I've wanted to name a daughter Evelyn, after my grandmother, for a long time. The name just keeps getting more and more popular. Now up to #20.
Our boy name, Charles, hasn't changed much over the last 10 years.
This is me exactly. Evelyn is my grandmother's name, my mom's middle name and my middle name. I still love the name, even though it's more popular. There's already an Evelyn in DS' daycare. I may still use it just because I love and miss my grandma and would love to honor her.
Meanwhile DS' name/spelling isn't even in the top 1000 (and it's a legitimate name - Denis, just using the French spelling after my FIL). Dennis is in the 500s, I think.

We were going to use Evelyn if DS had been a girl, but now I'm pretty sure I've decided it's too popular for me. But it's a beautiful name, and since you'd be honoring your Grandma, id go for it! (My dd is Marie Stella after my Grandmom Stella.)
Ha! All three of our girl names are on there! Boy name is not and I'm keeping that one to myself, because its not very popular at all and I love it! And I'm 99.9 % sure its a boy after I posted it on www.in-gender.com
William is our #1 boy name and it has been for many years, so that's frustrating. I would like to avoid anything too popular, but we really love that name- Arg!
Katherine (and alternate spellings) is our #1 girl name and it's ranked #77 which I'm okay with.
I thought I had picked nice, classic names and it turns out everyone else likes them too. I really don't want my LO to be one of 3 in his/her class with the same name. I didn't have this problem growing up, but the Michaels, Michelles and Jessicas certainly did and I'm sure their parents thought they were giving their child a lovely name.
I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't care how popular a name is. Is that crazy? Picking out names is sooooo hard. I won't even start considering them until after finding out the sex at the anatomy scan. And even then, if my husband and I both love a name we go with it, regardless of it's place on the popularity list.
For those of you who really like popular names, DS is Mason and he has yet to have another Mason in his class or the whole daycare for that matter. I know that will eventually change, but it hasn't yet been a problem.
We only had 12 guys in my class in highschool and four of the were named David. That is why I care just a little about popularity of a name! They all went by their last names, and one of the guys' last names was Sherrell (pronounced Cheryl). Poor guy!
We have 100% agreed on a girl's name, and I searched the popularity list for the past 50 years and it has never been in the top 1000. Surprises me, as it's not a made up or off the wall name. We still have no idea on a boy name. Not even a few we both kinda like...
I have a friend who has a son, Jacob (4), and a daughter, Isabella (5 months that she calls "Bella"). Yeah, she gets ragged on a lot about how now all she needs is an Edward! She said she swears she didn't do it on purpose.

You are not alone. If everyone is picking popular names, we are going to have a couple of thousand or so kids with the same names running around.
DH is a fourth generation, William. If we have a boy, our son will bring in the fifth generation. His family would disown me for the rest of my life if I changed this tradition. I have a cute NN I am hoping will stick though.
Another thing to consider is how popular the name is in your area. Just because a name is ranked high nationally doesn't necessarily mean it is used often in your region. For example, I love Ethan and Liam, but I have yet to meet any children or know of anyone giving their sons those names in our area.

Both of the boy names I have picked out are in the top 50 which I guess is okay. The 2 girl names I have picked out are after 250 so that's awesome!
