Diaper rash with teething?

James has his first diaper rash. It's terrible. I think it might be because he poops 5 times a day. He has been drooling a ton and has had a runny nose for almost 2 weeks. He also keeps shoving his fingers into his mouth. And the whining... Oh the whining.

So I don't see any teeth remotely close to coming in... I'm kind of worried it's thrush. I see white in his mouth but it could just be milk....

Blah! Not sure what's going on. Someone help. Maybe someone's had both thrush and teething and knows the difference? (And I'm sorry you went through both horrid things, teething is enough!)

Oh, I don't have symptoms.

Re: Diaper rash with teething?

  • Yes, definitely teething causes diaper rashes and lots and lots of squooshy poop. They swallow a lot of saliva because they're drooling so much, so their stools get really soft and gross.

And apparently the poops are extra irritating because the diaper rashes are awful. Like raw sores awful. :(

    Babies are fun. :)

  • Thanks, @thegoodpotato. It's so confusing because all these sites say that all these symptoms aren't caused by teething... But I swear they have to be!
  • Hugs! If the skin is getting raw, don't use wipes. Even the sensitive ones can sting. When Luke's skin is bad we use mineral oil on cotton pads instead of wipes.

If you think frequent poop is causing it or making it worse, we also pat/wipe some regular Mylanta on his skin after we wipe him. It counteracts the acid in the poo. Mixing it into the diaper cream made the cream too runny to make a good barrier, so we do them separately - Mylanta, let it dry, then extra-strength Desitin.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.

Agree. I put Vaseline on the skin after pat (don't rub!) dry. That can help. It's not uncommon to have diaper rash accompany teething drools. Much misery for all. :((

We get diaper rash and snot with teeth.

My fave diaper rash treatment is a soak in warm water and baking soda. Our ped recommended it and it works well.

    2-3 times a day for 20 minutes.

I did this after @nkaeding gave the suggestion and it has helped so much. We also used Bueadroxs (who the hell can spell that!) Max Strength Paste. Helped a ton!

  • Oh also, I have a friend that keeps a hair dryer on her changing table. At each change she blows their bums dry on the cool setting. Gets things nice and dry at each change.

  • Dd never had diaper rash with teething until this last batch came in. It was awful. Everything you described to a t, plus a virus to boot. Hope he's feeling better soon!
