What do you use for TV in the car?

We drive to PA from NC several times a year plus a few beach trips so for long trips, we currently have my 5 year old DS using my ipad with movies loaded onto it during those trips.  We have a headrest holder that straps on the back of the headrest.  It works great.

DD isn't really into TV yet so we haven't bothered with getting her set up but we'll be going up to PA in July and we're thinking we need to try to figure something out for her.  I would like to get another tablet type device with the same set up as DS for her to use...but another iPad is unnecessary and expensive.

Any cheaper ipad like items that would work for this?  To buy a DVD system that plays dual movies is about $250 so I feel like that $$ would be better spent on a tablet that the kids could use elsewhere.  One consideration would be to let my DD use my ipad as DS currently does and actually get DS a kindle or something to use where he could also use it in other situations.  (If we did this, we would keep "his" device with us and only give it to him in said situations, he wouldn't have free reign of this, he's only 5).

Thoughts? Ideas?

  • We got our dual dvd player for less than $100. We have long car rides frequently and use it for that purpose. Right now the girls like to watch The Wiggles and Leapfrogs Letter Factory with the occasional Disney movie thrown in the mix.

  • We use the kindle we have a few movies on there and episodes of sesame street that have helped us on long trips.
