October 2014 Moms

Have you been asked yet?

So today I had a stranger asked me when I was due? I was wearing a maxi dress that was pretty loose around my stomach so I was caught off guard. I am 17 weeks today and while it its getting harder for me to hide my stomach now, I thought it was very bold of her to ask. I would never ask anybody if they were pregnant unless I was 100% sure they were! I wasn't offended or anything but it actually was kinda exciting for me. It made it feel even more real now that strangers can tell I am pregnant as well!

Have you guys had strangers ask you about your pregnancy yet or if you have been pregnant before, how far along were you when strangers started noticing?

Nope but this weekend when I was in a crowded place I totally pushed the bump out and cradled it so people would move the f out of my way!

That is rude and can be extremely hurtful for various reasons.  Last fall someone asked me when I was due and I was so hurt because I had just lost 10 pounds and was feeling so proud.

  • Not yet, but at 17 weeks I got this...

A friend of mine came up and rubbed my belly because he knew I was pregnant. The person I was talking to, said, "Oh good, I was wondering if you were pregnant or just...."

    Awesome, thanks guy.

  • I work with the public, and one of the teenagers I see regularly (so not exactly a stranger) finally said last week "Miss, not to be rude, but are you gonna have a baby?". I feel huge already, so I'd been waiting for someone to ask. I did tell her she shouldn't go asking people normally.

I had a similar job when I was pregnant with DS and the comments I got from the public were crazy. I had a middle-aged man corner me once to ask if I was planning a natural birth and if I would be breastfeeding.
  • @RMiller25- that dude would have TOTALLY made me feel uncomfortable!

I had a complete stranger wish me a happy mother's day on Saturday, and another lady I had never met before told me I had an adorable bump...I've been asked a number of times already.

  • I have not, but a lot of strangers stare at me. So I'm sure they're trying to figure out if I'm pregnant or just fat. Lol
I've been waiting for someone to be bold enough to ask me so that I can tell them it's just McDonald's fries so they get embarrassed. I'm kind of mean like that.

  • I had a handful o clients wish me a Happy Mothers Day yesterday. :/
  • I got asked last week.  Some stranger asked me if I was "Preggo".  I thought it was pretty bold.  I mean... I am showing.. but not THAT much and I was wearing a looser black dress.  And for me, the question "Are you pregnant?" is so much bolder than "When are you due?" as the latter implies that I already know you are pregnant.

Either way.. I told her no.

  • I have had many people tell me congratulations and ask when I am due. This started at 16 weeks. Also when I say October people look shocked.

Yes, I have strangers asking me now.  I think I'm mostly past the stage where strangers stare and wonder but don't say anything.  But I'm also showing much much more with this baby compared to the others.

  • I haven't been asked yet but my husband made the mistake of asking a total stranger once (years before he met me) and it ended up she wasn't even pregnant!!! I also think my mother had an experience with someone who was asked and she had actaully given birth 6 months prior!

  • I have students starting to wonder.  One got around it by very slyly asking if I had any children, so I told him baby was due in October.  He was like, "I thought so, but I didn't want to ask just in case..."

No one has just asked me outright, though.  I don't look like I have much of a bump unless its after dinner or you see me a lot and can tell.

  • I *just* walked in the office from running down to the gas station. The lady at the register said and I quote "Are you pregnant? I didn't want to ask but you look it". Ummm... I said yes, I'm pregnant and she proceeds to say she has 2 girls who were born by C-section because she's petite and they wouldn't let her deliver vaginally. It was so awkward, I didn't know what to say. She could have stopped at 2 girls. FTR, I do look pregnant and I'm not surprised if someone asks. I've been asked a few times when I'm due or what I'm having and it doesn't really bother me unless they just make it awkward like she did.

  • I haven't been asked yet, but for a couple of weeks I've been getting  the "Awwww, a pregnant lady" looks

  • I had a woman in the elevator of our apartment ask yesterday if I was due soon... Um no. Another 20+ weeks to go. I know I am showing, but I definitely don't look THAT pregnant.

I had a 5 year old girl at the park on the weekend ask me if I had "a baby in my belly".  I'll forgive her because of her youth, but I can see that going very badly if the answer had been no.

I feel like people comment to me all the time.  I also very obviously look pregnant at this point, so it's no surprise.

This morning, on my way out of court, a random lady was walking toward the courthouse and asked me if this was Superior Court, and I just smiled and said yes, and then she wished me good luck.  I must have looked at her funny, cause I didn't know what she was talking about, so she rubbed her belly at me to say she meant good luck with my pregnancy/baby.  Weird.

I'm a librarian in an inner-city public library... that is definitely not the weirdest thing someone has cornered me to talk about, I'm pretty used to it!

I had people asking at 14 weeks. It is very obvious now...
  • Not strangers just colleagues that know ask a lot how I'm feeling, etc.

