Workout/5k Check In

jbellejbelle member
edited May 2014 in March 2014 Moms
Ironically, I haven't been cleared yet to work out, hopefully tomorrow.

This week's couch to 5k workout: Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes. (3 days/week)

  • Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k?
  • What are your goals this week?
  • GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else? Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?

Re: Workout/5k Check In

  • Please add me to the 5k check in!

I was a runner up until about 20 weeks pg, and I'm actually surprised at how quickly I'm bouncing back. I started running again on April 12 and had to take a week off due to foot pain. I'm back at it and I've shaved off 3 min/mile over the course of these three weeks.

My motivation definitely comes from reducing my time. The last 5k I ran before pregnancy was 26 minutes and I'm at around 31 minutes right now. This week I want to get down to sub-31 minutes. I use mapmyfitness which works well enough.

-I haven't decided what race I am going to start with this summer. I planned to start running again this week, so far I walked around the neighborhood with DD for 30 min today.

What are your goals this week?
-Try to run at least one day. The weather is not super promising the rest of the week, so we will see. It's supposed to rain a lot.

GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else?
-It is probably going to be weight as a major motivator right now. I still have about 30lbs to be back at pre-pregnancy weight. Feeling good has always been a good one in the past, as I have used running and working out as a stress reliever.

Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?
-I have used the My Fitness Pal
App and RunKeeper app in the past. I love RunKeeper, helps me see my improvements over time and you can log more than just running.

    • Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k?

I've been working out pretty hard since being cleared 2 weeks ago. I'm doing at least 5 days and either runnin, biking, doing the elliptical, a 30 day shred video or going to hot yoga.
    • What are your goals this week? Keep with the same intensity and frequency. It's going to be tough since dh is out of town but I'm hoping both kids will nap at the same time so I can at least do an quick video.
    • GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else

Honestly at this point it's going to be the fit of my clothes and the number on the scale. I generally work out to stay healthy and have energy...and also so I can eat without counting calories or being super careful. I will return my focus to that once I get back to the weight where I want to be. I just stopped pumping and think I was probably holding on to a few lbs for that so I'm hoping those will fall off. I'm getting frustrated that I'm not seeing any movement (and sometimes I'm even gaining weight) even though I'm really working out hard!

Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?nope, just the waistband of my pants

    - No! I'm finding it very hard to find time to work out with a baby. I think it would be easier if our treadmill wasn't broken, but since it is I have to run outside or go to the gym. My husband doesn't get home until 8:00 sometimes from work to help watch LO and by that time it is close to dark. I'm a chicken and won't run by myself in the dark.

What are your goals this week?
-I plan to run three days this week, starting after work today...if I can find the time! We'll see how it goes.

GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else?
    - Last year I lost 20 pounds before getting pregnant. Seeing the weight come off was definitely the most motivating thing to keep me on track with exercising and eating healthy. Hopefully that will start happening soon and I will get more motivated!

Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?
-I used to use the My Fitness Pal app to track my calories and need to start again! I always use the Nike Running app when I run to keep track of distance traveled and speed. I also like how it shows how many miles you have run in a week, month, or the total amount since using the app, as well as fastest pace and longest distance. Seeing the miles pile up also motivated me to continue.

Hopefully I can just get off my arse when DH gets home and go for a jog.
Anyone know when I can put LO in the jogging stroller? 6mo? I have a bob. I do have the infant seat adapter on it now. But something tells me I saw somewhere not to jog with it yet. I'll be patient until I can find out more info.

Have you all found it liberating to have some exercise workout time?
  • sueq56sueq56 member
I haven't started training yet unfortunately , but I did download the couch to 5k app in my phone and the weather is supposed to be in the 70's the next few days so I have no excuse not to start training now. I have been walking the dogs 1-2 miles on a daily basis as my alone tme once husband gets home from work but I have procrastinated on the jogging portions. Hoping this check in will motivate me when I hear how everyone else is doing .

Regarding what motivates me ... At this point my motivation is kind of shallow : I really wanna get rid of my baby belly pooch haha

I'm not 100% sure but I think as long as you have the car seat adapter you can use it . I plan in using mine , just making sure I go on smooth ground , jog slow and watch to make sure baby isn't being jiggled around
  • Sorry I've been so absent!  I've been dealing with some dietary issues so I've been stretched a little thin.  Can I just say oh no! on the Bob running issue!  I've already been running with LO in it once with the car seat adaptor.  I also use the strap to clip it down, and I only run on the flat roads.  If we hit a hill or a bumpy section I walk.  But now I'm going to have to rethink this.  DH works crazy hours, often even on the weekends, so if I don't run with LO I won't get to run at all.  :-(

In any case, as a check in, I ran intervals 2 days ago.  That was my first run, and it was friggin hard!  I jogged .2 miles, walked .2 miles unless there was a hill.  Then I walked both the up and downhill.

