Multiples

Does everyone see an MFM when pregnant with multiples?

Hi, multiples board. I'm 12 weeks pregnant with twins, di/di. I've had two appointments with my OB and so far it's been very smooth sailing. I've read that when pregnant with multiples I should be seeing an MFM in addition to (or instead of?) my OB. Is this always the case? Just curious if I need to ask about this or just assume that if they think there is a need they will refer me.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have to offer!

I didn't but I know that I have always seemed to be the rare exception on this board.

Nope, I didn't either.  Di/di twins/IVF pregnancy and just saw my OB.  I was treated as high risk at my OB so I had more appointments than a regular pregnancy.

  • Through 27w, I haven't so far either. My OB is seeing me more frequently but we decided right now I didn't need to see a Mfm.

I had di/di twins from IVF and never saw one. I just had more frequent visits with my regular OB

  • I saw my MFM exclusively and delivered with the OB hospitalist. It's a different kind of model than most but it worked well for us. My MFM was on call the weekend I had the twins and even though he didn't catch the babies he was in close contact with the OB who did and he checked in on us a couple of times during our stay.

I saw an MFM at around 13 weeks because I insisted due to my previous loss, and I saw my OB a week or two after. The MFM did the NT scan and spoke with me and DH. Because my twins are di/di and I had a successful, uneventful, full-term pregnancy after my loss, he saw no reason to keep seeing me. I'm still considered high risk due to carrying twins, but the lowest of the high risk.

My OB monitors me very closely and I get u/s's every 4 weeks and now see her every 2 weeks, so I've been feeling pretty good. So far I've been great as have the babies. It seems like if you have di/di twins it may be more normal to just see an OB and not an MFM.

ETA: I'm in Canada (BC) so that may or may not make a difference.

  • I alternate between an OB and MFM every 2 weeks.

  • Starting last week with the NT scan I am now scheduled to see a MFM every 4 weeks and my OB in between. The MFM said I don't need him to deliver my OB is fine but he's the one who does a scan every 4 and "gets me through" the pregnancy part.
  • I'm having mo/di and was told I will see one if need be but not automatically. I will be having more OB appointments. They have an MFM in house so at any time I want to or they want me to I can see her.
  • I don't think I would have seen the MFM, but my OB wants them to do a growth scan since my di/di twins were 17% size difference at 26 weeks.
  • I am IVF, di/di, over 35 and I see an MFM once a month until 20 weeks, twice a month until 32 and then every week until I deliver. He does my cervical check (transvaginal scan) and looks at the placentas. I had an acute placental abruption with my DS and they are concerned about a repeat offense and accreia because the placentas are on my c/s scar. So maybe that is why? I though all multiple pregnancies saw one at least once or twice.

  • I was 35, and a IVF preganancy with di di twins.  I saw a MFM and OB.  I saw the MFM starting with the NT scan at 12 weeks- then at 14, 17, 20 and then every 2 weeks until I delivered at 34 wks.  They preformed cervical length checks at visits from 14 to 30 weeks.  They also did my anatomy scan, growth checks, umbilical cord flow checks, and NSTs. I developed high BP at 31 weeks so they prescribed and monitored the meds for this. My OB made the decision to deliver at 34w3d when I started to have headaches and visual issues from my high BP developing into pre-e.
  • I'm 25 weeks with di/di boys and I see the OB every two weeks and I've seen the MFM three times. We saw him for the NT scan at 12 weeks, an anatomy scan at 16 weeks and another anatomy scan at 22 weeks. Since everything looked great at each of those 3 appts I don't have to see him again until 30 weeks. My OB has lots of twin experience, but I do go to her twice as often as I would with a singleton. I would think many women with di/di twins don't necessarily see an MFM but they do have a high risk OB or an OB with lots of twin experience and they see the OB more frequently.

    A & K, married 7/1/13.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.

  • I'm 34 weeks with mo-di and I haven't seen MFM. I've had every two week ultrasounds and recently started weekly NSTs and everything's been fine so they didn't see the need to send me to MFM.

My OB and I consulted with MFM in the second trimester but we (OB, MFM and myself) decided to stick with OB. I saw MFM again my last week of pregnancy when some complications arose (Gestational diabetes, Cholestasis, low platelets and baby b was breech) and MFM ended up doing the delivery.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Sounds like every pregnancy is a little different. I feel much better! Thank you!

  • I saw my RE until about 7 weeks, then had monthly appts with OB until about 24 weeks. At that time we started being seen 2x/month and 1x/month for a growth scan. I only "see" the MFM dept for the NT, A/S and growth scans. I never meet with them, they just review the scans :)

I also have no NSTs or weekly appointments on the horizon, unless something starts going wonky. I've had a very easy di/di pregnancy though (just uncomfortable as hell :) )

  • I only went to a different place (not even sure if it was a MFM) for my anatomical ultrasound because they had better machines specially for twins. I only saw them a few times after that to check my cervix but the rest of the time I saw my regular OB. I never had any NSTs either. I had di-di twins so not quite as high risk.

  • I've only seen an mfm due to previous losses and my age. I see her every two weeks
  • I didn't. My OB treated me as high risk. My OB also thought my twins were di/di but they were mo/di so he thought nothing of it.

  • I felt better getting a second opinion from an MFM, since I have had a LEEP in the past. My OB wouldn't write me a script, but she saw me anyway. She said thank goodness I did - it's better to go before anything goes wrong than to wait until something goes wrong at your OB, if that makes sense - more like preventative care. I always heir on the side of caution, but I would get checked by an MFM for piece of mind.

  • I only saw my OB for my do/di b/g twins. Felt he did a great job of providing care for us!
  • I saw my RE for the first 10 weeks and then saw my OB/GYN for the remainder of my pregancy.  I was pg with di/di b/g twins.

  • I did but ONLY because their techs were more used to looking at twins and their equiptment was better
