Kayaking

I plan on calling my OB about this, but just wanted to see what you all thought. I have a great oppourtunity to take a kayak tour through my job. It would be a couple hours floating downstream in a kayak (no whitewater stuff - this is on a shallow slow moving river). I will be 20 weeks. Would you go? I dont see why not, but my husband thinks it might not be a good idea. I have kayaked on lakes before, and found it really easy. This would involve navigating around some sandbars, etc, but nothing strenuous. It is something I really want to do, so I think that might be clouding my decsion.

I would think it would be fine.  My only issue is when I sit for a long time I get tailbone pain, and I imagine that might act up in a situation like that.

But if I were you, I'd still go.

  • I think it would be fine, too!  I can't wait to get out on the water this summer!  The only thing I would be worried about is getting stuck on the bottom and having to twist my body or something to help push me out, but if the water is shallow enough to have the kayak get stuck, worst case scenario would be to get out and move it away.

It should be ok, especially downstream on calm water.  I did a 9 mile bike ride on Easter and was fine but it was funny to realize how mych my bump changed my comfort level.
  • I agree with @MRSclarke08 I wouldn't be all about lifting it, but I am sure someone could help with that if necessary.  I would totally go! I plan on kayaking next weekend.  I would  bring a towel to put down on the seat to help cushion the butt, it does get a bit sore. I say have fun!
  • Hmm... I don't know if I would go if I was in a single person kayak. I think I'd just be worried about accidentally flipping over. Also, I've only ever been sea kayaking, which is a bit different. Although this topic is making me excited for summer! I suppose we'll see how I feel come warmer months! :)

I'd absolutely go.  I love kayaking!  Someone will lift it for you, especially if it's a work retreat kind of thing.

  • I would go since it will be in calm waters. But make sure that you have some down time that evening and the day after to rest and relax. I find that after I overexert (and even the small stuff now I'm considering overexertion) I'm sore in a just did a hardcore workout kind of sore.

  • I can't be positive about the safety of kayaking during pregnancy, but do make sure the lifevest is comfortable over your bump if you go!  I went on a canoe safari (basically an inflatable two-person kayak) at 12 1/2 weeks and was fine, but I guess we're further along now...good luck with your decision either way!
  • I went at 14wks, and I was fine. Only for me I had to remember to lean back a little to give my belly some room. You should be fine!
  • I love Kayaking, and the only problem I would see is the lack of bathrooms :)

  • I think you will be fine! Last week I went out about an hour and a half from shore in the ocean and snorkeled and I was fine. I'm assuming you are going with plenty of other people so they can help you along the way if need be. Kayaking sounds like fun!