@bearsbearsbears - Do you know of any runners that you can use earlier?
  • @bearsbearsbears - no, not what I wanted to hear, but better safe than convenient. Thanks!
  • Can you add me to the 5k training also please! My question is what kind of sports bra do you use. I'm bf/pumping and supplementing and my nipples are cracked and hurt sometimes. Do you put breast pads in also? I'm sorry if silly question . I started to walk with baby but I'm in Florida and it's sooo hot! I can't be out there too long with her. I want to walk this week and start jogging next week.

Just did T25 cardio. It should be called 25 minutes of death. I literally had to hold my boobs for most of it (even with a sports bra) from the jumping though! I must have looked ridiculous!
  • Hi guys! Let's do this!

    • Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k?  I got the all clear to workout on Monday, and did a short run that day. I ran (slllloooooowly) for .6 miles, then walked .25, then ran .6 more. It felt good! I had crummy old shoes on, though, so I didn't want to push any further. I was so slow, and totally creaky, but I was happy to be out. My new shoes arrived yesterday, and I wore them for a long walk with LO today. I'm going to run again sometime this weekend. Thankfully, DH gets home by 5:30 or 6 most days, so it's easy for me to leave Elise with him while I do a quick run.
    • What are your goals this week? For the rest of this week, I want to do at least one more good walk with the baby, and a run this weekend. I'm also hoping to go to a mom and baby yoga class tomorrow, but this week has been crazy and I might just bum around the house instead :)
    • GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else? Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?  Usually, my motivation is feeling healthy and working on speed and distance. I just like feeling in shape overall!  But now, I also have the motivation of getting rid of the belly fat. I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight, but my pants still don't fit at all. I want to take it slow and steady, though, to be sure i don't affect my breast milk supply.   I have a Garmin for tracking my runs. It doesn't always pick up a signal as easily as it should, though, which is a bit frustrating. When it works, I love it! Before that, I had the Nike Plus thing that attaches to your shoe and syncs with your iPod. It was great also!
  • New to this thread, but just started working out again this week.

Question.... Anyone having issues with nipple showage while working out.

Im BF and nipples of course are much bigger than they used to be. The friction from being on the elliptical got my nipples hard and showing which I am not used to. Anyone else having weird nipple stimulation during workouts? Embarrassed myself since I workout in my company gym.

Can I be added to the 5k check-in please? Thanks!

Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k?

Yes. I tried starting last week and discovered I needed to figure something out to hold the boobs down better. I've been using two sports bras now and it's helped a lot. So far this week I have done one of the three workouts.

What are your goals this week?

To keep up with the couch to 5k workouts.

GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else? Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?

I tend to be motivated by improving times and feeling better. If the number on the scale is moving I think that will help a lot too. I use myfitnesspal to record calorie intake once in awhile. I use mapmyrun to record any runs or walks I do. I like the reports they email to you.

    • Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k? I started the bikini mommy body 90 day challenge (silly name) on Monday.  I've been doing some long 3 ish mile walks wearing the baby on nice days also.
    • What are your goals this week?  Just to do the challenge work-out every day - so far 3 days in a row which is good for me because I really hate to exercise.
    • GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else? Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?  I took some before photos, hoping to see a difference there.  I'd like to get back into my pre-preg jeans (I just bought a pair that is one size up because I was tired of maternity and yoga pants.  I'd like to see my weight back at pre-preg and then some.

  • I realize I haven't done this yet.

Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k?
Kind of.  I've started working out, but i don't think I'd call it training yet.  I'm trying.

What are your goals this week?
I want to work out at least 4 times incorporating strength training into two of those times.  I need to regain strength.

GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else? Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend?
I'm definitely motivated by improvements in distance, and I feel really good when I see the scale change.  I also notice when I get stronger and love to build on that.

The only tool I really use is my garmin running watch.  I get kind of addicted to watching the miles add up.
  • I'm not going to post often enough to be added, but I want to share my workouts.

Have you started working out yet/training for your 5k? Yep. Not training for anything. Just want to get back in shape.
What are your goals this week? get at least 3 workouts in. I didn't work out mon or tues damnit.
GTKY: What sort of changes best motivate you to keep working out once you've started: improvements in strength, speed, weight, general feelings of good health, or something else? Do you use a tool to track your improvements that you'd recommend? Time is my motivator. I know that I'm not going to see results for many weeks and that's only if i'm consistent.
I use nike fitness app too!
