Witching Hour(s)

My LO's pediatrician classified her as colic since she cries for more than 4 hours a day.

My little darling has what we've lovingly started calling the witching hours....From after her 7- ish pm bottle until about midnight she gets inconsolable and finally tires herself out! We've tried everything - car rides, bouncy seat, rocker, pacifiers, swaddling, walking around the house, gripe water, the exhaust fan from the microwave, etc....

During the day she is fine. She eats, burps, passes gas and goes back to sleep on a regular schedule and her pediatrician said all is functioning fine. I guess it's just the dreaded colic and/or gas setting in during those hours...Any tips/tricks I could be missing?

Following this. My LO has the exact same time frame - 7pm or so until midnight. The only thing that quiets her is feeding, and it's mostly just comfort nursing. I feel for you, sister! So frustrating.

Our witching hour is right around dinner time. I highly recommend a wrap (we use Boba) and moving around the house. If I'm desperate I'll even vacuum. It works almost every time and he usually falls asleep!

  • I think most babies have the witching hour phase. All 3 of mine cried/cry in the evenings. Just my first I called colicky because she cried ALL day and in the evenings. I basically spend dinner time until bedtime with a baby on a boob. You can try to start an earlier bedtime routine or, as pp mentioned, the 5S's or a vacuum.

  • Lots of trial & error, but most of all patience. Try to take a nap yourself before the witching hours begin so you can tackle them rested. My son's colic stopped the day he turned 12 weeks, so know it will not last forever.
  • During the witching hour the only thing that quieted my dd was holding her and bouncing on the yoga ball, and nursing. The good news is that the witching hour/colic doesn't last forever. Everything at this point is only a phase!

  • Try colic calm. It helped us:)
  • Very true. My mom is staying with us for a few weeks to help me out and she just keeps saying the light at the end of the tunnel is there, you just have to keep going forward. I'm going to see if I can get my hands on The Happiest Baby. We really haven't swaddled our LO because she likes to kick her legs to move the gas around, but I might try to put her in the carrier to give that a try. I'm not currently BFing, but pumping and bottle feeding due to supply issues. I've got a LC coming to the house on Monday to see if maybe getting her back on the breast will help.
  • Bath time and running the faucet in the tub seems to soothe DS when he is super wound up.
