GBS+. How do I avoid Thrush?

I was GBS+ with DD and battled thrush until I gave up on BFing altogether. Given that I'm GBS+ again, I really want to avoid the same fate. I bought some probiotics to put in my hospital bag but can I do anything proactive before I go into labor??

  • I don't think thrush is a given with GBS + (I was + and needed antibiotics too, but no thrush). You can try putting coconut oil on your nipples after you nurse and it will prevent anything from growing on your breasts and in turn help with anything in the baby's mouth.

  • agree with PP that it's not a given- i was GBS+ and didn't have any issues with thrush (granted, my labor was so fast i only got 1 dose of the antibiotics). i got my first real case of it when DS was over a year. i would take probiotics and eat lots of cultured/fermented foods. and give your LO probiotic drops if you're so inclined.
  • I also had a fast labor and didn't get the full round of antibiotics. We didn't have a problem with thrush. The probiotics and coconut oil should help.

  • My LC recommends using a cotton ball soaked in a mixture of 1 tbsp vinegar and 1 cup water, on your breasts a few times a day. The vinegar kills any yeast spores. I had three rounds of antibiotics during labor and it was effective at preventing thrush for is; It also didn't caused any latching issues.

She says you can also use it on babies bottom to prevent diaper rash, and it has been very successful.
