking trendy. Girls- Kaylee, Mc-whatever, Aubrey (I adore Audrey though), Addy names, and Brylee

Lol it's so funny and interesting the different opinions...I LOVE Kailey/Kaylee!  I don't like Ella and Bella.  Ella makes me think of either an elephant (Ramona's stuffed elephant toy in Beezus and Ramona was named Ella Funt) or a fat old lady, and Bella just makes me think of an old woman.  I also have an irrational dislike of any girls' names that begin with the letter "O".  Never cared for Olivia, Ophelia, any of them.  The capital letter "O" always looks fat to me!!
