sleeping on right side....

So I know it's not a good side to sleep on however the past few days whenever I try to sleep on my left side, my child literally beats me up. She HATES it. Its either gymnastics till I move or kick-boxing all my vital organs. The second I switch to my right side she snuggles in and is asleep (maybe from drop in BP bc of nerve down right side?)

Anyone else feel my pain?

Re: sleeping on right side....

  • I alternate between my left and right sides. I wasn't under the impression that it mattered all that much as long as you were comfortable.
  • Loading the player...
  • I can't imagine that it would be bad to sleep on your right side. It might be better to lie on your left, but if you can get a decent night's sleep lying on your right side, I would say go for it!
My doctor never mentioned anything about this, beside that I should just try to be comfortable.
  • I flip from side to side a few times during the night.  My hips hurt too much to stay in one position, so I say whatever's more comfortable!

  • I sleep however is comfortable. This usually involves flipping from my left to right side several times a night, with brief stints on my back. My doctor also has never said anything about sleep-position.
  • i flip flop back and forth, but i have the opposite issue.. my LO is not a fan of the right side and i usually feel her like pushing with both hands trying to make more room lol. I do end up on my back about an hour before i have to wake up because the hip pain is just unbearable

I have the same thing as @littlemissmarla - I typically sleep on my left but occassionally try and switch to the right side and the baby makes it so uncomfortable I just switch back. I wonder if everything is on top of him that way and he doesn't like or if I just feel him more because the placenta is on the left side maybe? Either way it is no funs, so back to the left it is.

  • I've never heard in either one of my pregnancies that sleeping on the right side was bad. I was never specially told by my doctor not to lay on my back either. I roll around a lot when sleeping because my arms fall asleep and my hips hurt when I lay on them too long.

  • I've never heard of this... the closest is that they say laying on your left side makes it easier for the vena cava to do it's thing, but that doesn't mean that it's bad to lay on your right side (unless maybe you have circulation problems already??).

I sleep more on my right side than my left and sometimes even on my back (oh no!!)... that's just what is more comfortable for me.
  • I alternate sides and only try to avoid sleeping flat on my back.
  • My doctor did tell me he knows the internet says left is better but that it doesn't really matter which side.  Only that I should avoid my back.

  • My little girl hates when I lay on my right side. She will beat me up until I move. I have a hard time finding a way to sleep. Sometimes my back is the most comfortable because of my hips but I read somewhere you aren't supposed to lay on your back?
  • I'm right there with you.  This little girl HATES when I lay on my left side and I have to sleep on my right. DS was exactly the same I slept on my right as well. As long as your are comfortable all is good :)

  • Left is "best" (for circulation and kidney function), but the right side is not bad.  Your back isn't even truly bad, it's just not nearly as good, and can worsen hemorrhoids, which is why I'm avoiding it!!

Regarding hip pain, @queeniem and @littlemissmarla, I will share this pearl of wisdom:

I had terrible hip pain for three nights straight last week and it was awful!  I did some extensive googling and found lots of people recommending that you put a pillow between your knees.  "Well I'm already doing that, so that's not helpful," I thought!  But then I saw someone comment that if you have a pillow between your knees, you must also have a pillow between your FEET, or you will have hip pain!  Knees apart and feet together, or even worse, feet crossed, is a recipe for hip pain, it seems, and as soon as I got that pillow to separate my feet the same distance my knees were separated, POOF!  No more hip pain  :)

  • There's no such thing as comfortable sleep anymore.
Yup. If it isn't the heart burn, it is ligament pain, or hip pain, or overheating, or the great get up to go to the bathroom or stay in bed debate. :)

Yup.  I woke up last night with a mouthful of puke.  Yay for acid reflux.

I can't lay comfortably on either side without getting beat up. I lay mostly on my back with a pillow propping me crooked, or almost on my stomach with a pillow wedged in there. If I lay on my sides I flip flop all night between the two

I am the same as alot of the others, I alternate between my left and right sides due to hip pain.

thanks girl! that makes total sense! i have a body pillow that i hug and stick the bottom between my knees and sometimes it will go down to like mid calf and i do notice less hip pain, i'm gonna try tonight using a different pillow to go all the way down to my feet! thanks for the heads up!!

  • I will continue to sleep however the heck I can, most of the time it means flat on my back. I won't change it until I'm uncomfortable. And my kid likes to beat the crap out of me every night as well, I don't think how I lay has anything to do with it.

  • Yeah, I alternate between sides. My OB has never once mentioned sleep positions so I'm doing whatever allows me to get as much sleep as possible.

  • I fidget all night. Doesn't matter what I do to get to sleep, I roll around once I'm gone so, personally, I'd take whatever gets you to sleep and then your body will move itself later if it's no good.

I just lay however feels comfortable as I'm trying to fall asleep and then I move a ton in my sleep. I find that little man hates when I lay on the left as well for the most part. I spend half my time on my right side and still some time on my back. Go with what works.

  • I asked my doc a while ago if I could still sleep on my back. She said shes read a lot of the theoretical issues with sleeping on your back but has never seen any actual evidence... so she told me to sleep however was comfortable. Most of the time thats still flat on my back.
  • I now have to sleep on my left side with a pillow under my butt/side due to excessive swelling in one leg/foot, but prior to that none of the nurses or doctors I've seen said anything about sleep position. I think you just sleep however you can get relatively comfortable ;-)

  • another flip flopper but im bad and go on to my back as well due to pain in hips. baby hates my sleeping on the right.
  • I'm most comfortable on my right this pregnancy. With DS I was a left side sleeper, but I just can't get comfy anymore on that side. Plus I do a lot of tossing and turning and getting up to pee to have my back hurt when I get up in the morning.

The only time it came up which side I was laying on was when I was in labor at the hospital.

My doctor said that the baby "preferred" my left side, but I don't think it really matters for the most part.

  • I flip from side to side.  And a lot of the times I wake up flat on my back.  I'm not concerned about it.  I need my sleep, so however I can do it comfortably, that's the way I go.

  • I alternate between both sides. With DD I stayed mostly on my left, but would roll over now and then. This time with twins my right side is sometimes more comfy. Do what you can.

  • I sleep on my right side most of the time and she just cuddles right up that's the side she pushes up on while I'm in class all day too. I always have to switch to my left side for atleast alittle while though because my hips start to kill me
  • Sorry I'm too lazy to go back to quote right now, but if the thing about sleeping with something between ankles as well as knees (which is how I currently sleep) is true, I'm thinking of asking DH to duct tape my legs and ankles around pillows so nothing shifts as I move in the middle of the night.  Does this seem strange or like a genius plan?!
  • @alyssa719 genius, but duct tape sounds painful.. maybe several ace bandages :D

@alyssa719‌ I like it! I woke up the other morning and my pillow was on the floor. Obviously not doing its job down there.

  • @aliletz, duct tape would take care of waxing/shaving, right??

@beff12, this is *exactly* what happens to me... and I realize it in the middle of the night then am half sleeping/searching for my pillow.  :(
