upper lip tie - experiences?

I posted yesterday about my son's slow weight gain (he is 4 months). At our doctor's appointment this week, our pediatrician confirmed that in addition to the tongue tie issue we had revised twice, he also has an upper lip tie. To date, nobody has made a big deal about it, including the ENT who revised his tongue tie. At the time, I didn't know much about lip ties but had seen people post about them, so in passing I asked her what she thought about upper lip ties (neglecting to ask her if my son had one). She indicated that correcting them is purely cosmetic and not done until later in development when dental issues come into play. Fast-forward a couple months, and we've had some ongoing breastfeeding latch issues, and also the more recent weight gain issue. The pediatrician also indicated that an upper lip tie is no big deal. I'd be so happy if it is really no big deal, but I suspect it may be contributing to what we've experienced. When I read nursing accounts from people who have been through upper lip tie, it really sounds like us.

For those of you who have had it done, could you describe what an upper lip tie correction is like for a 4-month-old? We are seeing a specialist to evaluate the issue tomorrow, and if he truly needs it, we will probably have it revised at that time. I'm still going back and forth on the issue, though.

Re: upper lip tie - experiences?

  • We did it at six months. It improved his latch- made it more comfortable for me since he was less chompy.

For us we went to the ENT. I held him in my lap. Dr. steadied his head, held his mouth open, and clipped. It bled a little. I nursed right away and could already flange his lip better. Much more comfortable.

I was nervous about the whole thing and it turned out to be not a big deal at all. He was mad to have fingers in his mouth, but the lip itself didn't bother him.

  • Our ENT also said it was purely cosmetic and she would need to be put under for the procedure since there is an artery there. I imagine it probably depends on the severity. He said his own daughter has an upper lip tie and they did not fix it. He was open to fixing it but said it would not cause speech or eating problems. However it probably means she'll need braces. I chose not to have her put under. Hers is pretty significant but the latch doesn't seen to be a problem.
