A friend of mine's father told me today what they did to help him become excited and adjust when they brought his baby sister home. He said that they gave him lots of jobs so that he could help with "his baby," and that the FIRST job was really special. It helped him so much that they did it again when they brought their third and fourth babies home.
While they were at the hospital, it was big brother/sister's job to bake baby her birthday cake, with help from Grandma (or whoever is staying with him), of course. And when baby came home, they had a very important and special older-sibling-only job: baby can't eat her slice of the cake, so big brother's job is to eat it for her!
I think that sounds so fun and sweet. We may do it! I already plan to take DS to build a bear so that he can build himself and his sibling a bear to be his present to him/her. And I'm also going to get him a "big brother" shirt and a special present for when baby comes home. I think baking a cake could be a really fun "planned" thing for DS to do while I'm away. Just wanted to share the idea!
Re: Cute idea for STMs :)
October 2011 - DS (7)
July 2014 - Stillborn DD (24 weeks)
August 2015 - DD (3)
April 2018 - 5 week loss
I love the cake idea too, though - so cute!
Whenever I tell DD that any of her books or toys are sort of babyish and I think she's too big for them, she says "I want to give it to my baby brother," or "I can read this book to my baby brother." It's awesome.
