Regulating supply in the first few weeks? Too soon?

My milk came in really fast with this LO - basically on day 2. Now at day 8 I am pretty engorged and really don't feel very much relief after he nurses (which only lasts about 5 minutes and then he falls asleep). I just checked after his last nursing session and i can still spray milk from the one side he nursed on. He is making tons of wet diapers and is gaining well, so I think he's getting plenty. Sometimes he seems a bit uncomfortable and wants to nurse again within an hour, which is probably increasing my supply further. Should I start block feeding, or is it too early? I don't want to ruin my supply for the rest of the time, but I also want to make sure he's not just getting watery foremilk. Any tips on when I should worry about oversupply?

Re: Regulating supply in the first few weeks? Too soon?

  • At two weeks with ds2 still had major engorgement and was in pain. What helped me and was recommended by my LC was to pump to empty and then block feed for 4 hours to start. It took about a week and three times pump to empty in the morning and then I was good. I think engorgement is only supposed to last a day or two so by day 8, you probably have to use some more drastic techniques to get it under control.

  • By two weeks I had to do block feeding as well. I did not and was not recommended to pump. I read a lot on kellymom for how to block feed. I started at 4 and quickly loved to 6 hours because she was eating every 2-3 hours. I'm one of the 30% of women that still only feed one side per feeding and DD is 6 months old. If you need to pump I would do it just for comfort on the side you're not using.