Yep! I am 18 weeks and am measuring a little larger in the bump department than I think most others are. I've had mixed reactions. I was training a new girl yesterday and got into a "pregnancy" conversation when another coworker walked by. The new girl said, "Wait...are you pregnant?! I would have NEVER guessed if you hadn't have said anything!"

On the OTHER hand, I have had strangers hint at it (I suppose not wanting to come right out and say it just in case I wasn't) and also one person that looked straight at me and said, flat out, "Boy or girl?" I was taken aback by that one. I was also watching a road race from my front porch yesterday and one of the runners looked over and wished me a Happy Mother-to-be Day!

  • I haven't had any strangers ask me yet, but when we went out to brunch on Saturday I thought for a second that the hostess asked, because she said "Two and a half?" when asking the number of people for the table. I was with my DH and DD, and it took me a second before I realized she meant the "1/2" was my 2 year old.

  • I got asked a week or more ago by an acquaintance if I was pregnant.  With my daughter at about 16-17 weeks I got asked by a total stranger BUT she was a retired maternity nurse(or something like that).  I was happy to be asked both times.

  • I have not been asked yet by a complete stranger. BUT DH and I were in Vegas for the weekend. We had a basic room reserved and I had mentioned that I was expecting. The guy checking us in asked if I would be planning on going to bed early and I was not really sure. The guy said that our room was facing the pool and there was a pool party later that night. H said that it would not be a problem, BUT I gave him a look like that did not sound like fun for me. So check in guy went and checked with his manger and upgraded us to a suite. I also like to rub my bump in public because people do move out of the way and are more compassionate.

  • Someone came up to me at 16 weeks (16 weeks!) and asked me if I knew where ultrasound was cause "I see that you too are pregnant".

    Very bold sistah, very bold.

I have not yet been approached with this question, although I'm sure it's coming! I'm kind of surprised that people are so bold as to ask a complete stranger if they're pregnant...hmm

  • The question I get from strangers, "is this your first?". DH and I went to a beer festival (he did the drinking and I did the driving) and a girl looked at my bump and said if I was as pregnant as that girl, I wouldn't be here! I was 14 weeks!!!!!

  • I got a comment at 14 weeks from a complete stranger. I was at the airport and decided to get a pat down rather than go through the scan machine. The woman giving me the pat down started patting my stomach area and said "Congratulations! About four months along?" She might have had a good reason to suspect anyway, given where I was, but I still thought it was a bold assumption.

And this week, almost three weeks later, my coworker mentioned that I still don't look pregnant! I guess it looks different to different people...

  • Last week I got an email from one of my staff congratulating me on my pregnancy (I've told my boss, but never made an announcement to staff).  He sent it over the weekend, and when I didn't reply immediately, he started to panic and called another staff member to make sure I was indeed pregnant. Poor guy, mistakenly congratulating your boss on a pregnancy would definitely be a downer!

Here in Ukraine it's generally considered inappropriate/bad luck to discuss a pregnancy before the baby is born, so people almost never comment or ask questions.  At the same time, they are very deferential to pregnant women and parents with small children, giving up their seat on the bus, ushering you to the front of the line, etc.  It's the perfect combination in my mind.

I'm starting to get the "oh you popped" comments. I even had a lady ask me over the wknd how far along I was, when I told her 4 months, she said " wow you are big"! I was shocked she actually had the nerve to say that! I said well this is #5! Can't wait until July/Aug to hear the comments.

At church Sunday our pastor (early 30s who just had their 4th baby) asked us what was new, and my husband said I was pregnant. He replied he noticed, but wasn't going to ask. I had a tighter maternity top so people would start to notice. Then at target we were buying a baby shower gift and the associate congratulated us.

  • I haven't been asked directly yet but when we went out to dinner for Mother's Day their was an older couple sitting at the table next to us who kept whispering about me. When I stood up to use the restroom the man said "oh my that young lady has a toddler and expecting another?!" And his wife replied with "she can't be more than 20!" Clearly they weren't very good at whispering. People side eye me a lot because they assume I'm younger than I am. When I was pregnant with DS people were so rude!
  • Yes.  I was at a wedding this weekend (at not quite 16 weeks) and I had multiple people ask me.  I showed early with my first, and I feel even bigger this time around.

When I was pregnant with my first and people would ask me, I would sometimes come back with a smile and say that I just eat too many cheeseburgers.  One guy thought it was HILARIOUS.  I'll have to try that line out again this time around at some point.

  • Yes. Several times. Most recently Friday night when DH and I were at Macys. The clerk (she was an older lady) asked me when I was due and if I knew what I was having yet. I've has several teachers and other parents at my other kids school ask me or my kids. A couple have just outright said Congrats to me. It doesn't really bother me though. I'm only 16 weeks but look farther along than that!
  • I was asked for the first time by a stanger last weekend and I was so surprised! Actually I was excited I was noticeable enough for someone to notice, but I also was surprised that someone would take that risk and ask- I would NEVER! I have always been pretty thin, so my little bump is noticeable, but I have not popped yet, so it could easily just be I ate a big lunch. I felt like it was a milestone though!
