Painful Stretch Marks

I have a few deep red stretch marks right where my the waist of my pants hits. The past few days it has gotten pretty painful to have my clothes rubbing against them. I put coconut oil on in the morning and at night but lately the itchiness and more importantly the pain of clothes rubbing has increased.

Any tips or ideas to ease the discomfort? I put neosporin on it tonight.

Re: Painful Stretch Marks

  • Is your skin dry? Mine is stretching and I find that moisturizing after a shower helps. I have to moisturize every day though so I don't get itchy.

I agree with @CAMag, switch to dresses or looser, softer, cotton clothing like maxi dresses or skirts?

  • I thought doing coconut oil in morning and at night would be good moisturizer but I guess I need to switch to something stronger because the itchiness has definitely increased.

    What do you guys use?

I will try to switch to more looser fitting clothes. I have even trying to get by with as little maternity clothes as possible but I will go to Target this week and try to find some inexpensive things.

I am almost wondering if putting neosporin or some moisturizer on a gauze pad and putting it over them during the day would help.

  • Is it possible to use some moleskin or a big bandaid just to stop the rubbing? No experience with this with stretch marks, (I've got a ton, they just don't itch so far) but when I had sore spots from my running shoes I put a little cotton (from a cotton ball) over the spot and covered it with a patch of moleskin (from Walgreens). Maybe that could help? Sorry they're giving you problems. Stretch marks are sucky enough. They shouldn't be allowed to hurt too :(

  • I have the same issue, and unfortunately I've found that even the underwear rubbing hurts as well :/ I haven't found any solutions so far other than wearing really loose waisted clothing and no undies (commando for the win...)
  • I bought bigger panties with the softest waist band possible. I don't have maternity ones, just cotton, Hanes bikini undies from Target.

I use Jergens, Aveeno lotion or anything Coco butter, that is for very dry skin. I've also used Cortizone gel for really itchy patches of skin. It's gooey but it works so well.

I use Palmers coco butter for stretch marks when my skin gets really dry. It's super thick and creamy (and smells like the beach :))

  • I agree with @CAMag‌ switch to dresses. I had to do this a few months back already due to the size of my belly and the rubbing. Now I'm noticing bruises around what used to be my belly button. Any one else experienced this?
  • @CAMag‌ - yes that oil is the best!
  • I would suggest maybe some vaseline. That might reduce the rubbing/chaffing action. And definitely avoid anything tightly fitting on the area that might be painful/uncomfortable to wear!
  • I like Eucerin. It's just a super moisturizing regular lotion, but I've found it relieves the itchiness, presumably because it's so moisturizing. @adreamcometrue2011‌ my belly button area also looks and feels bruised. Fun!

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am gonna combine and try them out to hopefully find a solution to give me some relief.

I did put Eucerin on last night and I think that is helping with the itching more than the coconut oil but not as much with painful rubbing so I'm gonna pick up some maxi dresses and other supplies.

Is there a bump there or anything? A friend of mine had an infected stretch mark and needed an antibiotic to clear it up.

That is interesting. Had no idea that could happen. I don't think it's to that point yet but I'm gonna keep an eye out for that as I can see how it could easily turn into that.

I had the exact same issue you're having. It ended up turning into a nasty rash called PUPPPS. I cleared it up with pine tar soap and a tea tree oil blend (both available at health food stores and on amazon.) Maybe try them if the Eucerin & loose fitting clothes don't work. Good Luck!

@adreamcometrue2011‌ -yes- my belly button looks bruised and is painful to touch. DH accidentally touched it the other day and I screamed. It's like the baby's going to come out through there :(

As far as moisturizing, I've been using Bio-Oil since day 1. The cheapest I've found is at Walmart.com or amazon.
  • I just avoid wearing clothing as much as possible. I've been sleeping in a loose shirt and no panties on a towel the last few nights even. My stretch marks are more severe on the side where baby pushes out constantly and are painful and itchy. I use Vaseline brand with Cocoa butter in it daily after my shower, hydrocortisone if it gets super itchy, and sometimes my daughters cetaphil she uses because she has eczema prone skin. Diaper cream could help with chaffing but it can be a little drying so find a balance if you use it.

PUPPPS rash is no fun. If you notice any bumps near or "coming from" the stretch marks that are super itchy tell your doctor. I ended up needing a steroid cream last time to clear mine up. I have super moisturized this time around and I believe that has helped ward it off, I did have a small outbreak on my butt but got it to go away thankfully.

I have this. I haven't been able to officially get it diagnosed by my doc but I know that's what it is. It sucks so bad :'(
  • Rub whatever moisturizer you want on it and put on a belly band. It's supportive and serves as a giant band aid. I have been wearing mine as often as I need to and it has helped my skin feel so much better. Good luck and feel better.
  • Might I make an underwear suggestion- the "yoga" line from Victorias Secret have been miraculous for me. I have a LOT of stretch mark (awesome genetics and three kiddos...) and all other underwear have been incredibly irritating to my marks. These underwear are like a cross between a low rise bikini and a boyshort (which I typically despise), and the materials is so light and soft I can't even feel them. I'm telling ya, they are worth the investment if you can swing it. I hope that helps!!
  • @aDreamComeTrue1211‌ yep! Bruised belly button over here like baby is going to rip out of it any second:( pregnancy is weird...
  • bathing in sea salt with baking soda and Aztec clay in the water followed by lasting touch lotion with some extra vitamin e (I mix in my hand) has always helped my itchiness right away and I do this almost every day. So far no stretch marks. You can always use olive oil like the italian beauties swear by! Change your clothes right away. I've also found elastic/spandex/plastics to begin to irritate, so infections could be related to the inflation.
  • I bathed with coconut oil and a fresh wash cloth for a while before switching to a natural peppermint soap (it seemed to help the itchiness of whatever needed to come out of my body/skin that the clay draws out (it will be normal to itch a little with this mixture, but the lotion alleviates it entirely). Overall, best combo I've found.

They gave me a triamicinilone steroid cream. Maybe ask doc if he/she will prescribe you some? You can only use it twice a day so I alternated it with diaper cream and lotion. I was still miserable but it did help. I had it in my but crack, inner thighs, and my entire belly. It was awful :(
  • I have the itchy, dark red stretch marks too...at the bottom of my belly where pants usually sit. I'm off today to look for maxi dresses! I've always had a problem with maxi dresses making my hip fat look weird lol but hopefully I'll have some luck today...or just be too pregnant to care. Thanks ladies!
