does anyone do this? ?i want to stop buying microwave popcorn (excess packaging and bpa), but i don't want to buy another gadget. ?i'm thinking i could do it in a bit of oil in my big le creuset pot...thoughts?
We do it. Good Eats/Alton Brown had the best recipe/method for making popcorn. 3 Tbsp peanut oil (we use a mixture though of butter and roasted peanut oil 2:1) 1/2 cup popping corn and kosher salt that we put through the food processor. Put this in a stainless steel bowl (one that's older and you don't care about it getting ugly on the underside) and cover with aluminum foil poking this with holes. Turn on your heat to about medium/medium high. And begin shaking wearing potholder mitts until popping slows down (takes about 5 minutes). You will not have any burned kernels doing this method. And it is wonderful.
This is how I pop popcorn nowadays. I think it tastes much better even. Just put the kernels in the bottom of the pot and lightly coat with vegetable or canola oil. It's just like Jiffy Pop - as soon as it starts popping just shake the pan to move the kernels around so they don't stick or burn at the bottom.
I'm sure that would work just fine. You do have to keep shaking it constantly which can be a bit of a pain. I do have one of the stove top poppers with the handle you turn to stir the kernels and it works great though I know what you mean about having more gadgets. Anyway, I save so much money using my stove top popper - it's fabulous - plus I control how much or how little butter and salt is on it.
DH apparently did this last night while I was sleeping on the couch. The popcorn smell made me so sick! He just put some olive oil in the bottom of a big soup pot and dumped the popcorn in. He said that is worked great!

you could do make your own microwave popcorn. put popcorn kernals in a paper bag with a little bit of oil and microwave as you would regular microwave popcorn. It's not completely waste free since you use a paper bag, but it is better. My parents have a plastic container designed on pop popcorn without oil or any other waste. It was great when we were kids.
I usually just put a bit of olive oil in the bottom of a pan, dump in the kernels, cover it and wait for them to pop. I don't shake the pan or anything, and I haven't had any problems with burnt popcorn.
I used to make it that way all the time. I put enough canola oil in the bottom of the pan to coat the bottom, and add 2 or 3 kernels. Put the lid on and turn on the heat, and when those 2 or 3 pop, add the rest of the kernels and then just listen like you would in the microwave for the popping to slow down. You can shake the pan a little to knock unpopped kernels back down to the bottom so they'll pop. I like to top it with kosher salt and a little rosemary. Yum.
My family has always done popcorn on the stove, it was a sunday night family tradition.
We put in a couple Tbs of butter flavored shortening (you can really use any oil) and then 3-4 kernels. ?We get our kernels from a local farmer but you can get them at the store too. ?When those pop we put the rest of the kernels in (enough so they are all in the oil) and listen for it to be done. ?I usually dump the popped kernels a couple times and shake once or twice to get the kernels to the bottom. ?I'm careful when dumping to make sure I don't dump the kernels so they all cook. ?I top it with sea salt and it's delicious!

That's how we do it!
DH is much better at it than I am though!
